Abstract

A napkin (10) for protecting a body comprises a first sheet (12) of liquid permeable material for contacting a surface of the body, a second sheet or sheets underlying the first sheet and a spongy absorbent material (16) carrying a liquid repellent substance located between the first sheet (12) and the underlying sheet so that when the napkin is applied to the body, the substance permeates the first sheet to provides liquid repellent barrier. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A naplEDma#a##:## iFe#p#teeting a bod This invention relates to a napkin for protecting a body and has particular reference to diapers and napkins for babies and small children.
It is known to provide napkins for babies and small children which comprise a plurality of sheets of absorbent material, such as tissue paper, and an outer sheet of waterproof material of, for example, plastics.
Generally, a water repellent cream is applied to a baby's skin prior to application of a napkin. The effect of the cream is to prevent moisture from adhereing to the baby's skin, the moisture being absorbed by the tissue paper when the napkin is in use.
A disadvantage of the procedure adopted hitherto is that it is time consumming and, in certain circums tances, difficult to apply the cream and subsequently fit and secure a napkin to a baby.
According to the present invention, there is pro vided a napkin for protecting a body comprising: a afirst sheet for contacting a surface of the body, a second sheet underlying the first sheet, and a liquid repellent substance located between the first and second sheets, the first sheet being perme able to liquid so that, when the napkin is applied to the body, the substance permeates the first sheet to provide a liquid repellent barrier.
The substance may be carried on a carrier located between the first and second sheets.
The carrier may comprise absorbent material.
The material may be a sponge.
Following is a description, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying draw ing, which is a diagrammatic representation, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
In the drawing, there is shown a napkin 10 com prising a plurality of superimposed sheets 12 of tis sue paper located on a sheet 13 of plastics material.
The sheets are crimped together along opposite parallel margins 14,15. The uppermost sheet 12, i.e.
the sheet 12 remote from the plastics sheet 13, has inserted thereunder between the uppermost sheet 12 and the underlying sheet 12 in contact therewith, an elongate strip of spongy material 16 which is saturated with a substance having liquid repellent characteristics. The uppermost sheet 12 is provided with spaced portions of adhesive material 17 so that, when the napkin 10 is folded and the areas of adhe sive 17 overly adjacent surfaces of the plastics sheet 13, the napkin may be secured in the folded condi tion by means of the adhesive material 17 adhering opposite facing surfaces of the uppermost sheet 12 and the plastics sheet 13.
In use, the napkin 10 is applied to a baby, small child or incontinent person by placing the uppermost sheet 12 of the napkin in contact with the skin, fold ing the napkin and securing the napkin in the folded condition by means of the areas of adhesive material 17.
The water repellent cream contained on the spongy material 16 permeates the upper sheet 12 and contacts the skin. Any moisture excreted is diverted away from the skin and also away from the portions of the upper sheet 12 which has been permeated by the liquid repellent substance. The moisture, in consequence, is absorbed by the sheets 12 underlying the uppermost sheet and also by areas of the uppermost sheet 12 not in contact with the skin.

Claims (5)

1. A napkin for protecting a body comprising: a first sheet for contacting a surface of the body, a second sheet underlying the first sheet, and a liquid repellent substance located between the first and second sheets, the first sheet being permeable to liquid so that, when the napkin is applied to the body, the substance permeates the first sheet to provide a liquid repellent barrier.
2. A napkin as claimed in claim 1 wherein the substance is carried on a carrier located between the first and second sheets.
3. A napkin as claimed in claim 2 wherein the carrier comprises absorbent material.
4. A napkin as claimed in claim 3 wherein the material is a sponge.
5. A napkin for protecting a body substantially as hereinbefore described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
