Abstract
207,656. Jackson, J. E. Evans-, (Hesser Maschinenfabrik Akt.-Ges., F.). Sept. 30, 1922. Paper tubes.-Paper and like tubes having one end closed are formed from rhombic-shaped blanks which are cut from an intermittentlyfed roll of material by a severing device disposed obliquely to the axis of the mandrel at the desired distance therefrom. The leading corner of the blank is secured to the mandrel by grippers, and after winding one end is folded in and the tube stripped off. The web of paper P, Fig. 1, is fed forward the desired amount by the intermittently driven rollers 1, 2 and a movable knife 6, Fig. 2, pivoted on the bolt 8 and operated through a system of levers by a cam on the main driving shaft A, co-operates with an edge on the table T to form the rhombic blanks B, a holding down device, not shown, being employed to hold the paper in position. A printing device may be used to imprint matter and consecutive numbers on the blanks, as at S. The leading corner of the blank B is engaged between the mandrel 20, which is supported at one end in a bearing 35, and a finger hinged within a recess in the mandrel, and held in position to grip and release the blank by a spring operated by a lever oscillated from the driving shaft. The blank is then wound on the mandrel 20, which is driven intermittently in one direction only by the gear shown in Fig. 1. A toothed sector 142 is oscillated about its axis 42<1> by a pin 43 running in an inclined circumferential slot in a barrel 108 keyed on the main shaft A, to turn the gear wheel 41 backwards and forwards. The forward motion only is transmitted to the gear wheel 37, by means of the pawl and ratchet 38, to drive the mandrel by a wheel 36 keyed to it. After winding the blank on the mandrel, the gripper finger is operated to release the blank, and a brake-shoe carried on a spring arm rides upon a disc 30 and brings the mandrel to rest. The bottom of the tube is then formed by four folders cam-operated from the driving-shaft A, one acting from above, another from below, and the other two from opposite sides, against the projecting end of the tube. A convex-headed punch 100 also drives from the driving shaft A by a linkage, next presses in the folded end of the tube against the concave end 210<1> of an ejecting rod 50 concentric inside the mandrel 20, and forms a tighter closure. A cam driven from the main shaft A reciprocates the ejector rod 50 through a system of levers to eject the finished tube from the mandrel when the process is repeated.
