Abstract
A hinge, particularly for use between the door (13) and chute assembly (15) of a waste disposal system, comprises a channel (28) secured to the assembly (15) and defining a slot in which rests a hinge bar 30 which is secured to the door (13) and extends between holes in plates (28) which are removably secured, together with short channel lengths (27) to the assembly (15). The hinge bar is preferably greased to seal the door against the agress of dust, smells and the like. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in and relating to hinges
This invention relates to a hinge and is more particularly concerned with a hinge for the door of a waste disposal system.
Refuse disposal in buildings such as blocks of flats, hotels and institutions is often achieved by means of refuse hoppers at various locations in titAè building, each hopper being located at the mouth of an inclined chute which communicates with a shaft leading to a central refuse collection site. Each refuse hopper consists of a door hinged along its bottom edge and a chute section which when the door is open extends horizontally to receive refuse and when the door is shut is inclined downwardly to discharge the refuse into the inclined chute.
A significant problem with such refuse hoppers is the question of adequate sealing to prevent fumes, dust and the like passing from the filthy refuse chute into the room in the building in which the hopper is located there to constitute at best a nuisance and possibly a health hazard.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a hinge which also acts as a seal.
The present invention is a hinge between first and second members and comprising a bar secured to the first member, a channel secured to the second member and in which the bar is rotatably located, and means releasably secured to the second member and engageable with the bar to maintain, when secured, the ba;in the channel.
Preferably the bar is greased to assist in the sealing across the hinge.
The first member may comprise a door and chute assembly for a waste disposal system.
Preferably said means comprises at each end of the hinge a length of channel and an upstanding flange engaged by the bar.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of exampie, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation through part of a waste disposal system;
Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view of a chute assembly, incorporating the present invention, for a waste disposal system; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of a part 4fFig.2.
Referring now to Fig. 1, a waste disposal system includes a vertical refuse shaft 10 into which leads a number of inclined chutes such as the one 11 illustrated, each chute terminating at a refuse hopper 1 2 set into the wall of a room in the building containing the system. The hopper 12 includes a door 13 and chute section 14 pivotally mounted in a chute assembly 1 5.
Fig. 2 shows the details of the hopper and chute assembly more clearly. A backing plate 20 is secured around the opening of the inclined chute.
The rest of the chute assembly 1 5 is secured to the backing plate 20 and comprises In essence a container having an open mouth 21 and no bottom. Across the bottom of the open mouth of the assembly 1 5 extends a fixed plate 25 to which
is secured a channel member 26.
As shown in Fig. 2 the channel member 26
does not extend across the full width of the mouth
21 but, as seen in more detail in Fig. 3, has at each
end a short length of channel 27 secured to an
upstanding plate 28, the channel 27 and plate 28
being removably secured in position on the fixed
plate 25 by screws 29.
The hopper 12 comprising the door 13 and
chute section 14 fit into the chute assembly 1 5 and serve respectively as the front and bottom of
the container. The hopper 12 has welded or
otherwise secured thereto a hinge bar 30 which
extends between holes in the plate 28 and
cooperates with the channel member 26 to act as a hinge for the hopper 12. The hopper 12 is movable on this hinge between a first position in which the door 13 is closed and seals the open mouth 21 and in which the chute section 14 is inclined downwardly into the chute 11 (see Fig. 1), and a second position in which the chute section seals the bottom of the chute assembly 1 5 while the door is open. It is important in this general arrangement that the hinge provide a satisfactory seal against the escape of gases, dust and the like.
Considering now the hinge more closely as seen in Fig. 3, it can be seen that the channel member 26, together with the short lengths of channel 27, defines a slot extending across the mouth 21 and narrower than the diameter of the hinge bar 30, the hinge bar 30 resting on and being supported by the edges of the slot. As there is essentially line contact between the bar 30 and the edges of the slot the seal therebetween is basically good and is rendered even more satisfactory if, as is preferred, the bar is greased.
It is to be understood, of course, that the plates 28 are provided to prevent removal of the bar 30 and hopper 1 2 unless the screws 29 have been released.
1. A hinge between first and second members and comprising a bar secured to the first member, a channel secured to the second member and in which the bar is rotatably located, and means releasably secured to the second member and engageable with the bar to maintain, when secured, the bar in the channel.
2. A hinge as claimed in claim 1, in which the bar is greased to assist in the sealing across the hinge.
3. A hinge as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, in which the first member comprises a door and chute assembly for a waste disposal system.
4. A hinge as claimed in any preceding claim, in which said means comprises at each end of the
