Description
SPECIFICATION
Wheeled carriers
This invention relates to manually propelled wheeled carriers comprising a body which is provided with ground-engaging wheels and is adapted to carry a bag or other receptacle (hereinafter referred to generically as a bag) to facilitate the conveyance of articles from place to place. An example of such a carrier is a wheeled shopping trolley.
In particular, the invention is concerned with a wheeled carrier of the kind, hereinafter referred to as the kind specified, in which the body comprises a support part on which the wheels are mounted and which is adapted to carry the bag, and a handle part which is pivotally mounted on the support part for angular movement about a normally horizontal axis between a stowed position in which it extends downwardly from said axis and an erected position in which it extends above said axis and projects above the support part to provide a handle, locking means being provided for releasably locking the handle part in its erected position.
The object of the invention is to provide a wheeled carrier of the kind specified having an improved form of locking means.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wheeled carrier, primarily but not exclusively a wheeled carrier of the kind specified, having an improved form of attachment means for securing a bag to the carrier.
According to the invention, there is provided a wheeled carrier of the kind specified wherein the locking means comprises at least one locking device which is pivotally mounted on one of the parts of the body for turning about an axis transverse to the pivot axis of the handle part, between a first position in which, with the handle part in its erected position, it engages the other body part to prevent movement of the handle part out of its erected position, and a second position in which it is out of engagement with said other body part so as to permit movement of the handle part between its erected and stowed positions.
In a wheeled carrier of the kind specified the handle part may be of planar form and the support part may include a vertical part which is also of planar form and which is arranged to extend alongside one side face of a bag fitted to the carrier, the handle part being pivotally mounted on this vertical part with its pivot axis disposed in, or adjacent and parallel to the plane of the vertical part and its own plane so that the handle part is disposed in a plane coincident with, or adjacent and parallel to the plane of the vertical part when in each of its erected and stowed positions. In this event, a said locking device may be provided at one or each side of the planar parts. Preferably the pivot axis of the or each locking device is perpendicular to the pivot axis of the handle part.
Preferably, the or each locking device is a member having two portions disposed at an angle to one another, one portion being mounted in said one body part for turning relative thereto about the pivot axis of the locking device and the other portion being arranged, when the locking device is in its first position, to engage said other body part, and when the locking device is in its second position, to be clear of said other body part so that the handle part is movable between its erected and stowed positions.
The or each locking members is preferably generally of U-shape with its cross part constituting the said portion which is turnably mounted in said one body part and one limb thereof constituting the said portion for engagement with said other body part, the other limb of the member constituting an operating portion by means of which a user may move the locking member between its first and second positions, for example by grasping the operating portion between the thumb and forefinger.
In a preferred embodiment, the handle part is a frame of inverted U-shape as viewed in its erected position, and the vertical part of the support part is a frame which may also be of inverted U-shape or any other appropriate shape, the lower portions of the limbs of the handle part being pivotally connected to the upper portion of the vertical part, i.e. the upper portions of the limbs of the vertical part when the latter is a frame of inverted U-shape.
In this embodiment, a said locking device is preferably pivotally mounted in the lower portion of one of the limbs of the handle part and is arranged, when in its first position, to engage the adjacent upper portion of the vertical part. If desired, a further locking member may be similarly mounted at the other side of the carrier.
The or each locking member can be relatively small, being formed for example from a short length of metal rod, so that it does not add significantly to the weight and cost of the carrier.
According to a further feature of the invention, there is provided a wheeled carrier in which the body has attachment means for securing a bag to the carrier, said means comprising a part which is mounted on the body for movement between a first position to facilitate engagement and disengagement of a bag with and from the said part, and a second position in which it is held against movement relative to the body and it secures a bag engaged therewith to the body.
The attachment part preferably comprises a member which is pivotally mounted on the body for movement between said first and second positions.
Preferably, in the case of a wheeled carrier in which the body has a vertical part of generally planar form which is arranged to extend alongside one side face of a bag fitted to the carrier, the attachment member is pivotally mounted at one end thereof on the vertical part of the body and is arranged so that when in its first position, it projects outwardly from the vertical part and when in its second position, it lies generally parallel and close to said part.
The attachment member is preferably arranged to engage the upper part of a bag so that when the member is in its second position, the bag is suspended from it. In a preferred embodiment, the attachment member is arranged to extend through an open-ended pocket provided on the bag. Thus, with the member in its second position projecting outwardly from the vertical part of the body, the pocket of the bag may be easily slipped onto and off the free end of the member. The body of the carrier may be formed to support the bottom of the bag.
