Starting, facilitating; combined with filters.-A priming and straining device for a centrifugal pump d has a chamber a, Fig. 1, arranged at a level above that of the pump casing, the lower opening being connected to the inlet of the pump while the upper opening is connected to the suction pipe b. A coned tube c is fixed between the two openings as shown in Fig. 1. This arrangement prevents solids in the sewage or like from passing into the pump while it allows air or gas to be entrained by the liquid and passed through the pump. In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the bell-mouthed upper end of the tube c holds a number of tubes c<1> to form a strainer. In another modification a perforated grid arranged round the opening between the lower end of the tube c is replaced by a spirally coiled sheet of metal, the liquid passing through the space between the convolutions, or the coiled metal mav be placed within the mouth of the tube c.
