Abstract

A building or drainage component, such as for example a plastics gulley trap or an access chamber, has a part (5) which is easily divisable, e.g. along groove (9), into upper and lower sections (6, 7), each section then functioning as a socket to receive alternate ends of a length of pipe (10, Fig. 3 not shown), by means of which the two sections can be reconnected in spaced apart relationship to extend the height of the component. The extension pipe is located between a shoulder (11) and pegs (15) and may be cemented in position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in and relating to drainage components The present invention relates to drainage components, and particularly to drainage components formed in an injection moulding machine from unplasticised polyvinyl chloride or other plastic material.
In shallow underground drainage pipework systems within the curtilage of dwellings and other buildings, a gully trap is frequently required at the head of each branch drain and an inspection chamber is required at each junction.
There are many types of factory made one piece gulley traps and inspection chambers in suitable drainage materials available at present.
An inherent problem of existing one piece gully traps and inspection chambers is that, when connected into the drainage system, the position of the top of the trap or inspection chamber is fixed. It is accordingly necessary to use a so-called "riser" if it is desired to raise the height of the trap or inspection chamber. Risers are required because the distance from the invert of a drain to the finished ground level above is never constant, and varies due to: (1) The gradient of the drain and (2) The contours of the ground above the drain.
However, where risers are not used various other methods are employed to make good any gap which occurs between the top of a one-piece gully trap or inspection chamber and finished ground level. Such work is frequently unsatisfactory in performance and untidy in appearance.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel form of gulley trap and inspection chamber, the use of which will mitigate the disadvantages referred to.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a building or drainage component, incorporating a part formed in two contiguous sections, the part being divisible to separate the two sections, each section when separated from the other section being adapted to receive alternate ends of a spacing member, by means of which the two sections can be reconnected in spaced apart relationship.
In one preferred embodiment of the invention, the divisible part of the component is cylindrical in form, and is provided with a circumferential groove which defines a cutting line along which the part can readily be divided into its two sections.
The invention will hereinafter be described more particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate, by way of example only, a preferred embodiment thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the part incorporated in a gulley trap, for use in a drainage system, Figure 2 shows the part to an enlarged scale, Figure 3 is a sectional elevation of the part, separated into its two sections, and reconnected by a spacing member, and Figure 4 is a section elevation of the part incorporated into an inspection chamber, for use in a drainage system.
Referring to the drawings, and initially to Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, the part 5 is incorporated into a gulley trap 8 formed by injection moulding.
The part 5 is cylindrical and constitutes two sections 6 and 7, the boundary of which is defined by a circumferential groove 9.
The sections 6 and 7 may be separated by cutting the part 5 along the line of the groove 9.
When separated, each of the sections 6 and 7 functions as a socket for receiving alternate ends of a length of pipe 10 (Figure 3), and thereby interconnecting, but spacing apart, the sections 6 and 7.
The section 7 has a circumferential shelf 11 for locating one end of the pipe 10, and the section 6 has a pair of diametrically opposite apertures 14 for receiving two pegs 1 5 which locate the other end of the pipe 10 in the section 6. Each of the pegs has a flat surface which contacts the end of the pipe 10. The head 12 of the gulley trap may be rotated on the other end of the pipe 10. The pipe 10 may then be cemented or otherwise secured in the two sections 6 and 7.
In place of the diametrically opposite apertures 14 and pegs 15, the section 6 may be provided with an internal moulded lip (not shown), which locates one end of the pipe 10 in the section 6.
Figure 4 shows the part 5 incorporated in an inspection chamber 1 6. The sections 6 and 7 may be separated along circumferential groove 9, and reconnected in spaced apart relationship, in the manner described with reference to Figures 1 to 3 inclusive.
1. A component designed for use as a building or drainage component, the component having a part which is formed in two contiguous sections, the part being divisible to separate the two sections, each section when separated from the other section being adapted to receive alternate ends of a spacing member, by means of which the two sections can be reconnected in spaced apart relationship.
2. A component as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the divisible part of the component is cylindrical in form, and is provided with a circumferential groove which defines a cutting line along which the part can readily be divided into its two sections.
3. A component as claimed in Claim 2, wherein, when separated, each of the sections functions as a socket for receiving alternate ends of a length of pipe and thereby inter-connecting, but spacing apart, the two sections.
4. A component as claimed in Claim 3, wherein at least one of the sections has means for locating the pipe end.
5. A building or drainage component having a part substantially as hereinbefore described with
