Abstract

A solenoid operated stop valve with manual reset comprises a Main Stop Valve 7 having a partially balanced valve member 7 biassed to the closed position by inlet pressure acting in chamber D on a piston part 6 of the stop valve 7. Pressure to the piston is controlled by a Solenoid Valve 11 which can either pass inlet pressure to the piston 6 or vent the piston pressure through a first vent via seat 10. A fully balanced Reset Valve 1 having two seats 4, 5 and which is spring loaded on to its first seat 5 to seal a second vent F is arranged such that when the main valve 7 opens the reset valve 1 is tripped off its seat by the piston 6 to a mid seat position to vent the chamber D through the second vent. The main valve 7 will now remain open regardless of solenoid valve action. Reset to the main valve closed condition is effected by pulling the valve 1 onto its second seat 4 to close the second vent 7. <IMAGE>

Description

**WARNING** start of DESC field may overlap end of CLMS **.
SPECIFICATION Solenoid Operated Shut Off Valve with Manual Reset Valve The device relates to the field of Valves for the control of pressurised media. The device enables a flow of pressurised media to be initiated and maintained even in the event of the subsequent failure of the initiating signal. Closure can only be effected by manual operation of an integral reset valve in the absence of the initiating signal.
The invention comprises 3 basic units; a solenoid operated 3 way Pilot Valve; a partially balanced, soft seated, on-off Main Stage Valve and a fully balanced, spring biassed Reset Valve with manual reset over-ride handle. The function of the combined unit is to supply high pressure media to a device such as an anti- fire nozzle or spray. No flow will occur until the solenoid valve is energised by an electrical signal. After the opening of the main valve the unit will not close and stop the flow until manual operation of the reset valve. The unit will thus continue to control a fire even following destruction of its electrical system.
Description
Referring to Fig. 1 the inlet media operates on the main stage Piston Valve (7) by pressurising chambers A and B. The piston Valve (7) is balanced against pressure except for the area of the central spindle which biasses the Piston Valve (7) to the open condition. The piston item 6 is of larger area than the central spindle of item 7 and the intervening chamber C is vented to atmosphere. The pressurising of chamber D with high pressure media will thus overcome the opening force on Piston Valve (7) urging it to close upon the soft seat (8) preventing flow to the outlet.
Inlet high pressure media passes through the unenergised Solenoid Pilot Valve (11) as this is spring loaded open, into chamber D closing the Piston Valve (7) Operation of the Solenoid (9) closes the Pilot Valve (11) against Seat (12) venting chamber D through seat (10). This permits the Unbalanced Piston Valve (7) to fully open. At the end of its stroke piston valve (7) pushes Piston (6) onto the reset valve (1) causing it to open.
Reset Valve (1) is fully balanced against pressure in chamber D by the equal area balancing sleeve in pressurising chamber H which is coupled to chamber D by the drillway through the centre of the Reset Valve (1). The Spring (2) urges Reset Valve (1) into contact with Soft Seat (5) ensuring no leakage when Piston Valve (7) is closed. When Piston Valve (7) is fully open Piston (6) partially opens Reset Valve (1) venting camber D via chambers E and F. Hence once operated the main stage valve cannot be reset by any action of the Solenoid Valve (9), because pressure cannot build up in chamber D.
To reset the unit the handle of the reset valve (1) is pulled till the valve head of item 1 contacts the seating edge (4) which prevents flow passing through the chambers D, E, and F to vent. In this position the Solenoid (9) can be de-energised and thus close the main stage valve, after which the reset valve (1) may be released.
Claims 1. A stop valve having inlet and outlet ports separated by a resilient seat and a pressure sensitive main valve coupled to a first piston sliding within the body creating a first chamber with drillway communication to inlet pressure; a second larger piston in contact with the first piston creating a second chamber which when pressurised urges the main valve against its resilient seat preventing flow between inlet and outlet; a two position three port pilot valve, centre port communicating with the second chamber, a first vent port closed by a spring biased valve poppet and a port open communicating with inlet pressure, an electrical solenoid actuator which can override the spring biased poppet to close the pressure port and open the first vent port; ; a pressure balanced valve stem spring urged against a resilient seat in drillway communication with the second chamber, moveable by the second piston off the resilient seat to a point approaching a second seat in communication with a second vent, a manual handle on the valve stem by which the valve stem can be further moved against the spring bias to close the second vent port.