When this further feature of the invention is applied to a wheeled carrier of the kind specified, the attachment member is mounted on the support part of the body.
In this case the base part and the handle part comprise frames as described above, the attachment member preferably has one end thereof pivotally mounted in the upper portion of the vertical part of the body at one side thereof, i.e. the upper portion of one of the limbs of the vertical part when the latter is a frame of inverted
U-shape, the other end of the member being releasably engageable with a catch on the upper portion of the vertical part at the other side other thereof, i.e. the other limb thereof, to hold the member in its second position.
This further feature of the invention is not limited to a wheeled carrier of the kind specified or a carrier having a locking device of the form described above. It is also applicable to a carrier having a fixed handle and to a carrier of the kind specified in which the locking device is of the form described and illustrated in my Patent No.
1,122,061.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the upper part of one form of wheeled shopping trolley
embodying the invention, the trolley being shown with the handle part in its erected position, the
locking device in its first position locking the
handle part in this position and the attachment
means in its second position securing a bag to the
carrier;
FIGURE 2 is a smaller view showing the locking
device in its second position, the handle part in its
stowed position and the attachment means in its
first position with the bag removed; and
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of the upper
part of another form of wheeled shopping trolley
embodying the invention.
The wheeled shopping trolley illustrated in
Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings comprises a body
having a support part generally designated 10
which has a vertical part 11 of planar form
constituted by a frame of inverted U-shape, and a
handle part 12 of planar form also constituted by a frame of inverted U-shape (as viewed with the
handle part in its erected position). The handle
part 12 is pivotally mounted on the vertical part 11 for angular movement about a normally
horizontal axis lying in the plane of the handle part and disposed adjacent and parallel to the plane of the vertical part. The pivotal mounting of the handle part on the support part is provided by pivot pins 1 3 in the form of rivets passing through the lower end portions of the limbs of the handle part and brackets 14 rivetted to the upper portions of the limbs of the vertical part.
The support part 10 also has a base part (not shown) projecting forwardly from the lower end of the vertical part 11 and arranged to support a removable bag 1 5 carried.by the trolley, this base part being provided with two ground-engaging wheels which are rotatable about a common axis disposed at or adjacent to the junction of the vertical part and the base part and in or adjacent and parallel to the plane of the vertical part, and feet for engagement with the ground to enable the trolley to stand in an upright position. The base part of the support part may be, for example, of the form described and illustrated in my Patent
No. 1,450,763. The bag is of rectangular form with an open top closable by a lid 16 hinged to the rear wall.
The handle part 1 2 is movable about its pivot axis relative to the vertical part 11 of the support part 10 between an erected position as shown in
Figure 1 in which it extends above the axis and projects above the vertical part to provide a handle whereby a user positioned behind the trolley and grasping the handle can tilt the trolley rearwardly about the wheels towards himself or herself so that the feet are raised clear of the ground and can then propel the trolley along the ground, and a stowed position as shown in Figure 2 in which the handle part extends downwardly from said axis.
The trolley is provided with a locking device for releasably locking the handle part in its erected position. This device comprises a member 1 7 which may be formed from a short length of metal rod and is generally of U-shape but with its limbs offset from one another. The cross part of the member extends through an aperture in the lower portion of one of the limbs of the handle part 12 so that the member is turnable about an axis perpendicular to the pivot axis of the handle part between a first position as shown in Figure 1 in which, with the handle part in its erected position, one limb 1 8 thereof engages the front of the adjacent upper portion of the vertical part 11 and prevents movement of the handle part from its erected position, i.e. rearwardly and downwardly, and a second position as shown in Figure 2 in which the member is clear of the handle part and the latter is therefore freely movable between its erected and stowed positions. The other limb 19 of the locking member constitutes an operating portion by means of which the user can move the member between its first and second positions, for example by gripping the limb between the thumb and forefinger. As the two limbs of the member are offset, when the member is in its first, operative position, the operating limb 1 9 lies substantially parallel to the lower end portion of the limb of the handle part in which it is mounted, and therefore does not form a projection which might cause injury. The ends of the locking member are fitted with end caps of rubber or
plastics.
A similar locking device may also be provided
at the other side of the trolley.
