Description

SPECIFICATION Sunshine roof assembly installation This invention relates to the installation of a so-called "sunshine roof assembly" which can be fitted, as a unit, into an opening in the roof of a vehicle. The invention.is particularly applicable to the installation of a sliding roof assembly of this type.
One method of installing such a sunshine roof assembly, which is currently in use, is to profile the aperture in the vehicle roof to provide a downwardly extending flange and then to fit the roof assembly below the vehicle roof from inside the vehicle. This involves time consuming work both in forming the flange and in touching up the surrounding paintwork which may be damaged when the flange is formed.
In order to overcome these disadvantages, our European Patent Application No.
79302400.1 proposes the provision of a socalled trim mounting ring comprising a rectangular frame, each side of which has a first flange arranged to rest on the vehicle roof surrounding the opening and a second flange extending downwardly into the opening. On the front and sides of the opening, the second flange extends vertically downwards so that these sides have an L-shaped cross section while on the rear edge of the opening the second flange is folded back substantially parallel to the first flange to provide a U-shaped cross section with the edge of the vehicle roof received between the limbs of the U-shape.
Studs are welded to the underneath surfaces of the horizontal limbs of such L-shape so as to extend parallel to the downwardly extending limbs on the sides of L-shaped cross section.
When the ring is to be installed in a vehicle roof, holes are first drilled adjacent to the front and side edges of the opening for receiving the above-mentioned studs. Then the Ushaped cross section is engaged round the rear edge of the opening and the ring is pivoted downwards about such rear edge to bring the remaining sides of the ring into engagement with the vehicle roof. Finally, a nut is fitted on to the bottom end of each stud to fasten the ring to the vehicle roof.
The foregoing method of installation has two disadvantages. Firstly, if the upper surface of the ring in the vicinity of the studs is not to be visibly distorted when the studs are pulled down, it is necessary either for the thickness of the material of the ring to be unduly great or for some reinforcement to be provided in the vicinity of the studs. Secondly, particularly for roof openings of smaller sizes, the engagement of those of the studs closest to the rear edge of the opening in their holes interferes with the pivoting movement as the ring is installed. The present invention overcomes these problems by providing separate components serving the functions of forming the required downwardly extending flange for supporting the roof assembly and covering any paint damage caused during the cutting of the opening in the vehicle roof.
According to the invention in one aspect, a kit of parts for installing a sliding roof assembly in an opening in the roof of a vehicle comprises a trim ring and a mounting member, the trim ring being in the form of a substantially rectangular frame, each side of which has a laterally extending first flange and a second flange attached to the inner edge of the first flange, the second flange on three of the sides extending substantially per pendicularto the first flange so that such sides have an L-shaped cross section and the second flange on the fourth side being folded back substantially parallel to the first flange so that the fourth side has a U-shaped cross section, and the mounting member being of L-shaped cross section and adapted to fit round said three sides of the trim ring with a first limb of the L-shape thereof in abutment with the outwardly facing surface of the second flange on said three sides of the trim ring and a second limb extending parallel to the first flange of the trim ring.
According to the invention in another aspect, a method of installing, in an opening in the roof of a vehicle, a sliding roof assembly having a drain tray adapted to be disposed, in use, below the level of the vehicle roof, comprises the steps of providing a trim ring, in the form of a substantially rectangular frame, each side of which has a laterally extending first flange and a second flange attached to the inner edge of the first flange, the second flange on three of the sides extending substantially perpendicular to the first flange so that such sides have an L-shaped cross section and the second flange on the fourth side being folded back substantially parallel to the first flange so that the fourth side has a Ushaped cross section, providing a mounting member of L-shaped cross section adapted to fit round said three sides of the trim ring with a first limb of the L-shape in abutment with the outwardly facing surface of the second flange of the trim ring, securing the second limb of the mounting member to the undersurface of the vehicle roof surrounding the opening so that the first limb of the mounting member provides a downwardly extending flange on the front and side edges of the opening, securing the drain tray of a sunshine roof assembly to the first limb of the mounting member, locating the rear edge of the opening within the recess of the U-shaped cross section of the fourth side of the trim ring and bringing the first flange of the trim ring into abutment with the top surface of the vehicle roof so that the second flange on said three sides of the mounting member projects downwardly with its outwardly facing surface in abutment with the first flange on the mounting member, and securing the second flange on the trim ring to the first flange on the mounting member.
