Abstract

A door hinge has a lower hinge part (4) connected to the frame, an upper hinge part (5) connected to the door and a pivot pin (7) forming a pivot axis between the two hinge parts. An adjustment device comprises in one embodiment a threaded pin (15) connected to or integrally formed with pivot pin (7). The pin (15) threadedly engages in the lower hinge part (4) and the upper hinge part (5) abuts against the upper end of the threaded pin (15). The spacing between the upper and lower hinge parts (4, 5) can therefore be adjusted by rotating the threaded pin (15) in the lower hinge part (4) thereby to correct the vertical position of the door relatively to the frame. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Adjustable door hinge The invention relates to a door hinge with a first hinge partforfixing to a door and a second hinge part for fixing to a door frame, and a pivot pin which forms a pivot axis between the two hinge parts.
There is a need with door hinges for it to be possible to correct the positioning of the door relative to the door frame after the door has been hung, either because the door has dropped under its own weight or because the door or the frame material has become distorted for example due to the effect of different levels of humidity.
The invention is intended to solve the problem of providing a door hinge which allows simple, smooth correction of the vertical positioning of a door.
According to the invention there is provided a door hinge with a first hinge part for fixing to a door and a second hinge part for fixing to a door frame, and a pivot pin forming a pivot axis between the two hinge parts which in use are disposed one above the other, characterised in that in one hinge part, which is the lower hinge part in use, there is an internal thread in which a threaded pin engages, the pin being axially adjustable and co-acting with the other hinge part to adjust the spacing between the two hinge parts and hence in use the vertical positioning of the door relatively to the door frame.
The invention makes it possible to carry out in simple manner a smooth correction of the vertical positioning of a door, without having to take the door off.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a vertical section through a first embodiment of an adjustable door hinge, Figure 2 is a view of the door hinge shown in Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrow B, Figure 3 is a view of a second embodiment of adjustable door hinge, Figure 4 is a view of the pivot pin of the embodiment shown in Figure 3, Figure 5 is a section through the lower hinge part of the embodiment shown in Figure 3, Figure 6 is a view of a rotation-preventing screw used in the embodiment shown in Figure 3, Figure 7 is a vertical section through a third embodiment of door hinge, Figure 8 is a vertical section through a fourth embodiment of door hinge, and Figure 9 shows a fifth embodiment of door hinge, which is modified version of the Figure 8 embodiment.
In the first embodiment of adjustable door hinge shown in Figures 1 and 2, the door hinge comprises a lower hinge part 4, a middle hinge part 5 and an upper hinge part 6. The lower and upper parts 4 and 6 are each attached by means of a threaded supporting pin 10 to a door frame made of wood or metal. The interposed middle hinge part 5 is attached by means of a door hinge leaf 19 to the edge surface of a door. The door hinge leaf 1 9 is of arcuate shape over approximately 3/4 of its periphery, and has a counter-sunk bore 21 at its centre for accommodating a fixing screw.
The lower hinge part 4 comprises a sleeve 8 to which the supporting pin 10 is rigidly connected and from which the pin 10 projects. Engaging in the top and bottom of this sleeve 8 are bushes 9 which are rotatably supported in the bore of the sleeve 8. The two bushes 9 are of identical construction and project beyond the top and bottom of the sleeve 8. They are pressed onto a central threaded pin 15 and are thereby fixed against rotation relatively to the pin 1 5. The bore of the sleeve 8 has a central portion which is of reduced diameter as compared with end portions of the bore locating the bushes 9, the end portions joining with the central portion through radial shoulders. Between the inner ends of the bushes 9 and the radial shoulders of the sleeve 8 are annular spaces 11, which permit adjustment of the positions of the bushes 9.The bore of the sleeve 8 in its central portion has a thread 12 in which the threaded pin 1 5 engages. The lower bush 9 has locating means for a tool, particularly a central internal hexagonal openings 13, so that it can be rotated in one or other direction with the aid of a suitable key (after the pivot pin 7 has been pushed upwards), with the result that the threaded pin 1 5, and with it the two bushes 9, are displaced in one or other axial direction of the sleeve bore.
Thus since the upper bush 9 abuts surface 1 6 of the middle hinge part 5 the middle hinge part 5 is moved upwards or downwards. This adjustment of the middle hinge part 5 and hence of the vertical positioning of the door produces a change in the gap 17 relative to the upper hinge part 6. To reduce friction the middle hinge part 5 is provided with at least one plastics bearing ring 1 4.
As well as the middle hinge part 5, both of the hinge parts 4 and 6 are symmetrical with respect to the pivot pin and can each be rotated through 1 80C so that with a corresponding rotary movement of the threaded supporting pins 10, adjustment of the positioning can be achieved.
