Abstract

A shield for a power tool, the shield comprising a laminate including at least two layers of a resilient plastics material having an open cell structure and at least one intermediate layer of a soft dense metallic material and an outer cover of an inherently self-supporting plastics material. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Noise reducing shieids for pneumatic tools This invention relates to the reduction of noise of pneumatic tools such as pneumatic stapling guns and relates also to a method of making such shields. The present invention is based on the use of a laminate comprising at least two layers of polyurethane foam or other resilient plastics material having an open cell structure, separated by a layer of a soft dense metal such as lead. In a preferred method of forming the shield, such a laminate is disposed between the tool and a preformed multipartite cover of which the parts are forced together over the tool so as to compress the laminate and form it to the required shape.
In order to explain the invention more fully, reference will be made hereinafter to the accompanying drawing, which is a simplified view of a shield according to the invention.
The shield which is illustrated in the drawing is intended for use on a hand-held pneumatically operated stapling gun. The shield includes an outer cover 1 which is formed in at least two parts 2 and 3. In this particular embodiment of the invention the parts are separated along a plane extending lengthwise of the stapling gun. The outer cover is preferably made of an inherently self-supporting plastics material such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). The various parts of it may be pre-formed by vacuum moulding. The outer cover may be formed so as to provide between itself and the gun a gap generally ten millimetres wide so that there is space for the accommodation of an inner part of the shield.
The inner part comprises a laminate 4 of polyurethane foam of other resilient plastics material which has an open cell structure and at least one intermediate layer of a soft dense metal such a lead. In this particular example the laminate comprises two six millimetre layers 5, 6 of foam and a one millimetre intermediate layer 7 of lead sheet.
The laminate is disposed in the outer cover and then the parts of the outer cover are brought together over the gun. As those parts are forced or drawn together, the inner laminate is compressed and formed to the contours of the gun. The outer cover then may be secured to the gun by any suitable means, such as nuts and bolts passing through appropriately formed parts of the shield and the gun.
In general the laminate 4 will not be coextensive with the shield so that the blockage of exhaust and intake orifices can be avoided. The outer cover 1 may be formed with small plenums 8 and drilled with orifices 9.
1. A method of making a shield for a pneumatic stapling gun or other power tool, comprising forming in place on the tool a shield comprising a laminate of at least two layers of a plastics -material having an open cell structure and at least one intermediate layer of a soft dense metallic material.
2. A method according to claim 1 in which an outer cover is formed in at least two parts which are disposed approximately in place over the laminate and are then closed together so as to compress the laminate and form it to shape on the tool.
3. A shield for a power tool, the shield comprising a laminate including at least two layers of a resilient plastics material having an open cell structure and at least one intermediate layer of a soft dense metallic material and an outer cover of an inherently self-supporting plastics material.
4. In combination, a tool which is provided with a shield as set forth in claim 3, the outer cover having been formed in a plurality of parts which are closed together to compress the laminate.