If desired, the drain tray of the sliding roof assembly may be constructed with an upwardly extending flange which overlaps the second flange on the trim ring so that both the trim ring and the drain tray may be secured to the mounting member by one set of fixtures such as rivets.
A further form of the invention comprises a vehicle fitted with a sliding roof assembly in accordance with the foregoing method.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a car roof fitted with a sunshine roof assembly in accordance with the invention, Figure 2 is a perspective view from below of a trim ring for use in accordance with the invention, Figure 3 is a perspective view from below of a mounting member for use with the trim ring shown in Fig. 2, Figure 4 is a cross section on the line 4-4 in Fig. 1, and Figure 5 is a cross section on the line 5-5 in Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 1, a vehicle roof 10 has a rectangular opening which is arranged to be closed by a sliding panel 1 2 of a sunshine roof assembly incorporating a drain tray 14.
The panel 1 2 is mounted on tracks 1 6 which are secured to the drain tray 14.
Referring to Fig. 2, a trim ring 1 8 for use in installing a sliding roof assembly shown in Fig. 1 comprises a substantially rectangular frame, on each side of which is a laterally extending flange 20. Three sides 22, 24 and 26 have a second flange 28 extending perpendicular to the flange 1 2 from its inner edge so as to form an L-shaped cross section.
The fourth side 30 also has a second flange 32 attached to the inner edge of the first flange 20 but the flange 32 is turned back so as to form a U-shaped cross section.
Turning to Fig. 2, a mounting member 34 for use with the trim ring 1 8 is of generally similar shape to the first three sides of the trim ring 18, having a central portion 36 with two end portions 38 and 40, all of which are of L-shaped cross section having a first limb 42 adapted, in use, to provide a downwardly extending flange on the front and side edges of the opening in the vehicle roof, as will be explained hereinafter. The second limb 44 of the L-shaped cross section is provided with holes 46 for reception of fixing means to secure the mounting member to the vehicle roof.
Referring to Fig. 4, when the sunshine roof assembly is to be installed in the opening in the vehicle roof 10, the mounting member is first secured to the vehicle roof 10 adjacent to the front and side edges of the opening by nuts and bolts 48 which extend through the holes 46 (Fig. 3). The first limb 42 of the mounting member 34 thus provides a downwardly extending flange at the front and side edges of the opening. Next, a resilient sealing strip 50, moulded from a synthetic plastics material, is fitted over the heads of the bolts 48 so as to extend round the front and side edges of the opening above the mounting member 34.
The drain tray 1 4 of the sliding roof assembly is then fitted from below so that an upwardly extending flange 52 thereof abuts against the outwardly facing surface of the limb 42 of the mounting member 34. At the same time, the trim ring 1 8 is inserted into the opening so that the portion of U-shaped cross section, formed by the flange 32, embraces the vehicle roof 10 along the rear edge of the opening, together with a stiffening strip 54 which is located below the vehicle roof 1 0. The trim ring 1 8 is then pivoted downwards about the rear edge of the opening so as to bring the outer edge of the flange 20 into engagement with the sealing strip 50.A seal member 56 for engagement with the edge of the sliding panel 1 2 is fitted to the inwardly facing surface of the downwardly extending flange 28 of the trim ring 1 8 and the assembly comprising this sealing strip 56, the trim ring 18, the mounting member 34 and the flange 52 of the drain tray 14 are secured together by rivets 58.
Thus, it will be seen that, during installation, no distorting forces are applied to the exposed top surface of the trim ring 1 8 and there is nothing to obstruct pivoting movement thereof about the rear edge of the opening during installation.