In order to prevent unintentional rotation of the threaded pin 1 5 relative to the thread 12, a plastics pin 1 8 is inserted in the sleeve 8, and provides increased friction on the thread, thereby preventing any inadvertent alteration of the relative position between the threaded pin 1 5 and the sleeve 9. By simply raising up the pivot pin 7 - without removing it - it is therefore possible to adjust the positioning of the door from below the hinge.
In Figures 3 to 6 a second embodiment of an adjustable door hinge is shown. A lower two-part hinge part 4 is secured in a door frame 3 by means of a supporting pin 10 screwed into a bearing block 36. The bearing block 36 and the door frame 3 are connected rigidly to each other. To prevent rotation of the lower hinge part 4 an unthreaded supporting pin 24 is located in a second, lower bore in the bearing block 35 and projects radially outwards from lower cylindrical part 22 of the lower hinge part 4. A pin member 1 5 has an externally threaded section 39 which is partly screwed from above into the internal thread 30 in the sleeve 8 forming the upper part of the lower hinge part 4.The uppermost part of the pin member 1 5 is cylindrical and is unthreaded and its upper end defines an annular shoulder 34 against which the upper hinge part 5 connected to the door abuts via a plastics bearing ring 14. The pin member 15 connects with and is preferably integrally formed with pivot pin 7 which locates in the axial bore in the hinge part 5. By screwing the pin member 15 into or out of the sleeve 8 the vertical positioning of the hinge part 5 is adjusted, and with it also the door to which the hinge part 5 is connected. To prevent unintentional rotation of the pin member 15 relative to the sleeve 8 a screw 26 with a head 27 is provided. This screw 26 passes through the cylindrical part 22 and engages from below in the threaded axial bore 32 in the pin member 1 5 via its thread 28.By rotating the pin member 15 it is therefore possible to adjust the vertical position of the door, whereby the annular space inside the sleeve 8 is changed.
Rotation of the pin member 1 5 is facilitated by a hexagonal recess 33 at the upper end of the pivot pin 7.
The door frame 3 may be made of either metal or wood.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 3 the upper hinge part 5 preferably has a leaf which can be connected to the edge surface of the door and which is located in a circular recess in the edge surface of the door and screwed to it.
A modification to Figure 3 consists in inserting the pivot pin 7 from above into the hinge parts 4 and 5 and threadedly connecting it to the lower cylindrical part 22.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 7 a sleeve of upper hinge part 5 abuts against a shoulder 34 defined by an integral cylindrical collar 35 on pivot pin 7. The pivot pin 7 is screwed intc the threaded sleeve comprising the lower hinge part 4 by its threaded shank 40. So that the pivot pin 7 cannot be rotated unintentionally a threaded pin 55 with a left-hand thread is screwed into the hinge part 4 from below. The threaded pin 55 has at its lower end an internal hexagonal recess 29 and the pivot pin 7 has at its upper end an internal hexagonal recess 33 so that a tool can be used to adjust and lock the threaded shank 40 in order to position the shoulder 34 at a desired height. The sleeve of the lower hinge part 4 has an unthreaded cylindrical bore 37 at its upper end for locating the collar 35 and into or out of which the annular space 37 is moved to permit adjustment of the threaded shank 40. The collar 35 on the pivot pin 7 is a close rotational fit within the bore 37.
Thus the vertical positioning of the door 2 can be adjusted by adjusting the position of the shoulder 34 and hence the spacing the hinge part 5 from the hinge part 4.
The two parallel supporting pins 10 projecting from the lower hinge part 6 are inserted in corresponding bores 48 in a bearing block 36 which is rigidly connected to the frame 3.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 8 adjustment of the vertical positioning of the upper hinge part 5 connected to the door can be effected by means of a threaded pin 1 5 which is screwed from below into a threaded bore in the lower hinge part 4. The pivot pin 7 which is integral with the upper hinge part 5 and is inserted from above into the hinge part 4 rests via its lower end on the threaded pin 15, which has a pointed upper end.
Hence adjustment of the position of the pin 15 will vary the spacing of the hinge parts 4 and 5 and hence the vertical positioning of the door.
The embodiment shown in Figure 9 is generally similar to the embodiment of Figure 8. However, instead of the threaded pin 15 engaging directly against pivot pin 15, a hardened ball 44 is located in the upper end of threaded pin 15, which is preferably made of plastics material and the pivot pin 7 has an insert 45 which rests against the ball 44. The insert 45 is made of hard material which is as wear-resistant as possible. By rotating the threaded pin 15 in one or other direction by means of a tool engaged in the internal hexagonal recess 29 the spacing of the upper hinge part 5 from the lower hinge part 4 can be adjusted as in the Figure 8 embodiment.
The various embodiments described may be used in combination, insofar as this is rational and technically possible. In particular, all hinge parts 5 can be equipped with a door hinge leaf 19 as shown in Figure 1.
