Abstract

A sealed display envelope, pouch or pocket for an article inserted therein is made using an envelope blank comprising first and second plastics sheets 3, 1 attached together at one edge 5 so that a self-adhesive side of the first sheet 3 can be brought into overlying registration with and facing the second sheet 10. At least one of the sheets 1, 3 is transparent. A removable protective liner 4 covers all of or a major part of the self-adhesive side of the first sheet 3. In use the article to be displayed is inserted between the first and second sheets, the protective liner 4 is removed from the adhesive side of the first sheet 3 and the first sheet is brought into contact with the article so that it adheres thereto, after which regions of the first sheet projecting beyond the periphery of said article are pressed into contact with the second sheet so as to seal the envelope. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Method of making sealed and/or secure display envelopes/pouches and envelope/pouch blanks for use in the method The present invention relates to an envelope or pouch for the sealed and/or secure display of an article such as a rare coin or stamp, a railway ticket, omnibus ticket or pass, membership card, photograph, staff pass, customer or employee identity card, credit card or the like information bearing sheet material in which the sheet material (or other insert) is permanently enclosed in a tamper-resistant and dirt or moisture resistant environment.
Security cards are available in which a plastics or paper internal sheet is sealed in a transparent plastics pocket or envelope. Such cards are inconvenient, however, because the issuing person or authority must either send the internal sheet to the manufacturer for sealing in the pocket or go to the expense of buying his own sealing or lamination equipment so that he can seal the pocket on the spot.
Our U.K. Patent Specification No. 1 569850 discloses a security card blank which can be sealed without any special equipment and which comprises a sheet of material having on one side thereof a space for entering security information, a transparent plastics sheet-form overlay having a self-adhesive side and having an edge region attached to the said one side over an edge region of that one side so that the said self-adhesive side can be brought into overlying registration with, and facing, the said one side, and a removable protective liner, covering a major part of the self adhesive side of the overlay for removal after entry of such information on the said one side, to permit the self-adhesive side to be pressed against the one side, over the entered information, so that the overlay thereafter provides an adhesively secured transparent covering inhibiting tampering with that information.
We have now arrived at a design of sealed envelope or pouch which is more versatile in that it can be used for secure display of any appropriate article inserted therein.
In one aspect the present invention provides a blank for a sealed display envelope, pouch, or pocket comprising first and second sheets of plastics material attached at one edge so that the first sheet can be brought into overlying registration with the second sheet at least one of the sheets having a self-adhesive side facing the other sheet and covered over all or a (major) part of its surface with removable protective liner.
In another aspect the invention provides a method for making a sealed display envelope, pouch or pocket for an article inserted therein, said method comprising providing an envelope blank comprising first and second plastic sheets attached together at one edge so that a self adhesive side of the first sheet can be brought into overlying registration with and facing the second sheet, at least one of said sheets being transparent, and one or more removable protective liners covering all of or a major part of the self-adhesive side(s) of the first sheet, inserting the article between the first and second sheets, removing the protective liner from the adhesive side of the first sheet; and bringing the first sheet into contact with the article so that it adheres thereto and pressing regions of the first sheet projecting beyond the periphery of said article into contact with the second sheet so as to seal the envelope.
The envelope blank is of particular value for the presentation of security documents, membership cards, staff passes or the like, in a more robust and attractive presentation than simple paper cards currently in widespread use. It also has the advantage that the information on the card is preserved in a relatively tamper-proof manner, that is to say, that alteration of the information carried is difficult and an attempt at tampering is immediately evident. The envelope pouch blanks are inexpensive to manufacture and therefore acceptable to the users. Where the user wishes to incorporate a bar coded label in the internal sheet which is read by an optical reader (e.g., in a library bar code system) the traditional pockets contain air which makes reading of the coded information difficult. With the present type of envelope pouches the air can readily be expelled to bring the bar coded label into direct contact with the overlay sheet so that reading of the label is facilitated.
At least one of the plastics sheets making up the envelope blank is transparent i.e., it transmits rays of light without substantial diffusion so that the underlying side of the article can be distinctly seen. However, the or each plastics sheet can be of coloured transparent material and may bear areas of printing or areas of solid colour provided that the article may be sufficiently seen to display the article within the envelope in the intended manner. Commonly both sheets will be of transparent material. Depending on the intended use of the envelope, either sheet may carry a single self-adhesive coating on one or both of its faces.
