Abstract

A self-adhesive envelope for a ticket strip having information recorded thereon is intended to be adhered in physical relation to the article which the strip is intended to characterise. It comprises first and second sheets 12, 14 adhered together at an end edge 16 and over an adjoining major portion of side edges 17, 18, to define a free end region 19 of the first sheet which is hingedly liftable for ticket insertion. The exposed face of the second sheet 14 is coated with a permanently tacky adhesive and covered with a release-coated protective sheet 22. The envelope facilitates the handling of encoded point-of-sale tickets in department stores and the like which do not themselves have to be adhered to the article. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Envelope for ticket The present invention relates to a self-adhesive envelope.
Stock control in department stores or like situations often employs point of sale tickets - i.e., thin paper or card strips on which infomation characterising a particular article is recorded by means of visible characters, punched holes, magnetic information on a strip of magnetic material or any combination of the above. The point of sale ticket is required to be retained in physical relation to the article until the article is disposed of. In some situations, e.g., shoes, the ticket can simply be inserted into the packaging of the article but the article may be sealed into its packaging, in which case it is easy to separate the ticket from the article. It may not be practical to adhere the ticket to the article orto its packaging because when the article is disposed of, cashier or storeman may be working under time pressure and it is important that the ticket should be immediately removable.
The invention provides a self-adhesive envelope for a ticket strip having information recorded thereon and intended to be adhered in physical relation to an article which the strip intended to characterise, said envelope comprising first and second sheets adhered together at a first end edge and an adjoining major portion of the side edges so that a free end region of the first sheet is hingedly liftable from the second sheet to expose a throat of said envelope into which the ticket strip can be inserted, the exposed face of the second sheet being coated with a permanently tacky adhesive and covered by a release coated protective sheet.
Other preferred features of the invention will be apparent from the appended claims to which attention is hereby directed.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a top perspective view of an envelope for a point of sale ticket; Figure 2 is a side view of the envelope of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an underneath view of the envelope of Figure 1.
In the drawings, there is shown a self-adhesive envelope which is arranged to contain a point-ofsale ticket in the form of a strip of paper or card bearing clear form, hole punched or magnetically coded information pertaining to an article in relation to which the ticket is to be used. The envelope has a length greater than twice its width and in the embodiment shown has a length of about 10 cms and a width of about 4.5 cms, the internal width of the envelope being such that a ticket typically 2.5 cms wide and about 7 cms long can be inserted. The actual dimensions of the envelope will, of course, vary depending upon the particular point of sale ticket to be accommodated, but the proportions quoted above are belived to be typical of a wide The envelope 10 has a top sheet 12 of glassine paper, dyeline copy paper or like transluscent material and a bottom sheet 14 of paper or card coated over its exposed face with a permanently tacky adhesive material. The sheets 12 and 14 are adhered together by zones of adhesive 16 at one end of the envelope and by zones 17, 18 at adjoining major portions of the sides of the envelope. At extremities of the adhesive zones 17 and 18 the top sheet 12 is perforated to define a detachable protective flap 19 which covers a throat portion 20 of the envelope.
The adhesive coated face of the bottom sheet 14 is covered with an overlay of release coated paper 22 formed with a longitudinal cut line 24 intermediate the side edges of the envelope. The provision of this cut or split in the overlay is a very desirable feature beacause otherwise it is extremely difficult to separate the overlay 22 from the paper sheet 14.
The envelopes described above are simple to produce from web using conventional machinery, and may be provided in the form of strip in which adjoining envelopes are united at their side edges, which are cut to form perforated tear lines.
In use the protective sheet 22 is peeled away from the bottom sheet 14 and the envelope is adhered to the article, or to a cardboard box or other packaging in which the article is contained, orto a ticket or label adhered to the article. The flap 19 is lifted to open the throat of the envelope and the point of sale ticket is then slid into the envelope from one end. The point of sale ticket often comes in two parts, a major part which is intended to remain with the article until it is disposed of and a smaller part which is required earlier e.g., for identification or stock control purposes. The ticket may be inserted into the envelope so that its minor portion is accessible underneath the flap 19, so that the two may be torn off together. The provision of a tear-off tab 19 has the advantage that the ticket is exposed and can be quickly removed from the envelope when the article is disposed of.
It will be appreciated that various modifications may be made to the embodiment described above without departing from the invention, the scope of which is defined in the appended claims. For example, the score line defining the flap 19 may be replaced by a simple hinge line. The sheet 22 may be provided with a plurality of longitudinal splits or transverse splits. The top sheet 12 may be of an opaque paper instead of the transparent paper shown.
