Phantom-circuit systems; induction, preventing and minimizing.-In a phantom circuit system, want of balance, giving rise to cross-talk, is corrected by the insertion of compensating impedances, such as chain conductors, or adjustable resistances in series with a variometer, the latter having one coil in each line of a pair, between the instruments and the ends of the wires. The elements forming the chain conductor are so chosen that the effective resistance and reactance of this conductor depend upon frequency according to a law which imitates that followed by empirical adjustable impedances, chosen so as to eliminate cross-talk at various fixed frequencies. The Specification refers to known methods in which adjustable impedances comprising resistances shunted by capacities are connected between the ends of the wires and earth, and subsequently replaced by a series of resonant circuits corresponding to outstanding values of the original impedances.
