Abstract

The upper end of the backrest is supported by a tubular bar (19) extending along the backrest to which the backrest is secured by resilient clips (18) and the ends of the bar are releasably supported in recesses (20) in the sides of the vehicle body. The front edge (23) of the parcel shelf (24) is supported on the bar (19) by three spaced apart brackets (25). The arrangement enables the backrest and parcel shelf to be swung forwardly as a whole by releasing the ends of the bar (19) from the recesses (20) and the parcel shelf can then be folded to lie against the back of the seat back or the rear seat back can be detached from the bar (19) and swung forwardly leaving the parcel shelf in situ as required. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Vehicle seat/parcel shelf arrangement This invention relates to a vehicle seat/parcel shelf arrangement.
The invention provides a vehicle seat/parcel shelf arrangement comprising seating means extending across the vehicle and having tiltable back rest or rests, a removable parcel shelf disposed behind the back rest, common support means for supporting the back rest in the normal upright position and also for supporting the forward end of the parcel shelf and means on either side of the vehicle structure for releasable mounting of the common support means to enable the seat/parcel shelf arrangement to be moved to an inoperative location when not required for use.
The following is a description of some specific embodiments of the invention, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figures 1 & 2 are diagrammatic side elevation views of a vehicle rear seat and parcel shelf arrangement according to the invention in two positions.
Figure 3 is a perspective part-cut-away view of part of the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 4 is a part-sectional view along the line 4 - 4 in Figure 3 but with the backrest in the in-use position.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of another part of the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of part of an alternative embodiment of the invention.
A rear seat and parcel shelf arrangement for a vehicle having an enable rear door or window comprises a mirror image pair of rear seat squabs 10 and corresponding backrests 11 providing a pair of rear seats in contiguous side-by-side relationship extending transversely of the vehicle and capable of being movable together or individually to out-of-use positions. The rear part of each seat squab 10 is supported on a seat pan 12 forming part of the vehicle structure, whilst the front part is supported by a pair of spaced-apart legs 13, the upper ends of which are rigidly secured to the underside of the squab and the lower ends pivotably connected to the vehicle floor by a pair of brackets 14 supporting for rotation of pin 15 which may, if required, be secured to the lower ends of the legs 13.An inverted U-shaped bracket 16 is secured to the underside of the seat squab and the upper ends of the legs 13 to support the top end of the front face of the corresponding backrest when the squab and backrest are in an out-of-use position.
The lower end of each backrest 11 is pivotably connected to a pair of brackets 17 which are attached to the rear wall of the seat pan panel 12 whilst a pair of spaced-apart resilient clips 18 are secured to the rear face of each backrest adjacent the top end thereof such that in-use, the backrest is supported by a transversely extending circular section tubular bar 19 over which the clips 18 are releasably engaged.
Each end of the bar 19 is supported in a recess 20 formed in respective right hand and left hand wheel arch panels 21, 22 at the top forward edge thereof and the bar additionally provides support for the front edge 23 of a rectangular rigid parcel shelf 24 which is pivotably connected to bar 19 by the eye piece ends of three spaced-apart brackets 25 located on the underside of the shelf and secured thereto by rivets or other suitable means.
As can be seen in Figure 3, the parcel shelf 24 extends substantially the width of the vehicle between the wheel arch panels and level with the tops thereof, each side edge of the shelf towards the rear end being supported by a bracket 26 attached to the respective wheel arch panels. A relatively movable flap portion 27 extends along the rear edge of the parcel shelf and is connected thereto by a suitable membrane hinge 28 which may be formed by joining together the undersides of the trim material which covers the shelf and flap. When the parcel shelf is in the in-use position, the flap 27 extends downwardly and rearwardly at an angle to the shelf to form a screen for any luggage placed below the shelf. In this position, the underside of each end of the flap is supported by a bracket 29 also attached to respective wheel arch panels.
When it is required to fully increase the luggage space, both seat squabs 10 are tilted forwardly about pivot bracket 14 to an upright position behind the front seats 30, the parcel shelf is lifted clear of the brackets 26, 29 and the backrests 11 are tilted forwardly carrying the bar 19 and shelf 24 with them until the backrests and shelf are in a substantially horizontal position with the front faces of the backrests supported by the seat pan 12 and bracket 16 and the parcel shelf 24 overlaying the rear faces of the backrests as shown in full line in Figure 2, the front edge of the shelf opposite the clips 18 being recessed if required to permit this. In this out-of-use position, the flap 27 at the rear of the parcel shelf covers the gap between the bottom edges of the backrest and the luggage floor of the vehicle.
Should it be desired to retain the parcel shelf in the in-use position as shown in chain-dotted line in Figure 2 and in full line in Figure 3, one or both seat squabs 10 are first tilted forwardly as previously described and the clips 18 on the corresponding backrests are disengaged from the bar 19 before tilting the backrests forwardly.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention as shown in Figure 6, the rear seat squab 31 and backrest (not shown) each comprise a single unit extending transversely of the vehicle. Only one supporting leg 13 is required at each end of the squab and this is pivotably connected to the outer of the brackets 14 by a short pin 32 secured to the lower end of each support leg 13 - the inner brackets 14 being omitted. Means for supporting the top front face of the backrest in the out-of-use position may comprise an inverted L-shaped bracket 33 secured to the underside of the seat squab and the top of each support leg 13 such that one limb of the brackets 32 extend inwardly towards each other as shown in Figure 6. The number and spacing of the resilient clips may of course be changed to suit this alternative embodiment.
Various modifications may be made to the embodiments described hereinbefore without departing from the scope of the claims of the invention. For example, suitable releasable latching means may be provided to latch the backrest(s) to bar 19 and further latching means to latch the ends of bar 19 to the vehicle structure may also be provided. It may also be desired to increase the leggage space and retain the rear seats in-use. Accordingly, the length of the parcel shelf between the front edge 23 and hinge 28 may be such as to permit the parcel shelf to be lifted clear of brackets 26, 29 and the backrests tilted slightly forwardly without disengaging the clips 18 from bar 19 and the parcel shelf swung down against the rear of the backrests which is then returned to the in-use position with the ends of the bar 19 engaged into recesses 20. The flap 27 will of course be folded rearwardly to lie flat against the luggage floor of the vehicle. Further modifications may comprise asymmetrical division of the rear seat squabs and corresponding backrests and deletion of the flap 27 and brackets 29. In the latter case and where the rear door or window is hinged at its upper edge, link means between the rear of the parcel shelf and the rear door or window may be provided to lift the rear of the parcel shelf a certain distance when the rear door or window is swung open.
