Abstract

A time-representing image (digital or analogue) on an LCD is recorded on U-V photosensitive material during visual recording of an electrocardiograph on the material. Light, e.g. from a Xenon discharge lamp, may be reflected from the back of the LCD on to the material using a lens (Fig. 2) or may be directed right through the LCD on to the material without using a lens (Fig. 1) or using a lens (Fig. 3). In the latter case, polarising devices are employed either side of the lens. The time-recording light may be produced intermittently by an electrical pulse. Alternatively, the light may be produced continuously, and the time display on the LCD produced intermittently by an electrical pulse.

Description

SPECIFICATION Apparatus for recording an image displayed on a liquid crystal display Technical Field of the Invention This invention relates to apparatus for recording an image displayed on a liquid crystal display and has an important application in recording such images as additional information on electrocardiographs.
Background Art When electrocardiographs are made electrodes are attached to the patient and electrical signals produced during contraction of the muscle of the heart are continuously recorded on a recording medium. Usually these signals are recorded on a magnetic tape which can be replayed at a later date. The magnetic tape can be replayed at high speed, and the electrocardiograph signals transferred to a secondary recording medium to provide a visual copy of the recorded signal. It is often desirable to provide additional information on the secondary recording medium, for example time, and hitherto it has been necessary to stop the recording temporarily while the additional information is recorded on the secondary recording medium. It will be appreciated that this temporary loss of visual record, especially if it occurs at frequent intervals, is disadvantageous in that vital sections of the secondary recording fail to be recorded.
An object of the invention is to provide apparatus which can be utilized to overcome above-mentioned disadvantage.
Disclosure of the Invention According to the present invention apparatus for recording an image displayed on a liquid crystal display comprises, means for producing electromagnetic radiation and transmitting the radiation on to a radiation sensitive recording medium by way of a liquid crystal display, whereby an image displayed by the liquid crystal display is recorded on the radiation sensitive medium.
Preferably the electromagnetic radiation is within the visible spectrum.
The means for producing the electromagnetic radiation may be arranged to direct the radiation onto the radiation sensitive medium through the display produced by the liquid crystal display while the background of the display acts as a mask.
Alternatively, the liquid crystal display may be provided with a radiation reflecting layer, and the means for producing electromagnetic radiation arranged to direct the radiation onto the liquid crystal display so that the radiation passes through the display and is reflected by the radiation reflecting layer onto the radiation sensitive medium.
The apparatus may include a source of electrical pulses arranged to energise the means for producing electromagnetic radiation for a relatively short period of time whenever the display is to be recorded on the radiation sensitive medium.
Alternatively, the means for producing electromagnetic radiation may be energised continuously and a source of electrical pulses arranged to change the polarisation of the liquid crystal display for a relatively short period of time whenever the display is to be recorded on the radiation sensitive medium.
The images displayed by the liquid crystal display may be indicative of time and may comprise a digital representation of time or an analogue representation of time.
The means for producing electromagnetic radiation may comprise an electric discharge lamp or an electric filament lamp.
The invention also resides in a method of recording an image displayed on a liquid crystal display, comprising the steps of producing electromagnetic radiation, and transmitting the radiation onto a radiation sensitive recording medium by way of the liquid crystal display so that an image displayed by the liquid crystal display is recorded on the radiation sensitive medium.
Three embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is a schematic representation of an embodiment of the invention in which the liquid crystal display is used as a mask; Figure 2 is a schematic representation of another embodiment of the invention in which the liquid crystal display is adapted for use as a reflector; and Figure 3 is a schematic representation of a further embodiment of the invention in which the liquid crystal display is used in conjunction with an optical lens system.
Best Mode for Carrying out the Invention Referring in the first instance to Figure 1, an electrocardiograph 1 is arranged to receive electrical signals on a plurality of input leads 2 and obtained by "playing back" a magnetic tape recording made during the contractions of the muscle of the heart of a patient. The electrical signals are continuously recorded on a recording medium 3 to provide a visual record in the form of a plurality of traces, each indicative of an input signal. Typically, the traces would be produced by an ultra-violet oscilloscope and the recording medium 3 would be sensitive paper of a kind which responds to ultra-violet light. The recording medium 31 on which the traces are recorded is wound on a roll 4.