The envelope blank has an advantage for security application, e.g., for identity cards or for bus, train or air tickets where information is recorded on sheet material in a removable manner. In such a case, an adhesive coated side of one of the sheets is adhered over the information bearing the sheet and adheres thereto.
Subsequent attempts to open the envelope and alter the information on the sheet will fail because the sheet will tear and/or the information will remain adhered to the overlying plastics sheet.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating an envelope pouch blank according to the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view illustrating the use of the envelope blank to make a safeguarded identity card; and Figures 3 and 4 are respectively a view in longitudinal section and a plan view of an identity card made from the envelope blank.
The envelope blank of Figure 1 comprises a generally rectangular transparent (or coloured or printed) plastics sheet 1 to one side of which is secured along a strip 5 a transparent (or coloured or printed) plastics sheet-form overlay 3 having a self-adhesive side the major part of which is covered by a removable protective liner 4 of release coated paper or other material, e.g., paper coated with a layer of silicone. The self-adhesive side of the overlay sheet 3 faces towards the plastics sheet 1. An information-bearing sheet or card 6 or other insert of paper or other material such as a coin, photograph, membership card, library ticket or railway ticket which is usually smaller than the envelope blank is placed between the sheets 1 and 3 as shown in Figure 2, after which the liner 4 is peeled back from the selfadhesive side of the overlay sheet 3 in the manner depicted in Figure 2.When the liner 4 has been removed the overlay 3 is pressed down into overlying registration with the sheet 1 so that the portion of the self-adhesive face of the sheet 3 in contact with the sheet or card 6 adheres thereto and marginal portions 7 of the sheets 3 extending beyond the sheet or card 6 also adhere to the sheet 1 to form a completed envelope in which the card 6 is protected from ingress of moisture or dirt and is of increased rigidity. The final assembly is resistant to tampering either with the insert or with the information on the card. The marginal portions 7 are typically between 1/16 and 7/1 6 inch wide. The envelope can be sealed by manual pressure after insertion of the sheet or card 6 and the sealing can be carried out on the spot by the issuing person or authority without the need for any special laminating equipment.
The sheet 1 is usually of clear preferably glossy transparent plastics material such as polyvinychloride sheet of thickness 0.002-0.030 inches usually 0.005-0.025 inches and preferably 0.010--0.020 inches and the overlay sheet 3 is usually of glossy transparent plastics material between 0.002-0.030 inches thick, typically 0.003-0.01 0 inches thick and preferably about 0.005 inches thick. A convenient size for an envelope made from a blank embodying the present invention is about 3 5/1 6 inches (8.5 cms) long and about 2 1/8 inches (5.4 cms) wide (or 1 inch longer or shorter and 1 inch wider or narrower.
Various modifications can of course be made to the above described embodiment without departing from the invention, whose scope is defined in the appended claims. For example, the sheet 1 can also be provided with a self-adhesive face directed towards the sheet 3, said selfadhesive face being protected prior to use of the envelope by means of a sheet of release paper, etc.
Either of sheets 1 or 3 could be provided with a self-adhesive other side as well as, or instead of a self-adhesive face side (so that the final assembly may be stuck to, for example, a car windscreen or shop window). The envelopes could be used for the labelling of plants to be sold, for example, by nurseries or garden centres, in which case they will normally be somewhat smaller than the security card version of the envelope, typically about 2 inches by 1 inch. The envelopes can also be used to seal in menu cards for restaurants in which case they will be made in larger sizes.
Furthermore, the envelope blank may be made with a punch hole(s) for a clip, pin, tag or means of fixing the final assembly to a person or article (as a badge, label or notice, etc.) The first or self-adhesive coated sheet may also have one or more blank regions i.e. regions uncoated with adhesive, provided that the first sheet should have an unadhesive coated region about its periphery. Thus the sheets may be sealed together so that an object such as a stamp may be preserved within the display envelope unadhered to either the first or second sheets and may be removed when required.
