Abstract
A refiner for cleaning the oil from an internal combustion engine comprises a body 7 containing a filter material 15 capped by a felt 16 and a compressor plate 17. Above the compressor plate 17 is a thermal cover 18 containing an electric heater 19. Oil enters the body from the output of the engine's oil pump, passes through the filter material, contacts the heater and leaves through exit pipe 15' to the engine's rocker box. The heater is controlled by a pressure switch 8 which monitors the oil pressure in body 7. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Oil refiner-evaporator
This invention relates to a device suitable for use on a motor car engine, which can refine engine oils, preferably mineral oils, taken from the base of the engine, after which they are returned to the rocker box.
The new refiner can be a very rugged device and perfectly dimensioned for continuous operation without failure. It will generally have the following main parts: coupling elements; intake; regulator; ducting and oil outlet; filtering body; and thermal upper cover.
Thus, the present invention consists in a refiner for oil comprising: a body having an inlet and an outlet, and containing a filter material capped by a compressor plate provided with overflow levels, and having a thermal cover provided with an electrical heater controlled by pressure of oil in the refiner; the oil passes into the inlet, through the filter material, through the compressor plate, is heated by the heater, and leaves through the outlet.
The filter material is preferably cotton, and I prefer that a pressed wool felt is provided between the filter material and the compressor plate.
The invention also consists in an oil system for an internal combustion engine, having the inlet of the refiner of the invention connected to the output from the engine oil pump and the outlet of the refiner connected to the engine's rocker box. A restriction one-way valve can be provided between the oil pump and the inlet to the refiner to prevent oil in the refiner returning to the engine's pump when the engine is stopped.
If this system is present in a motor car, the electrical heater can be connected in series with the vehicle's ammeter, which can then provide an instant indication whether the refiner is working properly.
The invention is further illustrated, by way of example, by the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a general view of a refiner and its relation with the components of an engine;
Figure 2 shows a vertical cross-section of the refiner with details of links and intakes;
Figure 3 shows, on a larger scale, detail of a coupling element; and
Figure 4 shows, also on a larger scale, details of the base of the refiner body.
An engine 1 has lubricant to be refined taken from an outlet to a filter 2, cancelling it and giving it a double direction, to avoid reducing the lubrication of the engine, by means of a splicing provided by valves 4 of the oil outlet at its own pressure which, because of control valve 5, only admits that amount of oil which the refiner can cope with.
Another valve 6 prevents the reverse discharge when the engine stops. This second valve is connected through a tube 3, under pressure, to the centre of the base of the body 7 of the refiner. This connection to the base of the body 7 is by means of a special nozzle and pressure flanges.
The body 7 of the refiner, which is preferably perfectly cylindrical, may be mounted on the engine 1 by flanges 9 which surround the body. The lower part of the body is filled with a certain amount of filter material 15, for example a special filtering cotton, onto which may be placed a cap, such as a special pressed wool felt. A compressor plate 1 7 having overflow levels to catch any sediment which may pass through the filter, is provided as a cap for the filter material. A thermal cover 1 8 of particular size covers all of these components, and houses in an inner alveole a resistance 1 9 encased in asbestos 23, and closed by a counter cover 24 secured by a gudgeon pin 22 and wing nut 1 3.
The resistance 1 9 may be connected to power in any suitable way. In the drawings, one lead goes to earth 1 2 and the other via a fuse to the lower part of the body 7, where a pressure switch 8 is fixed. This pressure switch 8 will close when the oil pressure exceeds a certain value. The switch will be regulated to consume, for example the charge of the dynamo of a vehicle, by connecting it in series with the ammeter mounted on the dashboard, and thence to the ignition key.
Operation of the refiner can therefore be observed simply by looking at the ammeter 10.
1. A refiner for oil comprising: a body having an inlet and an outlet for oil, and containing a filter material capped by a compressor plate provided with overflow levels, and having a thermal cover provided with an electrical heater controlled by pressure of oil in the refiner; the oil passes into the inlet, through the filter material, through the compressor plate, is heated by the heater, and leaves through the outlet.
2. A refiner according to claim 1, having a pressure switch mounted on its base for controlling the heater.
3. A refiner according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the filter material is cotton.
4. A refiner according to any of any of claims 1, 2 and 3, having a pressed wool felt between the filter material and the compressor plate.
5. A refiner substantially as herein described with reference to any one of the accompanying drawings.
6. An oil system for an internal combustion engine, having a refiner according to any one of the preceding claims, the inlet of the refiner being connected to the output from the engine's oil pump, and the outlet connected
