Abstract

A method of treating the handle of a hand-operated article of sports equipment in order to improve the "grip" which a player may have with the handle comprises the application to the surface of the handle of an adhesive which is of such a character that it allows the hands of a player to adhere to the handle but substantially does not adhere to the hands of the player when the hands are removed from the handle.

Description

SPECIFICATION Adhesive This invention relates to a method of treating the handle of a hand-operated article of sports equipment (referrred to hereinafter as an article of the type specified), and to an article of the type specified having a treated handle.
The present invention has been developed primarily, though not exclusively, with a view to improving the "grip" which a player may have with the handle of a golf club.
According to the invention there is provided a method of treating the handle of an article of the type specified, comprising applying to the surface of the handle an adhesive which is of such a character that it allows the hands of a player to adhere to the handle but substantially does not adhere to the hands of the player when the hands are removed from the handle.
It is preferred that the adhesive should be applied to the surface of the handle by spraying e.g. an aerosol spray or a pump-operated spray, though the adhesive may be applied by other means including "painting" the adhesive in liquid form.
The preferred adhesive is composed of a nontacky synthetic rubber and a tacky resin, and a solvent which is preferably non-inflammable.
When the adhesive is supplied in the form of an aerosol, it is preferred to use the adhesive which is supplied by Dunlop Rubber Company and known by the Trade Name Dunlop 1229.
When the adhesive is applied to the handle of some types of article of the type specified, such as golf clubs, it may be preferable to "thin" the adhesive by the use of solvents in a 50/50 proportion to the remainder of the adhesive (so as to render the adhesive in a consistency thin enough to spray-on or paint), the solvent comprising those supplied by the Dunlop Rubber Company under the Trade Names TN 1090 or TN 1239.
A further preferred adhesive which may be employed comprises the aerosol adhesive supplied by the 3M Corporation under the Trade Name 3M Scotch Grip 75. However, it should be understood that any other adhesives may be employed which have the property of allowing the hands of a player to adhere to the handle, for a predetermined period after application of the adhesive, say 1-12 hours, but substantially does not adhere to the hands of the player when his hands are removed from the handle.
It has been found in practice that the application of Dunlop 1229 or 3M Scotch Grip 75 to the handle of a golf club can provide a player with an improved "grip" for a period of up to 12 hours after application.
The invention is also concerned with an article of the type specified when treated by a method according to the invention and/or by any one or more of the preferred means recited above.
The invention may be applied to the handles having surfaces of leather, rubber or synthetic rubber in order to improve the "grip" for a player.
In addition to the treatment of.golf club handles, other articles of sports equipment may be treated, including inter alia squash rackets and tennis rackets.
Claims
1. A method of treating the handle of an article of the type specified, comprising applying to the surface of the handle an adhesive which is of such a character that it allows the hands of a player to adhere to the handle but substantially does not adhere to the hands of the player when the hands are removed from the handle.
2. A method according to claim 1, in which the adhesive is applied by spraying.
3. A method according to claim 2, in which the adhesive is applied by an aerosol spray or a pump-operated spray.
4. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, in which the adhesive comprises a non-tacky synthetic rubber and a tacky resin, and a solvent.
5. A method according to claim 4, in which the adhesive comprises the adhesive supplied by Dunlop Rubber Company under the Trade Name Dunlop 1229.
6. A method according to claim 4 or 5, in which the adhesive is thinned by the use of a solvent in 50/50 proportion to the remainder of the adhesive so as to render the adhesive in a consistency thin enough to spray-on or paint.
7. A method according to claim 4, in which the adhesive comprises the adhesive supplied by the 3M Corporation under the Trade Name Scotchgrip 75.
8. A method according to claim 1 and substantially as hereinbefore described.
9. A handle of a hand-operated article of sports equipment which has been treated by a method according to any one of the preceding claims.
