Abstract

In the method a blank is formed and the blank shaped into a container by deep drawing or by another equivalent shaping process. The blank is formed between forming-surfaces (4, 5) movable relatively to one another, by introducing in the space (8) between the surfaces a sheet-like piece (1) of plastics, upon which a plastics material (13) is cast; the piece being cut from a sheet of the material. The blank thus produced comprises, depending on the structure of said sheet-like piece of plastics, two or more superimposed material plies. This optimizes the properties of the plastics container by combining different materials and, in relation to the prior method of forming the containers directly from a sheet of material, reduces the waste of material. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Procedure for manufacturing a plastics container The present invention concerns a method for manufacturing a plastics container, of the kind in which in the space between relatively movable forming surfaces plastics material is introduced to produce a board-like blank, and in which the blank is subsequently shaped to the container by applying deep drawing or another equivalent plastics treating process.
A two-step procedure for manufacturing singly ply plastics containers, comprising die casting and deep drawing, has been applied e.g. in the manufacturing or beverage beakers and equivalent foodstuff containers. In this method an apparatus is used which comprises a substantially level surface and a piston moving reciprocating with reference thereto, and the batch of plastics material for one container is pressed between these to become a blank. Between the said surface and the piston remain stiff supports presenting a groove which is filled with plastics in this forming step. It is therefore possible to transport the blank which has been produced, borne by the supports, to the next forming step, and the plastics in said groove will then constitute, at the mouth aperture of the container, a flanged border or lip encircling it.The method has the substantial advantage that the plastics batch in its entirety is used towards forming the plastics container, so that no waste at all is incurred. This procedure has been applied in practice with a great number of different plastics materials, such as polystyrene and polypropylene for instance.
The properties of foodstuff and other containers manufactured by the procedure just described are variable, depending on the plastics material used.
As a consequence, the properties of the container are frequently lacking in one respect or another.
For instance, a foodstuff container made of polystyrene has the drawback that it is not gastight.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate the drawback mentioned and to enable plastics containers to be manufactured by a procedure of the kind described which are superior to plastics containers of prior art in their properties. In the present invention, in the space between the forming surfaces is brought, before introducing the plastics material, a sheet-like piece of plastics, upon which the plastics material is conducted so that the blank produced in this forming step, and the container that will be shaped therefrom, will have at least two super-imposed material plies. It is thus understood that by the procedure is obtained a multi-ply plastics container, of which materials may be selected so that they suitably supplement each other as regards their properties. The said sheet-like piece of plastics may be made e.g. by cutting from a sheet consisting of the plastics in question.
The advantage of the present invention may be seen by comparing it with a method of the prior art where plastics containers are made of plastics sheet by a deep drawing process and subsequent cutting of the individual containers from the sheet.
In the procedure in question, considerable unused material remains between the containers, and whenever this, as in manufacturing multi-ply containers, comprises at least two different plastics materials, it is unfit for reuse and is therefore completely lost. In contrast, in the method of the present invention, only the sheetlike pieces of plastics constituting the extra ply are made by cutting, and in that case the cutting can take place with considerably closer spacing and more efficient use of the sheet, and whereby the loss of material can be reduced.
If the plastics material are used in the superimposed courses of the container which are chemically interrelated, the plies can be made to adhere to each other without any difficulty.
Otherwise, it will be necessary to place an adhesive between the material plies, which may, for instance, be applied on the surface of the sheet-like piece of plastics introduced between the forming surfaces. It is possible to use as adhesive, for instance, ethyl vinyl acetate, which can be applied as a liquid on the plastics surface.
As an example of foodstuff containers manufactured as taught by the invention there may be mentioned a multi-ply container with an inner ply of polypropylene (PP) and an outer ply consisting of a polyethylene/polyvinyl dichloride/polyethylene (PE/PVDC/P E) multi-ply film and which is manufactured by placing between the forming surfaces a PE/PVDC/PE film and introducing thereupon PP, subsequent to which these are pressed to form a multi-ply blank and are then further formed into a container. In a container of this type, the surface in contact with the foodstuff consists of PP, and PVDC serves as its outside, gas-tight course.
The invention is described in detail in the following with reference of an embodiment thereof and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which~ Fig. 1 presents an apparatus used for forming the blank in which a sheet-like piece of plastics has been placed between the forming surfaces, Fig. 2 shows the apparatus of Fig. 1, in which the batch of material of the second course has been introduced between the forming surfaces.
Fig.3 shows the apparatus of Fig. 1 at the stage where the plastics material has been pressed to be a two-ply blank, Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate the deep drawing of the blank to become a container, and Fig. 6 displays the completed plastics container.
In Figs. 1 through 3 is illustrated, step by step, the manufacturing of a blank 3 composed of two superimposed plastics material courses 1, 2, by forming between two opposed forming surfaces 4, 5. The apparatus comprises a reciprocatingly moving piston 6 disposed in a cylinder, and the cover part 7 placed thereagainst; and between the piston and the cover part there remains a space 8 delimited by the said forming surfaces 4, 5. The apparatus further comprises supports 9 bordering the space 8 and which have been given such shape that they constitute a groove 10 encircling the space. The cover part 7 has in its centre a hole 11, through which the plastics material can be introduced in the space 8; and with a view to inserting the piece of plastics 1 in its proper place and removal of the finished blank 3, the cover part 7, supports 9 and piston 4 with cylinder are detachable from each other.
In Fig. 1 is seen the initial step of the blank manufacturing, where in the space 8 and upon the surface 4 has been placed a thin sheet-like piece of plastics 1, which will constitute the lower material course of the blank 3. The piece of plastics 1 has on its surface a thin course of adhesive 12, which will bind together the superimposed material courses used to form the blank. At the next step, conforming to Fig. 2, plastics material 13 is introduced in the space 8 through the hole 11 in the cover part 7.
Thereafter, forming is carried out with the aid of the piston 6, whereupon the plastics material 13 spreads over the piece of plastics 1 to form a uniform material layer 2, and the groove 10 bordering the space 8 is filled with plastics. The blank 3 thus obtained, and which consists of two superimposed plies 1, 2, is seen in Fig. 3.
The shaping of the blank 3 by deep drawing into a container is carried out using the apparatus depicted in Figs. 4 and 5, comprising a die part 14 and a drawing ram 15 moving relatively thereto.
The blank 3 is not detached from the supports 9 after the pressing step; it is transported, supported by them, to the mouth of the die part 14 as shown in Fig. 4. The drawing ram 15 is then moved towards the bottom of the die part 14 and, at the same time, a vaccum is created below the blank 3 by applying suction through the passages 16. The final stage of the deep drawing process, in which the blank has been shaped into a container with a shape like that of the die 14, is shown in Fig. 5, and Fig. 6 presents the completed plastics container 17, removed from the die. This container consists of two superimposed plastic materials plies, whereof the outer has been produced from the piece of plastics 1 placed in the space 8 and the inner, from the plastics material 13 introduced in the same space. The width of the container 17 at its mouth is substantially equal to the width of the space 8, and the mouth is encircled by a flanged-like border or lip 18, which has been shaped in the groove 10 of the supports.
The shape and material of the container may vary widely, and the uses which the container is made to serve are not exclusively confined to foodstuffs. The apparatus used in the manufacturing of the container may also differ from what has been presented in the foregoing. It is possible, for instance, if necessary, to heat the plastics material that is being pressed by the aid of a heating fluid conducted through the piston, or by another equivalent arrangement.
