Description

SPECIFICATION A carriage for a container This invention relates to a carriage for a container and, more particularly, to a carriage for a container having abutment means extending outwardly form an outer surface thereof.
It is known to provide buckets comprising metal cylindrical containers having outwardly swaged portions extending circumferentially thereof, the swaged portions being spaced one from another axially of each container and a lower swaged portion providing a lower rim of a container.
It is also known to provide carriages for such containers each carriage comprising a metal structure having a plurality of arms on which a base of a container is supported, the arms being secured to the container and the arms carrying castor devices whereby the containers may be transported. Alternatively, the castor devices may be riveted to the base of a container and the arms dispensed with.
A disadvantage of a carriage comprising arms is that the castor devices generally are located radially outwardly of the container and, after a period of use, the arms tend to buckle adjacent the lower swaged portion due to downward pressure exerted on the container. With the containers having castor devices riveted to a base thereof, there is a tendency for the devices to become dislodged or to fracture after a period of use.
According to the present invention, there is provided a carriage for a container having abutment means extending outwardly from an outer surface thereof, the carnage comprising: a band member for extending circumferentially of the container adjacent the abutment means and adapted to engage circumferentially an outer surface of said container, a plurality of transport members adapted to be carried by the band member, and a plurality of clamp members each associated with a corresponding one of the transport members and each clamp member having a pair of abutment surfaces adapted to move relative one to another.
so that the abutment means is received between and engaged by the abutment surfaces of each said clamp member whereby the carriage is secured to the container.
The band member may be adapted so as to reduce an area bounded by an inner circumference thereof.
The band member may be provided with a plurality of locations spaced circumferentially thereof, each being adapted to receive a corresponding one of said transport members.
Each transport member may comprise a carrier, a wheel connected rotatably to the carrier and means for securing the carrier to the band member at a said location.
The securing means may be adapted to reduce a gap between abutment surfaces of a clamp member associated with the carrier.
The securing means may comprise a nut and bolt combination.
Following is a description, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is perspective view of a container provided with a carriage in accordance with the present invention and Figure 2 is cross section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a cylindrical metal container 10 having a plurality of swaged, outwardly extending circumferential beads spaced axially of the container, an upper bead 11 defining an upper rim of the container and a lower bead 12 defining a lower rim of the container. The container has riveted thereto adjacent the upper bead 11 and at opposite ends of a diameter thereof a pair of upstanding lugs 13, 14 each having an aperture in which received a corresponding end portion of a handle 1 5 whereby the handle is pivotally connected to the lugs 14, 1 5. The container 10 has inserted in a lower end portion thereof a cylindrical closure member 1 6 having a circumferential outwardly extending flange 17, the arrangement being such that the flange 1 7 abuts the lower bead 12 when the closure member 1 6 is inserted in the container 10.
The container 10 is provided with a carriage 1 8 comprising a metal ring 1 9 formed from elongate strip having a plurality of loops 20 spaced longitudinally thereof so that the loops extend radially outwardly of the ring, end portions of the strip being formed so as to provide lugs 21, 22 extending radially outwardly from the ring 1 9 in spaced relation circumferentially of the ring. The lugs 21,22 each are provided with an aperture for receiving the shank of a bolt 23, the shank being adapted to receive a nut 24.
Each of the loops 21 is adapted to receive a corresponding one of a plurality of transport members 25. Each transport member comprises a substantially U-shaped frame 26 having a wheel 27 journalled therein. The frame 26 is carried on a support 28 having an aperture located centrally therein, the frame 26 being rotatable on a longitudinal axis extending through the aperture in the support 28. The transport member 25 also comprises a plate 30 and a pair of washers 31, 32, the plate 30, the washers 31,32 each having an aperture centrally located therein. The transport member 25 further includes a bolt 33, a nut 34 and washer 35.
Each transport member 25 is located adjacent a corresponding loop 20 of the ring 1 9, the shank of the bolt 33 extending through the plate 30, the loop 20, the washers 31,32, the support 28, the frame 26 and the washer 35, the shank of the bolt having screwed thereon the nut 34 so that the distance between the washers 31,32 in an axial direction of the bolt 33 is reduced. The dimensions of the washers 31, 32 are such that an outer surface of the flange 17 of the closure member 1 6 is engaged by an upper surface of each washer 32 and an upper surface of the lower bead 12 is engaged by a lower surface of the washer 31. The nuts 34 are screwed longitudinally of the corresponding bolts 33 so that the lower bead 12 and the flange 17 of the closure member 16 are clamped between the washers 31, 32.
In this manner, the ring 1 9 is firmly engaged relative to the container 10 so as to reduce any tendency of the container 10 to move in an axial direction thereof relative to the ring 19 due to any downward pressure on the container 10 during use of the container. Furthermore, assembly of the carriage 18 on the container 10 is simplified and is less expensive than provision of carriages known hitherto for a container of the type illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
It will be appreciated that the ring 1 9 is first assembled on the container 10 before the washers 31, 32 are clamped to the lower bead 12 and the flange 17 of the closure member 16, the nut 24 being screwed longitudinally of the bolt 23 so that the ring 1 9 is secured to an outer surface of the container 10.
The piates 30 and washers 31,32 are of such dimension that they extend in a radial direction of the container 10 outwardly beyond an outer surface of each corresponding loop 20 of the ring 1 9 so as to provide guide surfaces for an annular bumper 36 of flexible material.
