Abstract

Apparatus for unloading bulk material e.g. from within the hold of a vessel with a means comprising a bulk material pick up head (7). The head (7) is set in rotary motion about a substantially vertical axis of rotation (P), the radius of rotation (R) of this motion and the plane of rotation (T) of this motion being changeable during the pick up work. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Procedure for unloading bulk goods from within the hold of a vessel, for instance The present invention concerns a procedure for unloading, e.g. from within the hold of a vessel, bulk goods with a means comprising a bulk goods detacher head.
The object of the present invention is to provide a new type of method for unloading bulk goods and which is superior to any methods of prior art as regards speed, ease of operation and operating costs.
The procedure of the invention is characterized in that the detacher head is set in rotary motion about a substantially vertical axis of rotation, the radius of rotation and plane of rotation of this motion being changeable during the detaching work. By the aid of the invention, a detacher head of light-weic,ht construction enables in the hold of a vessel such points to be accessed easily and swiftly which could not be accessed in prior art.
The detacher head has an exceedingly large action radius without any displacement of other parts of the means.
A favourable embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the radius of rotation of the rotary motion is so changed that the lower part of the detacher head keeps a substantially unchanged distance from the pivot point. The result is thus achieved that by such changing of the radius of rotation a spherical calotte-shaped face is produced in the bulk goods to be detached, from which the bulk goods is detached in resemblance of a chipping process.
Another embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the distance of the point from the axis of rotation of the detacher head's rotary motion is maintained substantially constant. In spite of the movements of the detacher head, the bulk goods is discharged, as a consequence, at the top end of the detacher head at the same point, whence it can be easily lifted out from the vessel's hold with an elevator, for instance.
A third embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the detacher head is so displaced at the detaching step that the straight line connecting the detacher head and the point subtends an acute angle with the axis of rotation of the detacher head's rotary motion or is parallel therewith. With an angle which is less than 60 degrees an extensive enough range of operation is achieved.
The invention also concerns a detacher head for carrying out the procedure. The detacher head of the invention is characterized in that the detacher head consists of an endless chain elevator turning at its top end around a horizontal shaft and carrying buckets affixed to it. A detacher head of this type has the advantage of a light-weight construction, thanks to which it can be handled with ease and speed.
The invention is described in the following with the aid of an example and with reference to the attached drawing, showing the detacher head in elevational view.
The detacher head 7 consists of an endless chain elevator 1 5 turning at the top around a horizontal shaft A and carrying affixed to it a plurality of buckets 1 6. The chain elevator may be turned with the aid of hydraulic cylinders 1 7 about its axis A to point outwardly at an angle a. The detacher head 7 is set in rotation about a substantially vertical axis of rotation P, the radius of rotation R of this motion and its plane of rotation T both being changeable during the detaching operation.
Owing to its wide range of action, the detacher head is suited for use in the holds of large as well as small vessels. Owing to its simplicity, the detacher head is also light and advantageous from the viewpoint of manufacturing technique.
It is obvious to a person skilled in the art that different embodiments of the invention may vary within the scope of the claims presented below.
