Automatic speed or power control; hydraulic transmission.-Comprises means for braking the rotating shafts of internal-combustion engines which may serve either to limit the speed of rotation or, in cases of emergency, to lock the shaft against rotation. The invention is intended for limiting the speed of motor-cars, trains, &c. The device comprises a pump located in a casing 1 fixed to the vehicle, the gears 2, 3 of which are adapted, when rotated by the shaft 4 to which the gear 3 is rigidly ,attached, to circulate liquid from an inlet 6 through the casing 1 to an outlet 5, whence it is returned through the chamber 11, port 14 and chamber 12 to the inlet. The outlet 5 normally registers with a port 8 in a spring- controlled valve 7, and the port 14 may be restricted by a screw-threaded member 16, the position of which may be adjusted by means of a handle 17. Normally the pump circulates liquid freely through the system, but when a certain speed is attained, dependent on the extent to which the port 14 is restricted, the circulation of liquid becomes checked, and it tends to accumulate in the casing 1 and the chamber 11, when the fluid friction tends to check the speed of rotation of the shaft 4. Further increase of speed results in the raising of the valve 7 by the pressure developed in the chamber 11, whereby the ports 5, 8 are thrown out of register and the pressure of liquid in the casing 1 increases rapidly and the fluid-friction decreases the speed of the shaft until the valve 7 drops into its normal position. The valve 7 may be connected through a bell-crank lever 33 with pull rods 38, 40, leading respectively to the valve 55 in the fuel-supply pipe 39, Fig. 7, and to the brake lever 41, so that the raising of the valve may partially cut off the fuel supply, and the driver may operate the valve to check the speed of the shaft, or lock it against rotation. Provision may also be made for electric or pneumatic control of the valve. To enable traffic authorities to limit the speed of motor-vehicles fitted with the device, the member 16 may be locked in position by means of a screw 21 engaging the handle 17 and provided with an arm 24, so that sealing-means may be attached to openings 25, 26 in the members 16, 24 respectively.
