Abstract
An electrical machine, especially an alternator for motor vehicles, is proposed, the rotor 12 of which is mounted in at least one roller bearing 30. The outer track ring 44 of the bearing consists of sintered steel and is impregnated with an oil as a lubricant. Moreover, a supply of lubricant (50) can be provided in the housing of the machine from which the lubricant can arrive at the periphery of the outer track ring 44 of the bearing under the action of centrifugal force. Due to the capillary action in the track ring 44 and its deformation occurring periodically during operation, the lubricant is transported to the bearing surface of the outer track ring 44 and from there is transported to the inner track ring of the bearing by the rollers 30. In that manner, used lubricant is continually replaced by fresh lubricant and the life of the bearing is increased. If necessary, the roller bearing can also be filled in the usual manner with a grease compatible with the lubricating oil. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
An Electrical Machine, Especially an Alternator for Motor Vehicles
State of the Art
The invention originates from a machine according to the preamble to the main claim. With the known machines of this kind, the roller bearings are filled with grease as a lubricant. The life of these bearings is limited by the fact that due to ageing and mechanical stress the grease is gradually used up and loses its iubricating properties until the bearing finally runs dry and seizes. It has been further proposed for lubricating roller bearings to provide radial bores in one or in both track rings of the bearings for supplying the lubricant, and to so arrange the bores that they issue into the zone of highest stress of the bearing surface, (German Specification 909 270).This arrangement has the disadvantage that the bearing surface of the track rings are interrupted many times by the bores for the lubricant just in the zone of the highest stress whereby the wear on the bearing is encouraged. With slide bearings, it is known to provide bearing shells of sintered metal which are surrounded by a supply of grease from which the lubricant reaches the sliding surface of the bearing through the capillary forces acting in the bearing shell (German AS 1137274).
Advantages of the Invention
As opposed to this, the arrangement in accordance with the invention comprising the characterising features of the main claim has the advantage that the bearing surface on the outer track ring of the roller bearing has no interruptions due to issuing lubricant bores and that, consequently, a more reliable lubrication is guaranteed by providing the lubricant, preferably oil, through the capillaries in the track ring. Both features contribute to the increase in the life of the roller bearing. The lubricant is also transmitted by the rollers to the inner track ring of the bearing so that special measures for its lubrication are not required. The reduction in strength of the outer track ring produced by the use of sintered steel does not affect the life of the roller bearing because lower surface pressures occur in any case at the outer track ring than at the inner track ring. The supply of lubricant to the outer bearing surface of the bearing is provided by the deformation which the outer track ring experiences during operation of the machine.
Thus, the previously known and used capillary effect in the sintered bearing material of slide bearings provided with substantially larger bearing surfaces can also be used with advantage for roller bearings wherein the lubricant attempts to reach the highest loaded zones of the bearing surfaces. Oil can preferably be used as a lubricant with which the outer track ring of the bearing is impregnated after sintering and finishing in a vacuum.
If necessary, the roller bearing can also be filled in the usual manner with a grease compatible with the lubricating oil.
Advantageous further developments of the arrangement set forth in the main claim are made possible by the measures set forth in the subclaims.
The lubricant storage can be increased if an annular chamber filled with lubricant is provided between the bore in the fixed part of the machine receiving the roller bearing and the outer track ring of the roller bearing, the annular chamber preferably being formed by an annular groove in the bore.
It is of particular advantage when this annular chamber is in communication with a supply of lubricant from which the lubricant arrives at least substantially over the entire periphery of the outer roller bearing track ring under the influence of centrifugal force.
Drawing
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing and is described in detail in the following specification. The single figure shows an alternator of claw pole construction for motor vehicles in longitudinal section.
Description of the Embodiment
The generator has a housing 10, in which a rotor 12 is rotatably mounted, made up of two half shells. The rotor 12 has a shaft 14 onto which are forced a pole core 1 6 and two claw pole wheels 1 8 and 20. An energising winding 22 which is connected by conductors 24 and 26 to the slip rings (not visible in the drawing) is mounted on the pole core 16. The rotor 12 is surrounded externally by a stator 28 which is rigidly clamped between the two half shells of the housing 10.
The shaft 14 is mounted at one end in a ball bearing 30 which is mounted in a bore 32 in the housing and is rigidly clamped in the bore by screws 34 through an annular member 36 sealing the interior of the housing. Bushes 38 and 40 are arranged on the shaft 14 on both sides of the ball bearing 30, which ensure the mutual position of the parts by mounting a V-belt pulley on the shaft 14 with the aid of the nut 42.
The ball bearing 30 has an outer track ring 44 which consists of sintered steel, especially sintered ball bearing steel, and is impregnated in a vacuum with oil as a lubricant. An annular groove 46 is provided in the bore 32 and is connected through a radially upwardly extending duct 48 to a bore 50 of larger diameter. This serves as a supply of lubricant and can be filled at the top through an opening which can be closed by a threaded plug 52. Under the influence of centrifugal force, the lubricant runs into the annular groove 46 from whence it arrives at the bearing surface of the track ring 44 and from there through the ball to the bearing surface of the inner ball bearing ring, through the capillary affect and through the deformation of the track ring 44 occurring periodically during operation.
The ball bearing 30 is protected on each side against the ingress of dust and dirt by two discs 54.
