Abstract

The invention relates to a garment hanger. The garment hanger has a hanging hook formed with a major recess to receive a relatively large diameter rail and a minor recess to receive a relatively small diameter rail, the minor recess leading from the major recess and containing a step to assist retention of the hook on the smaller diameter rail. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECiFICATION A garment hanger The present invention relates to garment hangers, commonly referred to as coat hangers, of the type comprising a hook and a bar extending in opposite directions from the bottom of the hook.
In retail stores it is current practice to store garments in a stockroom by suspending them on garment hangers from a stockroom rail of relatively large diameter, for example 141 inches.
However, when the garments are on display the garment hangers can be suspended on rails or rack arms of the same or substantially smaller diameter, e.g. 38 inch.
On such smaller diameter rack arms, there is e significant danger of hangers being inadvertently unhooked from the rack arms, and there is a need for a hook which will prevent this.
According to the present invention there is provided a garment hanger comprising a hook and a bar suspended from the hook, the concave side of the hook being shaped to define a major recess which tapers towards a throat beyond which it is enlarged to form a minor recess, the minor recess for engagement with an arm of relatively small diameter and the major recess for engagement with an arm of relaitvely large diameter.
The present invention further provides a garment hanger comprising a hook and a bar suspended from the hook, the hook having a neck portion between the uppermost and lowermost portions of the hook, and a terminal portion which extends downwardly from the uppermost portion to its free end, the hook being formed with a major recess for receiving therein an arm of relatively large diameter, and a minor recess for receiving therein an arm of relatively small diameter, the minor recess in said terminal portion leading from the major recess in a substantially horizontal direction away from said neck portion.
In referring herein to the orientation of the hanger, it is assumed that it is suspended from an arm so that the bar of the hanger is substantially horizontal with the hook disposed above the bar.
The invention will now be particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the single figure illustrates a front view of a garment hanger according to the invention. Since the hanger is a laminar moulding it is not necessary to show other views.
As shown in the drawing, the garment hanger comprises a hook 1 from the bottom of which a bar 2 extends in opposite directions. The hook comprises a neck portion la extending between the uppermost portion ib and the lowermost portion 1 c, and a terminal portion 1 d extending downwardly from the uppermost portion.
A tongue 3, or other protrusion, extends from terminal portion 1 dof the hook on the concave side of the hook to define a major recess 4a within the neck portion 1 a of the hook for receiving an arm of relatively large diameter (e.g. 14 inches) and a minor recess 4b for receiving an arm of relatively small diameter (e.g. 8 inch). The minor recess 4b leads off the major recess 4a in a substantially horizontal direction away from the neck portion 1 a of the hook.
The free end of the tongue 3 is upwardly curved to form a throat between the major and minor recesses, and the inside surface of the hook at the throat is very slightly outwardly stepped at 5 to create resistance to withdrawal of the smaller diameter arm from the minor recess.
The garment hanger is conveniently moulded in plastics material, with a thickness of about 8 inch.
However other materials can be used.
1. A garment hanger comprising a hook and a bar suspended from the hook, the concave side of the hook being shaped to define a major recess which tapers towards a throat beyond which it is enlarged to form a minor recess, the minor recess for engagement with an arm of relatively small diameter and the major recess for engagement with an arm of relatively large diameter.
2. A garment hanger comprising a hook and a bar suspended from the hook, the hook having a terminal portion at the free end thereof and a tongue extending from said terminal portion on the concave side of the hook, said tongue defining a relatively small or minor recess with the portion of the hook above the tongue, and a relatively large or major recess with the portions of the hook below the tongue, the relatively large and small recesses communicating with one another.
3. A garment hanger comprising a hook and a bar suspended from the hook, the hook having a neck portion which extends between the uppermost and lowermost portions of the hook, and a terminal portion which extends downwardly from the uppermost portion to its free end, the hook being formed with a major recess for receiving therein an arm of relatively large diameter, and a minor recess for receiving therein an arm of relatively small diameter, the minor recess in said terminal portion leading from the major recess in a substantially horizontal direction away from said neck portion.
4. A garment hanger according to claim 1 or claim 3 wherein the concave surface of the hook is stepped adjacent the junction of the major and minor recesses to oppose the withdrawal of said arm of relatively small diameter from the minor recess.
5. A garment hanger substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
