Abstract

Means and method for joining pipes, especially effecting a repair to a damaged pipe, the means comprising a sleeve for fitting on the pipe and comprising a material which shrinks on the application of heat, and a heating element for effecting the shrinkage. The sleeve includes inner and outer sleeves 11, 12 with a woven wire braid heating element 13 therebetween. The sleeves 11, 12 are of primary metal or heat shrinkable plastics material and end seals 14 of similar plastics material are also provided. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Pipe repair joint The present invention relates to joints in pipes.
It is particularly concerned with joints to be effected on pipes in situ.
According to the present invention a joint for use on pipes comprises a sleeve of material which shrinks on the application of heat, and a heating element contiguous and concentric with the sleeve for heating the sleeve and effecting the shrinkage.
According to a feature of the invention the joint may comprise an inner sleeve for bearing on the pipe outer surface, an outer sleeve surrounding the inner sleeve and a heating element sandwiched between the inner and the outer sleeve.
The inner sleeve may be made of a thermosetting resin prepreg, nickel-titanium or yellow-metal memory metal, or a shrinkable thermoplastic. It may be arranged to seal onto a pipe direct or it may incorporate or be arranged to receive compressible seals for so doing. A typical and suitable memory metal is that sold by Raychem Ltd under the Trade Mark "Bettalloy".
The outer sleeve where fitted may simply be a jacket of insulative material. Alternatively it may itself be made of a heat shrink material, preferably insulative, in order to reinforce the seal effected by the joint, particularly during curing.
The heating element preferably comprises a woven sleeve of metal wire braid which will readily shrink with the inner sleeve and, where surrounded by a shrinking outer sleeve, will reinforce the joint as a whole. Alternatively the heating element may comprise a coil of resistance wire, a thin sheet or layer, perhaps perforated, and may be made of other electrically conductive material.
At each end of the joint the heating element may have an electrical contact for enabling connection to a source of power. As it may be preferred however that the joint be prepared initially as a length of tube which can be cut to a desired length, electrical contacts, if such are employed, may be arranged to be attachable after cutting. Thus a kit of joints in accordance with the invention may comprise a plurality of joints of different diameters, perhaps incorporating seals and contacts, or a plurality of lengths of joints of different diameters, perhaps supplied with a plurality of seals and contacts for fitting to the joints post cutting to length.
The joint may carry some temperature indicating paint to indicate progress of the cure or shrinkage of the joint.
Joints in accordance with the invention are suitable for use in effecting repairs to pipes in the event of fracture or leaks, and may be temporary or permanent. They are particularly useful in situations where the application of external heat, by open flame say, is unacceptable.
Two embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a joint according to the first embodiment, and Figure 2 is a part sectional view of a joint according to the second embodiment.
The joint illustrated in the Figure 1 is as fitted to a fractured pipe 10, prior to curing. It comprises an inner sleeve 11 and an outer sleeve 12 sandwiching a heating element 13. At both ends of the joint a seal 14 fits between the inner sleeve 11 and the pipe 10 and a contact ring 15 between the element 13 and the outer sleeve 12.
The inner and outer sleeves 11 and 12 are made of an insulative thermoplastic material which shrinks when heated. The heating element 13 comprises a woven wire braid sleeve. The seal 14 is of heat resistant resilient plastics and the contact ring 15 is a metal coil having an outwardly projecting prong 1 spa. A strip of temperature indicating paint 1 6 runs the length of the joint.
The joint is supplied as a length of hose and the user will cut it to cover well the fracture shown in the pipe 10. The seals 14 are offered to the pipe first, together with the contact ring. The joint is then fed onto the pipe 10 and the seals 14 urged under the ends of the inner sleeve 11. The outer layer 12 is peeled back at both ends, the contact ring 1 5 urged over the element 13 and the outer sleeve 12 replaced.
A suitable source of electric power is connected to the prong 15b, and the element 13 heats the joint and causes it to shrink onto the pipe 10 and to compress the seal 14. When the paint strip 16 has reached the correct colour the electrical supply is removed.
The joint illustrated in Figure 2 is like that of Figure 1 , shewn fitted to a fractured pipe 20, prior to curing. It comprises an inner sleeve 21 made of yellow-metal, surrounded by two sleeves 22 and 23 which sandwich a heating element 24. The sleeves 22 and 23 are formed of electrically insulative thermo-plastic material which shrinks when heated. The heating element 24 is formed of woven wire braid sleeve. At both ends of the joint a seal 25 fits between the pipe 20 and the inner sleeve 21, and a contact ring 26 between the heating element 24 and the outer sleeve 23. The contact ring 26 is a metal coil having an outwardly projecting prong 26a. A strip 27 of temperature indicating paint runs the length of the joint.
The joint is supplied and fitted in a manner similar to the embodiment described with reference to Figure 1.

It is particularly concerned with joints to be effected on pipes in situ. According to the present invention a joint for use on pipes comprises a sleeve of material which shrinks on the application of heat, and a heating element contiguous and concentric with the sleeve for heating the sleeve and effecting the shrinkage. According to a feature of the invention the joint may comprise an inner sleeve for bearing on the pipe outer surface, an outer sleeve surrounding the inner sleeve and a heating element sandwiched between the inner and the outer sleeve. 1. A joint for use on pipes and comprising a sleeve having material which shrinks when heat is applied, and a heating element contiguous with the sleeve for heating the sleeve material and effecting the shrinkage.
2. A joint as claimed in claim 1 and wherein the sleeve comprises the said material and the heating element is concentric with the sleeve.
3. A joint as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 and comprising an inner sleeve and an outer sleeve and wherein the heating element is sandwiched between the two sleeves.
4. A joint as claimed in claim 3 and wherein the inner sleeve includes or comprises the said material.
5. A joint as claimed in claim 3 or claim 4 and wherein the outer sleeve is insulative.
6. A joint as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5 and wherein the said material is a thermosetting resin prepreg.
7. A joint as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5 and wherein the said material comprises nickeltitanium memory metal.
8. A joint as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5 and wherein the said material comprises yellowmetal memory metal.
9. A joint as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5 and wherein the said material comprises a shrinkable thermoplastic.
10. A joint as claimed in any one of the preceding claims and incorporating at least one compressible seal.
11. A joint as claimed in any one of the preceding claims and wherein the heating element comprises a woven sleeve of electrically conductive braid.
12. A joint as claimed in any one of the preceding claims and preformed as a length of tube which can be cut to a desired length
13. A joint as claimed in any one of the preceding claims and carrying a temperature indicator.
14. A method for repairing a fractured pipe and comprising fitting over the pipe a joint according to any one of the preceding claims and applying an electric current to the heating element to shrink the joint around the pipe.
