Abstract

The lamp includes an optical unit 1 formed by a reflector 2 and lens 3 housed in a casing 4 of plastics material surrounded by an end frame 13. The optical unit 1 is fixed in the casing 4 by abutments 8 integral with the casing 4 and behind which can locate corresponding recessed portions 9 of the edge 5 of the lens 3, and also by resilient hooks 10 pivoted in recesses 11 of the casing and adapted to anchor resiliently by pressure in corresponding recessed portions 12 formed in the edge 5 of the lens 3. The recessed portions 12 are identical with and opposed to the first-mentioned recessed portions 9 so as to render the casing 4 reversible. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Auxiliary lamp for motor vehicles The present invention concerns an auxiliary lamp primarily for motor vehicles, having an optical unit formed by a composite reflector and lens housed in a casing of plastics material surrounded by an end frame, and including means for fixing the optical unit and frame together.
In known lamps of this type, the fixing means are generally constituted by four corner pieces disposed at the internal angles of the casing and having tapped holes therethrough to enable the optical unit to be inserted between the casing and the frame and render these three constituent and principal elements of the headlamp solid with each other.
This traditional practice presents a large number of disadvantages because it multiplies the manufacturing operations such as welding of the corner pieces on the casing, drilling and tapping of the holes, and screwing. All of these operations are obviously costly and they increase the manufacturing cost of the apparatus.
An object of the present invention is to provide an auxiliary lamp which can be manufactured in a simpler and less costly manner than hitherto without the aforesaid manufacturing operations.
According to the invention, an auxiliary lamp comprises an optical unit formed by a composite reflector and lens and housed within a casing of plastics material surrounded by an end frame and including means for fixing the optical unit and the frame to the casing, the means for fixing the optical unit to the casing including abutments formed integrally with the casing behind which corresponding first recessed portions of the edge of the lens can locate, and also including resilient hooks pivoted in recesses of the casing and adapted to anchor resiliently by pressure in corresponding second recessed portions formed in the edge of the lens, the second recessed portions being identical with and opposed to the first portions so as to render the casing reversible.
In one convenient arrangement, the means for fixing the frame on the casing are constituted by projections made integrally at either side of the casing and adapted to anchor in corresponding recesses formed in resilient tongues solid with the frame and advantageously made from plastics material.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a complete auxiliary lamp according to the invention; Figure 2 is a view in cross-section along the line A-A of Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a view from above, partially exploded, of Figure 1.
The auxiliary lamp illustrated in the drawings is constituted by an optical unit 1 formed by a reflector 2 solid with a lens 3. The lens is provided with striations adapted to diffuse the light emitted by an incandescent bulb (not shown) carried by a bulb support solid with the lower part of the reflector. The supply to the lamp is effected, in known manner, via earth and a supply lead. The optical unit 1 is housed within a casing 4 of plastics material provided with a peripheral internal edge 5 recessed so as to permit the location therein of a sealing joint 6 of rubber against which bears a corresponding edge 7 of the lens 3.
The optical unit 1 is fixed within the casing by fixing means constituted by two abutments 8 and two resilient hooks 10. The abutments 8 are formed integrally with the lower part of the casing 4 and behind these abutments locate corresponding hollow portions 9 of the edge 7 in order to retain the lower part of the optical unit 2.
The hooks 10 are formed by cutting from resilient sheet steel and engage in recesses 11 of rectangular section formed in the casing. Each hook is retained and articulates in its recess 1 by one of its ends 1 Oa bent into generally hairpin form. The other end 1 Ob of each hook is bent back substantially at right angles in order to anchor resiliently by pressure in a respective one of corresponding hollow portions 12 formed on the edge 7 of the lens 3 identical with and opposed to the first-mentioned hollow portions 9.
The arrangement of the hollow portions 9 and 12 is such as to render the casing 4 reversible, so that the lamp can be fixed on or under an element of the vehicle body, for example the bumper, always leaving the optical unit 1 the right way up, that is to say with the bulb directed upwardly.
The assembly of the lamp is completed by the fitting of a peripheral end frame 13 surrounding the casing 4 and the projecting part of the optical unit 1 in order to protect them and conceal their fixing means. The end frame 13 is advantageously made from plastics material and includes an integrally moulded protective screen 14 in the form of a grill, the function of which is to protect the lens 3 from impact by stones and from damage by encountering obstacles. The grill forming the screen 14 is constituted by cross bars 1 4a defining rectangular openings 1 4b permitting passage of the light beam and producing negligible attenuation thereof.
The frame 13 and screen 14 are fixed on the casing 4 by tapered projections 15, formed integrally at either side of the casing 4 in such a manner as to anchor in recesses 1 6 of approximately corresponding shape formed on the internal faces of two resilient integral tongues forming extensions of the end frame 13, in order to permit resilient snap-engagement of the frame on the casing 4.
The lamp thus constituted may be fixed on any convenient part of the vehicle body by means of a base 1 7 through which extends a threaded rod 1 8 pivoted on the casing 4 and co-operating with a locking nut 1 9.
The invention will be seen to provide a lamp which may be simply and conveniently manufactured without the welding of components and the formation of tapped holes, and which is also readily reversible, depending on its desired position of use.