The trolley is provided with attachment means
for securing the bag 1 5 to the vertical part 11 of
the support part 10 so that the bag is suspended
from the attachment means, the bottom of the
bag being supported, as mentioned above, by the - base part of the support part. The attachment
means comprise a member 20 which may be
formed from a length of metal rod, one end portion of the member being bent at an angle of about
350 to the main length of the member and being
received in an aperture in the upper end portion of
one of the limbs of the vertical part 11 so that the
member is pivotable between a first position as
shown in Figure 2 in which it projects forwardly
from the vertical part, and a second position as
shown in Figure 1 in which it lies substantially
parallel and close to the vertical part and is held in
this position by a catch 21 mounted on the upper
portion of the other limb of the vertical part. The
catch is rivetted to the vertical part and is formed
to provide between its upper end and the opposed
portion of the vertical part a slot 22 which
receives the free end portion of the member 20.
The arrangement is that when the member has
been pivoted to its second position, it has to be
bent slightly to engage its free end in the slot
whereby the member is held in engagement with
the catch by its inherent resilience. The free end of
the member is bent as shown in Figure 2 and
carries an end cap of rubber or plastics.
When the attachment member 20 is in its first
position (Figure 2) the bag 1 5 may be engaged
with and disengaged from it, and when it is in its
second position (Figure 1) in which it is held
against movement relative to the vertical part 11, its secures the bag to the vertical part with the
rear wall of the bag lying against the vertical part.
The member extends through an open-ended
pocket 23 formed by stitching or otherwise
attaching the longitudinal sides of a strip of
material to the upper portion of the rear wall of the bag. When the member is in its first position
(Figure 2), the pocket 23 can be easily slipped on
to and off the free end of the member to engage and disengage the bag from the attachment
means.
In a modification the locking device 1 7 is
replaced by a locking device of the form claimed in
my Patent No. 1 ,1 22,061. This device may
comprise a transverse horizontal member lying
parallel to the plane of the handle part 12 and
having joggled ends which are pivotally mounted
in holes in the respective limbs of the handle part
whereby the member is movable between a
position in which it engages the upper portion of
the vertical part 11 to lock the handle part in its
erected position, and a position in which it is out
of such engagement so that the handle part is
movable between its erected and stowed
positions.
The wheeled shopping trolley illustrated in
Figure 3 of the drawings comprises a support having a support part generally designated 30 which has a vertical part 31 of planar form constituted by a frame having two outwardly extending upper portions 32, and a handle part 33 of planar form constituted by a frame of inverted
U-shape (as viewed with the handle part in its erected position). The handle part is pivotally mounted on a transverse member 34 secured to the vertical part for angular movement about a normally horizontal axis lying in the plane of the handle part and disposed adjacent and parallel to the plane of the vertical part.
The support part 30 also has a base part (not shown) projecting forwardly from the lower end of the vertical part 31 and arranged to support a removable bag 35 carried by the trolley, this base part being provided with two ground-engaging wheels which are rotatable about a common axis disposed at or adjacent to the junction of the vertical part and the base part and in or adjacent and parallel to the plane of the vertical part, and feet for engagement with the ground to enable the trolley to stand in an upright position. The base part may be, for example, of the form described and illustrated in my Patent No. 1,450,763. The bag is of rectangular form with an open top closable by a lid 36 hinged to the rear wall. The rear wall of the bag has stitched or otherwise secured to it two triangular pieces of material 37 defining two pockets which receive the upper portions 32 of the vertical part 31 so that the bag is suspended from said portions. The bag is removable from the body of the carrier simply by lifting it to disengage the upper portions 32 from the pockets.
The handle part 33 is movable about its pivot axis relative to the vertical part 31 between an erected position as shown in which it extends above the axis and projects above the vertical part to provide a handle whereby a user positioned behind the trolley and grasping the handle can tilt the trolley rearwardly about the wheels towards himself or herself so that the feet are raised clear of the group and can then propel the trolley along the ground, and a stowed position (not shown) in which the handle part extends downwardly from said axis.
The trolley is provided with a locking device for releasably locking the handle part in its erected position. This device comprises a member 36 which may be formed from a short length of metal rod and is generally of U-shape but with its limbs offset from one another. The cross part of the member extends through an aperture in the lower portion of one of the limbs of the handle part 33 so that the member is turnable about an axis perpendicular to the pivot axis of the handle part between a first position as shown in which, with the handle part in its erected position, one limb 37 thereof engages the front of the adjacent upper portion 32 of the base part 31 and prevents movement of the handle part from its erected position, i.e. rearwardly and downwardly, and a second position (not shown) in which the member is clear of the handle part and the latter is therefore freely movable between its erected and stowed positions. The other limb 38 of the locking member constitutes an operating portion by means of which the user can move the member between its first and second positions, for example by gripping the limb between the thumb and forefinger. The ends of the locking member are fitted with end caps of rubber or plastics.
A similar locking device may also be provided at the other side of the trolley.
