Abstract

Synthetic lubricanting or oils based on the condensation product of a mixture of saturated aliphatic primary monohydric C12, C13, C14 and C15 alcohols and 1,2-propylene oxide are used to lubricate the needles of high-speed knitting machines. Because of its relatively high heat stability and its favourable viscosity characteristics the lubricant maintains its lubricating function on the knitting needles even at relatively high speed, whereas normal mineral-oil based lubricants decompose under such conditions.

Description

SPECIFICATION A process for the lubrication of needles of high speed knitting machines and lubricating oil composition used for the process.
The present invention relates to a process for the lubrication of needles of high speed knitting machines and to a lubricating oil composition used for the process.
The development of high speed knitting machines has created a demand for needle lubricants which can be used under relatively severe conditions under which high speed knitting machines operate. The economic situation of the international textile industry demands more sophisticated and faster running textile processing machines in order to be able to establish a good position in the textile business. Machines which operate at higher speeds are being developed. Due to the increase in speed the conditions under which the textile processing is carried out are getting severer. One of the consequences of the severer conditions is that conventional knitting machine lubricants which are mineral oil based are no longer adequate.The thermal stability of the lubricants plays an important role here because the temperature even in a well-lubricated, high speed knitting machine system can be up to 70 to 100 C. The mineral oil based lubricants are not heat stable enough at these temperatures.
Applicants have now found a lubricating oil composition which appears to be an excellent lubricant for needles of high speed knitting machines. The present lubricant composition does not have the disadvantage of the conventional lubricant i.e. the low heat stability. The lubricating oil composition, is based on a condensation product of a mixture of monohydric saturated aliphatic primary C,2, C,3, C,4, and C15 alcohols, which is commercially available under the trade name "DOBANOL"-25, ("DOBANOL" is a registered Trade Mark), and 1,2-propylene oxide. The condensation product will be further indicated as "DOBANOL 25 propoxylate". This "DOBANOL 25 propoxylate" is known from UK Patent specification 1,172,719 in the name of Applicants. This UK patent specification related to a process for improving the processability of textile fibres.The above mentioned condensation product is applied to the fibres. The present invention however does not relate to a fibre processing which comprises the application of lubricant to the fibre but it related to a process for the lubrication of high speed knitting machine needles which comprises the lubrication of the metal parts, particularly of needles and sinkers which come frequently in contact with each other during the knitting process. An important advantage of the present lubricating process is that much less threadbreakage occurs.
Consequently the number of process interruptions is minimized. Therefore the present invention provides a process for the lubrication of needles of high speed knitting machines comprising the application to the needles of a lubricating oil which is based on DOBANOL 25 propoxylate. A preferred lubricating oil composition comprises 90-98 %w of DOBANOL 25 propoxylate and 10-2 %w of additional components. Preferably the lubricating oil composition comprises as additional components one or more antioxydants, corrosion inhibitors and boundary lubricants.
A preferred lubricating oil composition comprises 97.8-94.9 %w of DOBANOL 25 propoxylate, 0.05-0.10 %w of IONOL (Shell Registered Trade Mark), an antioxidant of formula 2, 6-di-tertbutyl-4-methylphenol, 0.2-2.0 %w of SARKOSYL O or Hamposyl 0, (both trade marks for oleoylsarcosine), 0.3-1.5 %w of oleic acid, 0.05-0.3 %w of alkali hydroxide, preferably potassium hydroxide, 1.5-3.0 %w of diphenylolpropane and 0.1-0.2 %w of water. The present process is preferably carried out by spraying the lubricating oil composition on the needles by means of compressed air, but also drip-feed application is feasible.
The present invention further provides a lubricating oil composition used for the present process. In the following example two lubricating oil compositions A and B have been specified which can be suitably used in the present process.

Claims (7)

CLAI MS
1. A process for the lubrication of needles of high speed knitting machines comprising the application to the needles of a lubricating oil composition which is based on DOBANOL 25 propoxylate.
2. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the lubricating oil composition comprises 90-98 %w of DOBANOL 25 propoxylate and 10-2 %w of additional components.
3. A process as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the additional components are one or more antioxydants, corrosion inhibitors and boundary lubricants.
4. A process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the lubricating oil composition comprises 97.8-95.1 %w of DOBANOL 25 propoxylate, 0.2-1.0 %w of IONOL, 0.3-0.5 %w of SARKOSYL 0, or Hamposyl 0, 0.3-1.5 %w of oleic acid, 0.05-0.3 %w of alkali hydroxide, preferably potassium hydroxide, 1.5-3.0 %w of diphenylolpropane and 0.1-0.2 %w of water.
5. A process as claimed in any of the preceding claims wherein the lubricating oil composition is sprayed on the needles by means of compressed air.
6. A lubricating oil composition used for the process as claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
7. A lubricating oil composition as hereinbefore described with particular reference to the example.
