Description

SPECIFICATION A spool hub for magnetic tape reel holder or cassette suitable for making up the stand of the magnetic tape reel This invention relates to a spool hub for magnetic tape cassette which is suitable for making up the stand of the magnetic tape reel.
It is well-known that the magnetic tape cassettes are equipped with two cross holes through which the driving spindles of the tape-recorder are inserted. In coincidence with each one of said holes, a rotating hub or pulley is provided which is suitable for coupling with the driving spindle of the taperecorder, on which the magnetic tape held inside the cassette is wound and unwound.
The known spool hubs or pulleys consist of a substantially disk-shaped body which is centrally equipped with a hole fit for receiving the driving spindle of the tape-recorder and with internal radial projections which are suitable for engaging with corresponding external radial projections of the driving spindle of the tape-recorder, so that the hub can rotate jointly with it.
The magnetic tape ends are secured on the external outline of each one of the two hubs by means of a substantially fixed joint system which can be divided into two fundamental types.
A first manner of securing the magnetic tape end to the external outline of the hub provides the use of a tab which is fastened to the hub on one side and which is provided forcedly inserted into a corresponding recess on the external outline of the hub.
The magnetic tape end is placed inside the recess of the hub and the fastening of the tape is obtained by the forced insertion of the thickened part of the tab.
An other system for blocking the magnetic tape ends provides always a recess on the external outline of the hub, which is usually of a semi-circular shape, within which, previous to the insertion of the tape ends, a small segment having a complementary shape to that one of the recess is forcedly inserted and which is suitable for fastening the magnetic tape end.
Particularly when making use of the small fastening segment the securing of the tape to the spool hub presents several inconveniencies.
A first remarkable disadvantage is due to the fact that, in case of distortion of the hub's recess or breakage when inserting wrongly the blocking member, the hub becomes useless.
The inconvenience is particularly stressed when, in case of a circumscribed distortion caused during the assembling phase, this is emphasized in course of time by making use of the cassette and the tape cannot be fastened to the hub any more. Consequently, the cassette becomes useless if the hub, with great difficulty, is not replaced.
The distortions of the hub's recess can be caused also by molding defects of the hub itself and these defects increase the possibilities of distortions or brekages when the blocking member is applied.
In any case, both in manufacture and when making use of the cassette, the hub must be anyway replaced.
A further remarkable disadvantage of the traditional hubs is due to the fact that for fastening the magnetic tape ends, these latter must be always in a preordained position corresponding to the direction according to which the blocking member is applied, as for instance the small blocking segment. This is due to the fact that the production of cassettes and especially of the spool hubs is fully automatized and the device applying the blocking member to the hub operates always according to a constant direction to which the position of the hub must be exactly fitted.
It must be also pointed out that, for a proper positioning, some devices detecting its position are provided which are suitable for sensing the presence of the recess and which provide for orientating the hub so that this latter can face the device applying the blocking member.
it is obvious that, also when the cassettes manufacturing is manual, the operator must always pay particular attention to the fact that the recess is in its best conditions for applying the blocking member.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a spool hub or pulley for magnetic tape holder or cassette which is suitable for making up the stand of the magnetic tape reel which permits the elimination of all the aforementioned drawbacks.
According to this invention, the spool hub finds its best application, even if not limiting, where the magnetic tape is secured by inserting a small segment into a recess of the hub itself.
The present invention relates to a spool hub for magnetic tape cassette consisting of a substantially disk-shaped body, centrally equipped with a hole having internal radial projections which is suitable for receiving a driving spindle of the tape-recorder provided with corresponding external radial projections, wherein the hub is provided, on its outline, with a plurality of shaped recesses each one being suitable for receiving a blocking member of the magnetic tape end, and, particularly, small segment fit for being forcedly inserted into said recess.
A spool hub for magnetic tape cassette, according to this invention, will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is a plan view of a spool hub of known type; FIGURE2 is a plan view of a spool hub according to the present invention.
Referring to Fig. 1 the spool hub of known type consists of a substantially disk-shaped body indicated at 1 which is centrally provided with a hole 2 for receiving the driving spindle (not shown) of the tape-recorder. The hole 2 is equipped with radial internal projections 3 which are fit for engaging with corresponding projections (not shown) of the driving spindle of the tape-recorder.
The hub 1 is provided with a first circularwall 4 which is suitable for coupling with a corresponding circular wall of the internal face of the cassette having a smaller diameter in order to keep centred the hub during the rotations.
A second circular wall 5, which is concentric and external to the first circular wall 4, makes up the external rim of the hub 1 upon which ihe magnetic tape schematically indicated at 6 wil be svound.
The second wall 5 or rim of the hu w 1 is provided with a substantially semicircular recess 7 within which the magnetic tape 6 end 6a will be secured.
The fastening occurs by means of the forced inser tion of a small segment 8 into the recess 7 after hav ing inserted therein the magnetic tape 6 end 6a.
From the foregoing, it is obvious that if the wall 5 have deformations in coincidence with the recess 7, or it starts breaking, the forced insertion of the small segment 8 can cause its final breakage making the hub 1 useless since it is impossible to find an other fastening point for the tape 6 to the hub 1.
Known cross and radial reinforcing members of the hub 1 which are indicated at 9 and 10 respectively allow to carry out thin most of the hub's body 1 in order to make it as light as possible.
Referring now to Fig. 2 the spool hub according to this invention is described always indicated as 1 as a whole. The same elements of Fig. 1 are indicated with the same reference numbers as well and are not hereby described.
From Fig. 2 the external wall or rim 5 of the hub 1 is provided wit h a plurality of indentations, which are six in the pi e,erred embodiment shown in the drawing, > Nf wherein a seat or recess 7 is obtained, hav- ing an essentiallj serni-circular outline of the type of that one shown in Fig.
In Fig. 2 the magnetic tape 6 end 6a is applied by means olFthze small segment 8, usually made up of plastic material, in the upper seat 7 as shown in Fig.
1, but it is clearthattlle magneflotape end 6 could be applied in the same way in any other seat 7 of those provided on the hub.
From the foregoing it is obvious that the hub according to this invention presents the two follow ing fundamental advantages: 1 ) In case of breakage or deformation of the upper seat 7 wherein the magnetic tape end 6a is inserted it is possible to use any of the other seats 7 which are now empty.
2) Inspectioning the location of the hub in the 'machine for applying the blocking bar of the tape becomes unnecessary, since the blocking operation can be achieved by any of the six possible positions, each of them corresponding to one seat 7.
In particular as far as point 2 is concerned, it must be pointed out that the automatic machines for applying the blocking bar are preset for locating the hub with the seat 7 facing the device applying the bar. For this purpose, a sensor detecting the seat or recess becomes necessary, which at present time with the hub according to this invention is no more necessary.
It would be obvious that embodiment variations as well as modifications could be effected to the hub for magnetic tape cassette according to the invention without therefor exceeding from the protective scope of the present invention.
