Description

SPECIFICATION Pipe couplings This invention relates to pipe couplings, particularly for use in connecting plastics piping and of the type described and claimed in U.K.
Patent Specification No. 1 520150 in which a pipe coupling comprises at least one socket having a first socket portion for receiving a pipe-end as a close sliding fit and a second socket portion with a larger internal diameter, an end cap secured to the outside of the second socket portion and having a radially inwardly projecting portion with an internal diameter not less than the internal diameter of the first socket portion, a toggle ring housed in the second socket portion adjacent a shoulder between the first socket portion and the second socket portion, and a resilient sealing ring housed between the toggle ring and the inwardly projecting portion of the end cap.
A pipe-end which is intended to be inserted into the socket, i.e. is a close sliding fit through the radially inwardly projecting portion of the end cap, and into the first socket portion of the coupling, makes sealing contact with the sealing ring and is gripped by the toggle ring. The latter cannot damage the portion of the inserted pipe-end to be contacted by the sealing ring, so while a good mechanical connection is made between the coupling and the pipe, an effective seal is made by the sealing ring between the inside of the second socket portion and the outside of the pipe which is an advantage over previous known constructions, such as that described in Patent Specification No. 916070 in which the toggle ring is disposed between the end cap and the sealing ring and therefore is liable to damage the portion of the inserted pipe end to be contacted by the sealing ring.
However, a washer is preferably provided between the toggle ring and the sealing ring, so that the sealing ring cannot be damaged by the toggle ring, which may be of steel, especially if required to grip brass pipe. The toggle ring is preferably provided with slits extending from its aperture to enable it to open to facilitate insertion of a pipe-end.
Owing to the comparative softness or resilience of plastics pipes there is a tendency for the toggle ring to turn inside out when a pull is applied and to an inserted plastics pipe with respect to its coupling, and thus allow the pipe to be pulled free.
The object of the present invention is to provide a coupling in which this tendency is overcome.
According to the present invention, a pipe coupling of the type referred to is provided with a washer having a radial cross-section increasing in axial width from its mid-section towards at least its inner edge and at least towards the toggle ring. In other words, the increase in axial width of the washer creates a wedge-like shape between the toggle ring and the sealing ring, thus providing increased support for the toggle ring against its face towards the sealing ring and towards which it is pulled when a pull is applied to an inserted pipe with respect to the coupling.
The face of the washer remote from the toggle ring may be planar; or it may be a mirror image of the face of the washer adjacent the toggle ring, i.e. the radial crosssection of the washer may have a dovetail portion between its mid-section and its inner edge; or again, the radial cross-section of the washer may also increase in axial width from its mid-section towards its outer edge and towards the sealing ring.
These three embodiments will now be described, by way of examples only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which all three Figures are longitudinal cross-sections of pipe couplings in accordance with the invention.
In each of the embodiments, a plastics pipe coupling 1 has a socket having a first socket portion 2 extending from a rib 3, which serves as a pipe (not shown) and also separates the socket portion 2 from a similar socket portion 4 of a sleeve (the rest of which is not shown). The first socket portion 2 opens into a second socket portion having a larger internal diameter and provided with a plastics end cap 6 having a skirt internally screw-threaded to fit mating screw-threads on the outside 8 of the second socket portion and a radially inwardly projecting portion 9 with an internal diameter equal to the internal diameter of the first socket portion 2.A steel toggle ring 10 is housed in the second socket portion 5 adjacent a shoulder 11 between the first socket portion and the second socket portion, which also houses a resilient rubber O-ring 12 and a plastics washer 1 3A or 1 3B or 1 3C to prevent the sealing ring being damaged by the toggle ring, the sealing ring being located against a slight step in the second socket portion.
The inwardly projecting portion 9 of the end cap extends inside the second socket portion 5, but the space between the portion 9 and the washer 1 3A or 1 3B or 1 3C is greater than the thickness of the sealing ring 12 when the latter is undistorted.
When a plastics pipe end (not shown) which is a close sliding fit through the inner portion 9 of the end cap is pushed through into the first socket portion 2, it makes sealing contact with the sealing ring 12 and is gripped by the toggle ring 10.
Owing to the comparative softness or resilience of plastics pipes there is a tendency for the toggle ring 10 to turn inside out when a pull is applied to an inserted plastics pipe with respect to its coupling, which tendency would allow the pipe to be pulled free but for the feature of the present invention, which is that each of the washers 1 3A, 1 3B, 1 3C, has its radial cross-section increasing in axial width from its mid-section towards at least its inner edge and at least towards the toggle ring 10.
In other words, the increase in axial width of each washer creates a wedge-like shape between the toggle ring and the sealing ring 12.
thus providing increased support (as compared with a plain washer) for the toggle ring against its face towards the sealing ring and towards which it is pulled when a pull is applied to an inserted pipe with respect to the coupling.
The face of the washer 1 3A (Fig. 11 remote from the toggle ring 10 is planar; the corresponding face of the washer 1 3B (Fig. 2) is a mirror image of the face of the washer adjacent the toggle ring, i.e., the radial crosssection of the washer 1 3B has a dovetail portion between its mid-section and its inner edge; while in Fig. 3 the radial cross-section of the washer 1 3C also increases in axial width from its mid-section towards its outer edge and towards the sealing ring 12.
