Abstract
Head and tail stocks are adjustably secured between two lengths of spaced apart slotted angle by pins engaging aligned apertures in the stocks and the angles. The component parts of the clamp are used in conjunction with proprietary brands of slotted angle or specially formed tie-bar. More than one pair of stocks may be employed on the same slotted angle or tie-bar, and the stocks, being reversible on their axis, are capable of exerting pressure towards or away from each other. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Clamp-kit
The 'Clamp-kit' consists of a headstock, tailstock, two spacing units and four fasteners, and is used in conjunction with a proprietary brand of slotted angle to provide a simple, effective and inexpensive clamp for cabinet-makers, joiners, etc.
Although the precise form of manufacture is not an essential feature of this kit, other distinguishing features are; the headstock is not captive to a tie-bar; each stock is reversible on its axis, providing either inward or outward pressure; its length is not limited to available lengths of slotted angle since four or more pieces can be fastened together to make a clamp of any practical length; it can be fastened to a wall or other surface; two or more kits may be used on the same tie-bar.
The headstock, shown in Figures 1 & 9, is formed from a suitable gauge of steel plate, stamped, folded, spot-welded and punched with a hole (a) of a required diameter. The tubular part of the headstock (b) would be threaded internally or fitted with an internally threaded sleeve, and a screwed rod (c) of suitable length would be inserted, fitted at one end with a formed, rotatable pressure-plate (d) and a turn-key (e) firmly fixed at the other.
The tailstock (Figures 2 & 10) is a one-piece stamping, folded, spot-welded and punched. An alternative head is shown in Figure 5 where the main body of the tailstock has a single fold (f) and a separate head (g) similar in form to the fixed head, but shaped and punched to receive a rivet or other fastening to form a pivot. Tie-bars ((h) Figure 11 and (j) Figure 12) are not included in the kit. They consist of two lengths of slotted angle, of which several proprietary brands are available, notably 'Dexion'.
Or they could be specially manufactured in various lengths and with holes punched at more suitable centres.
Spacing units (Figures 6 & 7) are formed from steel strip folded and punched, and provide a gap between two lengths of slotted angle. They are fastened preferably but not necessarilly at the ends of the angles, with bolts and nuts which could have knurled heads similar to those shown in Figures.
The spacing units also serve as 'feet' or as brackets where, for instance, it might be advantageous to screw the clamp to a wall or other surface.
Figures 11, and 3 (in dotted line) show the flanges of the slotted angle placed upwards to face the workpiece, whilst Figures 12, and 4 (in dotted line) show the flanges placed downwards. Both arrangements allow the clamp to stand upright as shown in Figures 11 & 2.
The headstock and tailstock are placed into the gap provided by the spacer units between the slotted angles, and fastened with bolts and nuts similar to those in Figure 8, or split-pins of a suitable diameter, lightly sprung to provide a frictional grip to the angles.(k) Figures 11 & 12. It may be preferable to have two holes in the base of each stock to align with holes in the slotted angle, and to eliminate the tailplanes (m) in Figures 1,2,3 & 4. It will be seen in
Figure 11 that both stocks can be reversed on their axis, thus giving an opposing force.
CLAIMS (filed on 22.6.81) 1. Aclamp kit comprising a plurality of members which, used in conjunction with proprietary brands of slotted angle or the like, form a woodworking clamp.
2. A kit according to claim 1, in which stockmembers are reversibly and detachedly mountable between lengths of slotted angle. Spacing-members provide a gap for this purpose.
3. A kit according to claim 1, in which one stock-member encloses an internal thread parallel to its length and in which a threaded rod fitted with a rotatable pressure-plate at one end and a turn-key or handwheel at the other, is held captive and turned in a clockwise manner to provide a desired pressure to a workpiece being held against an opposing stockmember.
4. A kit according to claim 1, in which spacingmembers may be fastened temporarily or permanently in place between the slotted angle, or should a specially formed tie-bar so require, be eliminated.
5. A kit according to claim 1, in which holes in the bases of the stock-members align with holes in the slotted angle or specially formed tie-bar, and resiliently sprung split-pins of a suitable diameter are inserted into these holes to achieve a firm frictional grip to the connecting members.
6. A kit according to claim 1, in which the length of the assembled clamp is limited only by its practicability.
7. A kit according to claim 1, in which the assembled clamp may be fastened to a wall or other suitable surface.
8. A kit according to claim 1, in which more than one kit may operate on the same slotted angle or tie-bar.
9. A kit according to claim 1, in which the members may be cast, forged, or otherwise fabricated in metal, or produced from synthetic resinous material.
10. Awoodworking clamp kit according to claim 1 and comprising members of the kinds described and with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