It is often desirable to provide additional information on the recording medium 3, for example, an indication of time at frequent and relatively short intervals, to enable the recorded traces to be evaluated. To this end, in accordance with the invention, a liquid crystal display device 5 is located at or near to an edge of the recording medium 3 or at any other suitable position on the recording medium which is not occupied by the traces. A source 6 of electromagnetic radiation in the visible spectrum, in the present embodiment a xenon-filled electric discharge lamp, is arranged to direct radiation 7 towards the surface 8 of the liquid crystal display device 5 which is superimposed on the edge or other portion of the recording medium 3.
In operation of the apparatus the liquid crystal display device 5 is arranged to display time in digital form and the source 6 of the radiation is arranged to be energised from an electrical pulse source 9 each time the display on the display device 5 is to be recorded on the recording medium 3. The radiation 7 from the source 6 passes through digits forming the display and produces a corresponding image 10 on the recording medium 3, while the "background" of the display behaves as a mask which does not transmit the radiation 7 to the recording medium 3. Suitable shields (not shown) may be provided to prevent the radiation 7 from reaching those parts of the recording medium 3 occupied by the traces.
While it has been found that a source 6 of radiation in the form of xenon-filled discharge lamp will produce images on the kind of sensitive paper referred to above, the source 6 may comprise other forms of electric discharge lamp, electric filament lamp, or other device capable of providing radiation in the visible spectrum, depending on the nature of the recording medium 3.Moreover, if the source 6 is of a kind which cannot be energised for relatively short intervals by pulses from a pulse source 9, for example, an electric filament lamp, then the source 6 may be energised continuously and the polarisation of the display device 5 may be changed for relatively short periods of time by pulses from a pulse source 1 When the display device 5 is pulsed from a pulse source 11 its polarisation can be changed in a manner such that the display transmits the radiation when pulsed but is opaque to the radiation 7 at all other times.
Referring now to Figure 2, in the apparatus shown the electrocardiograph 1, recording medium 3 and roll 4 are arranged substantially as before, but the display device 5 differs in that it is spaced from the recording medium 3 and is provided with a radiation reflecting layer 13 on the surface 14 away from the source 6. The source 6 is arranged to be energised from a pulse source 9 and an optical lens 15 located between the display device 5 and the portion of the recording medium 3 on which the image 10 is to be recorded.
In operation of the apparatus traces are produced on the recording medium 3 in accordance with the signals applied to the input leads 2. When the display on the display device 5 is to be recorded on the recording medium 3, the source 6 is energised by a pulse from the pulse source 9 so that the radiation 7 is directed towards the display device 5. The radiation 7 passes through the parts of the display, device 5 forming the display and is reflected by the reflecting layer 13. The reflected radiation 16 is then focused by the cptical lens 1 5 to form an image 10 on the recording medium 3.
Once again, if the source 6 is of a kind which cannot be energised for relatively short intervals by pulses from a pulse source 9, then the source 6 may be energised continuously and the polarisation of the display device may be changed for relatively short periods of time by pulses from a pulse source 11. In this way the display device 5, which as before may be arranged to display a digital representation of time, may have its polarisation changed to transmit the radiation 7 when pulsed but be opaque to the radiation at all other times.
Turning finally to Figure 3, in which the apparatus shown comprises an electrocardiograph 1, arranged to provide traces on a recording medium 3 in accordance with signals received on input lead 2. The display device 5 is spaced from the recording medium 3 and is located between the radiation source 6 and the recording medium 3. A radiation polarising device 17 is located between the source 6 and the display device 5 while an optical lens 18 is located between the display device 5 and the recording medium 3. A further radiation polarising device 19 is located between the optical lens 18 and the recording medium 3.
In operation of the apparatus traces are produced on the recording medium 3 in accordance with the signals applied to the input leads 2. When the display on the display device 5 is to be recorded on the recording medium 3 the source 6 is energised by a pulse from the pulse source 9. The radiation 7 produced by the source 6 passes through the polarising device 17, through the display on the display device 5, is focused by the lens 18 and passes through the polarising device 19 to produce an image 10 on the recording medium 3. The polarising devices 17 and 1 9 enhance the effect of the polarising layers which are present on the front and back surfaces of a display 5. As before the pulse source 11 may be used in conjunction with a continuously energised source 6.
Although in the embodiments of the invention described above the apparatus of the invention is used in conjunction with an electrocardiograph 1, it will be appreciated that the apparatus of the invention is not limited to this use and is eminently suitable for use with other recording equipment in which it is desirable to provide additional information on the record. Moreover, although the information displayed on the display devices 5 has been described as a digital representation of time it could equally well be an analogue representation of time or any other information relevant to the signals being recorded.
