Abstract

A film reel formed by a pair of interengaging side plates. Each side plate (1) having a central aperture (6) engageable on a reel spindle, two arcuate hub forming flanges (7), two arcuate rim forming flanges (8), and key means comprising a groove (10) the inner wall of which is co-planar with the outer wall of an adjacent upstanding intermediate flange (9). Along the top free edge of the flanges (8) is an upstanding lip (12) disposed and shaped to be a tight ram fit in the groove (10) of a second similiar mating plate. Each flange (8) also has end radial members (11) adapted to engage in a slot (14) between the contiguous ends of the flanges (8) and (9) of said second similar mating plate. On assembly of the two plates to form the reel, the flanges (7) and (8) of each plate mate into the spacer between the respective flanges of the other plate to form the hub and rim of the reel and the lip (12) engages the respective grooves (10). The end radial members (11) of each plate also engage the respective slots (14) of the other plate. The assembled plates forming the reel are then bonded together by any suitable means.

Description

SPECIFICATION Film Reels This invention relates to film reels especially film reels made of plastics material. Such reels have to be sufficiently rigid not to warp as this can obstruct the insertion of the film and the winding of the film onto the reel. To facilitate winding of the film on the reel it is desirable that the periphery of the reel sides, which are usually in circular plate form, are dished inwardly so that the distance between the reel sides at their peripheries is greater than that at the reel centre or hub.
Some known reels of this kind are formed in a plurality of pieces including the side plates and a central core having an outer rim into which the film end is engaged and round which the film is wound to fill the reel, and a central hub shaped for mounting onto a reel spindle of a film winding apparatus.
An object of the invention is to provide a film reel of simpler construction than known reels and is more rigid in use.
The invention provides a film reel formed by a pair of interengaging substantially circular side plates each having a central aperture engagable on a reel spindle, a number of upstanding angularly spaced arcuate hub forming flanges, a number of upstanding angularly spaced arcuate rim forming flanges radially spaced from the hub forming flanges, and key means the two side plates being assembled to form a reel with the hub-forming flanges of one plate disposed between the hub forming flanges of the other plate to form the reel hub, and the rim forming flanges of one plate engaging between those of the other plate with the key means of the two plates interengaged, the assembly being bonded together to form a substantially rigid reel.
Preferably the key means comprises rabbetted arcuate free edges on the rim forming flanges of one side plate engagable in arcuate grooves in the other plate extending between its rim forming flanges. Alternatively or complementary the key means may be formed by rabbetted portions in the hub forming flanges on one plate engageable in grooves in the other plate between its hub forming flanges.
The dimensions of the rabbetted flange edges of the two plates are preferably such that when the two plates are assembled prior to welding the rabbetted edges are a ram fit in the grooves and cause the rabbetted edges to engage firmly against the key means.
The rim forming flanges on one or both plates may be of less height than the hub forming flanges whereby when the plates are assembled their centres may be urged together so that the plates are dished.
The two plates are preferably identical but the flanges of the two plates may be differently angularly spaced providing the flanges of the two plates on assembly form a substantially continuous rim and a substantially continuous hub.
The assembled side plates are bonded together by conventional solvent welding, or sonic welding or may be by adhesives which form a firm bond between the assembled plate parts.
One construction of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one reel side plate; Fig. 2 is a section on the line Il-Il of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of Fig. 2 showing the rim flanges interengaged on assembly; Fig. 4 is a section of an assembled reel on the line lV-lV of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a section of an assembled reel on the line V-V of Fig. 1.
In the drawings the same references are used to designate the same parts. The illustrated example of the invention shows the two reels as identical but as will be explained herein variations may be made.
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 shows one side plate of a reel. This comprises the plate 1 with the conventional apertures 2 giving the effect of spokes 3 bound by a peripheral marginal ring 4. In the centre is an insert 5 of rigid material such as a metal having a shaped aperture 6 for driving engagement on the reel spindle of a film winding apparatus.
Around the insert 5 are two arcuate hub forming flanges 7 each extending angularly through 900 and separated by spaces each extending 900 into which the flanges 7 of the second plate mate on assembly of the two plates to form a substantially continuous hub to the reel.
Spaced radially from the flanges 7, are two arcuate rim forming flanges 8 which are taller than the flanges 7 for the purpose to be described. The flanges 8 extend angularly 900 and are separated by spaces extending angularly through 900 into which the flanges 8 of the other plate mate when the reel is assembled. In each of said spaces is an upstanding low flange 9 and in the plate is an arcuate groove 10 the inner wall of which is coplanar with the outer wall of the adjacent flange 9 which forms key means as will be described.
Each flange 8 has an end radial member 11 from near which the groove 10 extends. The top free edge of the flange 8 is rabbetted to form an upstanding lip 12 disposed and shaped to engage in the groove 10 of the other plate on assembly of the reel. The inner arcuate surface 13 of the lip 12 is forced against the flange 9 by the lip 12 being a tight ram fit in the groove 10 as seen in Fig. 3 thus forming the key means.
In assembling the reel the member 11 engages in a slot 14 between the contiguous ends of the flange 8, 9 of the other plate. The connection of the bases of the flanges 8 with the plates is reinforced by gussetts 15.
In assembling the two plates to form the reel the flanges 7 and 8 of one plate mate between the flanges 7 and 8 of the other plate and the rabbetted lips 12 are ram fitted into the grooves 10. Since the flanges 7 are lower than the flanges 8, the centres of the two plates can be forced towards each other thus causing the plates to be dished which facilitates winding the film onto the reel.
The assembled reel is then bonded together by any suitable means such as glue or epoxy resin adhesives, but the preferred bond is by solvent welding or by sonic welding both of which are well known in the art and need no further explanation here.
While in the example illustrated each plate has two of each of the flanges 7, 8 and 9, more may be provided and in such case the spaces between them must be so dimensioned and shaped that in the assembled reel a substantially continuous hub is formed as well as a substantially continuous rim. These flanges may extend over any suitable angle providing the flanges of the two side plates interengage in assembling the reel to form a rim sufficient to support substantially undistorted a film wound thereon. Preferably the rim and hub are substantially continuous in the assembled reel.
The plates may be of any rigid material such as metal e.g. aluminium but preferably they are of plastics material, a suitable plastics material being high impact styrene.
