Abstract
A tank is constructed from panels (10) joined edge-to-edge through out- turned abutting flanges (12). External cladding panels 18 are joined edge-to- edge by T-shaped connecting members (20), with co-operating T-shaped fastening members (30), the leg (28) of the fastening member fitting into the bifurcate leg (22) of the connecting member. An offset flange (34) projects from the rear of the connecting member to be fastened to the neighbouring flanges (12) of the tank panels (10).
Description
SPECIFICATION
Externally clad tank and connecting member therefor
This invention relates to tanks constructed from panels joined together through abutting out-turned flanges at the periphery of the panels.
It is frequently desirable that tanks of this type should be externally clad, especially for insulation, and to this end external cladding panels are connected in various ways, which have generally proved unsatisfactory from the aesthetic or practical point of view.
The present invention provides an externally clad tank, in which the tank is constructed from panels joined together through abutting out-turned flanges at the periphery of the panels, the cladding comprising a number of panels joined together edge-to-edge by elongate connecting members through which they are also mounted to the tank, each said connecting member comprising a T-shaped component the leg of which is interposed between the edges of adjacent cladding panels and the arms of which provide seating for the marginal portions of the inside surfaces of the adjacent cladding panels, a fastening member adapted for connection to said leg for securing the marginal portions of the adjacent cladding panels to the connecting member, a flange component extending from the T-shaped component in the direction away from the leg and being secured to the interconnected flanges of neighbouring tank panels. The leg is preferably bifurcate to provide an outwardly opening channel in which is received the fastening member. The leg of the
T-shaped component preferably lies in the same plane as the plane at which the abutting edges of the neighbouring tank panels are interconnected, the flange component being offset from that plane by at least the thickness of one of the tank flanges. The fastening member is preferably also an elongate
T-shaped component, the leg of which enters the channel in the leg of the connecting member and the arms of which bear upon the external marginal surface portions of the cladding panels. The internal surfaces of the channel of the connecting member leg are preferably ribbed to resist withdrawal of the leg of the fastening member, which may also be ribbed in such a fashion as to make insertion easier than withdrawal. The connecting member is preferably extruded from relatively rigid material such as aluminium, and the fastening member extruded from relatively resilient material such as p.v.c. The flange component may be integrally formed with the
T-shaped component of the connecting member, or it may be a separate component secured to the
T-shaped component.
In order that the invention may ne more clearly understood, two embodiments will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 shows a horizontal cross-section through a joint region of an externally clad tank, and
Figure 2 shows a similar cross-section through an alternative embodiment.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, the tank is constructed from a number of panels 10, conveniently of glass fibre reinforced polyester, each panel having a peripheral out-turned flange 12, flanges of adjacent panels being abutted through a sealing medium 14 and secured together by bolts 16.
External cladding panels 18 of insulating material have substantially the same overall dimensions in face view as the tank panels (but of different thickness and without the flanges), and are mounted in spaced relationship to the tank panels and in register with them so that the joints between adjacent cladding panels lie opposite the joints between tank panels. The adjacent edges of the cladding panels (which are slightly spaced apart) are interconnected and also mounted to the tank by means of extruded aluminium connecting members 20. Each connecting member 20 has a T-shaped component comprising a bifurcate leg 22 and a pair of arms 23, 24. The leg 22 is interposed between the adjacent edges of the cladding panels and the arms 23,24 provide a seating for the internal marginal surfaces of the cladding panels. The bifurcate leg provides an outwardly opening channel 26 into which is received the leg 28 of a T-shaped extruded p.v.c. fastening member 30. The leg 28 of the fastening member is barbed so as to co-operate with the internal ribbing in the channel 26 of the leg 22 of the connecting member, so as to resist withdrawal of the fastening member while offering less resistance to this insertion. The head 32 of the fastening member bears upon the external marginal surface portions of the cladding panels and secures them to the connecting member. The connecting member also has a flange component 34 extending from the arm 23 in the direction away from the leg 22, and lies face-to-face with one of the flanges 12 of the neighbouring tank panels, and is secured thereto by screws 36.The leg 22 of the connecting member lies on the plane at which the flanges 12 of the tank panels are connected, and hence the flange component 34 of the connecting member is offset from that plane by substantially the thickness of one of the flanges 12.
By making at least one of the fastener and the connecting member of resilient material, the fastening member can be forcibly removed if desired, without damage, so that the cladding panels can be removed and subsequently refitted. To provide additional security against accidental detachment of the cladding panels, screws may be driven at intervals through the head of the T-shaped fastening member, along the leg of the fastening member and into the channel 36. To facilitate accurate insertion of the screws, a shallow groove 38 is formed in the centre of the head 32 of the fastening member.
Referring to Figure 2, the construction is in many respects similar to that of Figure 1. However, in this case the T-shaped component of the connecting member 20 is formed separately from the flange 34, the latter being one limb of an L-shaped component the other limb 35 of which is secured by a screw 37 to the arms 23,24 of the T-shaped component. Thus the L-component can be formed differently, for example from bent sheet metal rather than as an extrusion, and moreover need not extend continuously along the full length of the T-shaped component. The limb 34 is in this case offset from the meeting plane of the flanges 12 by more than the thickness of one such flange, and a nut and washers 39,41 provide suitable packing on the bolt 16 which is used to connect the flange 34 to the panel flanges 12. In this embodiment also, the leg 22 has more widely spaced side portions, facilitating insertion of the screw 37. The T-shaped fastening member 30 thus has a broader leg 28 formed from two resilient limbs which fit tightly in the channel 26.
The embodiment of Figure 2 thus differs in a few features from the embodiment of Figure 1, but it will be apparent that other embodiments can readily be devised having other combinations of features taken from the embodiments of Figures 1 and 2.
The leg of the T-shaped connected member may be laterally spaced from a plane at which abutting edges of the tank panels are interconnected, for example if the tank panels and the cladding panels are not in register.
