Abstract

An inner container is fixed to an outer container for transporting and/or storing radioactive material, particularly irradiated fuel elements, by means of a connecting element which is easy to handle and has only a minimal space requirement. The inner container (1) is fixed through a flange (8) to the outer screwthread (3) of screwthreaded inserts (4) in the outer container (2), the screwthreaded inserts also being provided with internally screwthreaded bores (7) into which screws (6) for fixing a cover (5) are screwed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION container for Transporting and/or Storing Radioactive Material r This invention relates to a container for transporting and/or storing radioactive materials.
More particularly the invention relates to a connecting element for fixing an inner container in an outer container for transporting and/or storing radioactive material, particularly irradiated fuel elements from nuclear reactors.
Containers of the type used for transporting and/or storing radioactive materials, particularly spent fuel elements, are required safety to contain the radioactivity of the material accommodated in them and to show in stringent tests that their containing function is guaranteed, even in the event of serious accidents. At the same time, however, they are also required to screen off the gamma and neutron radiation released during the radioactive decay reactions and to dissipate the heat of decay to the outside.
For this reason, known containers consist of thick-walled metal outer containers, which have the necessary strength and perform the necessary radiation-shielding function, and of an inner container which provides for protection against corrosion and allows decontamination of the outer container. The inner containers are preferably designed as removable inner containers, above all for reasons of handling, testing and storage. These inner containers are either fixed to the outer container by means of clamps or are screwed to its cover.
Both solutions are complicated. The screw fixing system for example requires two rows of screwthreaded holes, one of which holds the inner container whilst the other establishes the connection between the cover and the outer container. Apart from this handling problem, another disadvantage lies in the fact that the screwthreaded holes for the cover screws have to be drilled through the inner container, with the result that the outer container is exposed to the danger of corrosion. Another disadvantage of this screw system lies in its considerable space requirement.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a connecting element for fastening an inner container to an outer container for transporting and/or storing radioactive material, articularly irradiated fuel elements from nuclear reactors, which is easy to handle, minimises the danger of corrosion to the outer container and has gonly a minimal space requirement.
The present invention provides a container for transporting and/or storing radioactive material comprising an inner container, an outer container and a cover, the inner container being fixed by means of an inner container flange to the outer screwthread of screw-threaded inserts in the outer container, the screw-threaded inserts also being provided with axial bores with an internal screwthread into which screws for fixing the cover a screwed.
One example of an embodiment of the connecting element according to the invention is described in detail in the following with reference to the accompanying drawing.
An inner container (1) rests on an outer container (2), the inner container having a flange (8) which is provided with bores through which screw-threaded inserts (4) with an external screwthread (3) are screwed to the outer container (2). The cover (5) of the inner container (1), which is provided with sealing elements 1), is held by screws (6) which are accommodated in axial bores with an internal screwthread (7) in the screw-threaded inserts (4).
Accordingly, it is possible in accordance with the invention for the inner container (1) with the flange (8) and the cover (5) to be fixed independently of one another in a compact form in which they are safe from corrosion. According to the invention, all the component parts of the connecting element, particularly the screwthreaded inserts (4), are made of corrosionresistant material.
If, because of the design data of a transport container, the cover (5) has to be fixed for example with 24 M 32 screws (6), one M 48 external thread (3) is sufficient for the screwthreaded inserts (4) to ensure the necessary transmission of force. This guarantees that, when the cover screws (6) are removed, the screwthreaded inserts (4) remain firmly in position, i.e.
are not unscrewed. The head (9) of the screwthreaded insert (4) is shaped for convenient handling. In the case of underwater loading, a seal (10) around the screw-threaded insert (4) prevents water from entering.
Claims
1. A container for transporting and/or storing radioactive material comprising an inner container, an outer container and a cover the inner container being fixed by means of an inner container flange to the outer screw thread of screwthreaded inserts in the outer container and screwthreaded inserts also being provided with axial bores with an internal screwthread into which screws for fixing the cover are screwed.
2. A container for transporting and/or storing radioactive material substantially as described with particular reference to the accompanying drawing.
