Abstract
This sealing ring comprises an annular element of an elastomeric material 2 and a metallic reinforcement part constituted by steel wire hoops 3 incorporated in the elastomeric material. The hoops 3 are preferably constituted of multistrand steel wire twisted together. For large diameters, several concentric rows of hoops 3 are incorporated. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Watertight joint for the coupling of interlocking pipes
The present invention concerns a watertight joint for the coupling of interlocking pipes, particularly outlet or drain pipes made of a synthetic extruded material, this joint comprising an annular element of an elastomeric material and a metallic reinforcement part incorporated in the said annular element, described in particular in Swiss patent No. (patent application 4'871/79-9). Although these joints serve quite suitably and guarantee perfect imperviousness between pipes coupled together, their manufacture creates some problems since it is relatively difficult to imbed a flat ring in an elastomeric mass.
The present invention proposes to remedy this inconvenience by manufacturing a joint as mentioned above, simply and economically, by means of techniques tested in other technical fields such as that of pneumatics.
With this aim in mind, the invention is characterized in that the metallic reinforcement part comprises at least one steel wire hoop embedded in the thick part of the joint and placed concentrically with respect to the exterior surfaces of the annular part.
The present invention will be better understood with reference to the description of a realization example and to the attached drawing on which:
Figure 1 represents a cross section of a first realization form of a joint according to the invention and
Figure 2 represents a cross section of a second realization form of this joint.
With reference to the above-mentioned figures, the watertight joint 1 represented is composed of an annular element 2 of an elastomeric material, such as, for example, synthetic rubber, in which are incorporated steel wire hoops 3. Hoops 3 are preferably constituted by multiple strands twisted together. In the example shown by Fig. 1, the reinforcement part is composed of five identical hoops placed in a parallel direction to one another and incorporated in the annular element 2, in the neighbourhood of its exterior peripheral surface. In the example illustrated by Fig. 2, the reinforcement part comprises three super-imposed layers of hoops 3, which increases the rigidity of the watertight joint 1.
In this example, the hoops of one and the same line are identical, placed far apart in a parallel direction to one another. The hoops of the different lines have a smaller and smaller diameter in the direction of the interior, in such a way that the three rows of hoops 3 are superimposed, concentrically one with respect to the other and the whole, concentric to the exterior surfaces of joint 1.
Thanks to well-known manufacturing techniques of metal framework pneumatics, it is very easy to incorporate metallic hoops, in particular those made of multi-strand steel wire, in an elastomeric part. Thus an elastic joint is obtained, but which tends to keep its circular form thanks to the radial pressure practised by the reinforcement part# For large diameters of joints, simply increase the number of reinforcement hoops in order to improve the effect and to avoid bad disposition of the joint, leading to a defect in the imperviousness of the connected pipes.
1. Watertight joint for the coupling of interlocking pipes, comprising an annular element of an elastomeric material and a metallic reinforcement part incorporated in the said annular element, characterized in that the metallic reinforcement part comprises at least one steel wire hoop imbedded in the thick part of the joint and placed concentrically with respect to the exterior surfaces of the annular part.
2. Watertight joint according to claim 1, characterized in that the steel wire is constituted by multiple strands of steel twisted together.
3. Watertight joint according to claim 1, characterized in that the reinforcement part comprises a series of identical hoops, placed far apart in a parallel direction to one another.
4. Watertight joint according to claims 1 and 3, characterized in that the reinforcement part comprises a first series of identical hoops placed concentrically with respect to the exterior surfaces of the annular part and at least a second series of identical hoops, the diameters of the said second series being inferior to those of the first series, and the hoops of the second series being placed concentrically inside the hoops of the first series.
5. Watertight joint constructed, arranged and adapted for use substantially as hereinbefore described, and as shown in Fig. 1 or Fig.
2 of the accompanying drawings.
