Description

SPECIFICATION A Fuel Injection Nozzle for an Internal Combustion Engine The present invention relates to a fuel injection nozzle for an internal combustion engine.
A known fuel injection nozzle has an outwardly opening valve needle which is guided in an interior bore in a nozzle body which is lengthened in a shank-like manner. A compression spring is disposed around a shank-like portion of the nozzle body and abuts at one end against a shoulder of the nozzle body and at the other end against a spring abutment plate which is connected to the valve needle.
In a fuel injection nozzle of this kind, the valve needle is guided in the nozzle body at the end thereof which is remote from the spring abutment plate and at least at a second point which is located downstream of the shank-like portion. In order to keep the contact surface and thus the guide surface as small as possible an annular groove is disposed in the valve needle between the guide points. The type of guidance renders it necessary to machine the bore in the nozzle body from both ends for the purpose of producing the guide surfaces. Machining from both ends in this manner involves the risk that the ends of the bore will not be absolute alignment with one another after the machining operation. A further disadvantage is the high cost resulting from the unclamping and rechucking of the nozzle body to be machined. In order to minimise the length of the interior bore to be machined, the shank portion in this known nozzle is shortened and a tubular portion is correspondingly disposed on the spring abutment plate to co-operate with that end of the shank portion which is located at the front end in order to act as a stop for limiting the opening stroke. However, the mass acting upon the valve needle at the stroke stop is thereby disadvantageously enlarged.
According to the present invention there is provided a fuel injection nozzle for an internal combustion engine, comprising an outwardly opening valve needle which is guided in an interior bore in a nozzle body which is lengthened in shank-like manner, and a compression spring which is disposed around a shank-like portion of the nozzle body and which abuts at one end against a shoulder of the nozzle body and at the other end against a spring abutment plate which is connected to the valve needle, and that end of the shank portion which faces the spring abutment plate serves as a stop for the latter for the purpose of limiting the opening stroke, wherein the internal diameter of the main part of the shank portion adjacent the spring abutment plate is larger than the external diameter of the valve needle, and the interior bore of the nozzle body is machined only from the injection orifice end, and the spring abutment plate is only of disc like construction in order to reduce the mass.
In contrast to the prior art, the fuel injection nozzle in accordance with the invention has the advantage that the movable mass of the injection nozzle which acts upon the needle is reduced to a minimum, and the guide required for the valve needle is shortened such that it is sufficient to machine the central bore in the nozzle body from one end. Theoretically, the non-machined portion of the shank of the nozzle body or the valve needle can thereby be lengthened by several times its normal length without additional machining.
The present invention will now be described further, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a fuel injection nozzle in accordance with the invention.
In order to show the proportions to better advantage, a portion of the drawing is shown in section and a portion in the form of an external view. A shank-like nozzle body 1 is clamped to a nozzle holder 3 by a cap nut 2. The cap nut 2 and the nozzle holder 3 are only partially illustrated and shown by dash-dot lines. An outwardly opening valve needle 5 operates in a central bore 4 in the nozzle body 1 and its injection end has a head 6 which co-operates with a valve seat 7 disposed on the nozzle body 1.The needle head 6 is urged against the valve seat 7 by a closure spring 8 which abuts at one end against a spring abutment plate 10 by way of a washer 9 which at the same time serves to adjust/limit the stroke, and at the other end against a shoulder 13 of the nozzle body 1 by way of one or two washers 11 which serve to set the force at which the nozzle opens. The spring abutment plate 10 has a keyhole-shaped opening 13 which is only partially illustrated and into which that end of the valve needle 5 which is remote from the injection end is inserted by way of an annular groove 14.As soon as the fuel which is fed, and which flows around the entire valve assembly, has reached an adequately high pressure, the valve needle 5 is displaced against the force of the spring 8, so that the needle head 6 is raised from the valve seat 7 and fuel is fed through a pressure passage 1 5 and is injected past the valve seat 7.
The nozzle body 1 has a shank-like portion 1 6 that is to say, the portion which commences at the shoulder 12 and around which the spring 8 is disposed. A substantial portion 1 7 of the interior bore 4 in the shank-like portion 1 6 has a larger diameter, so that the valve needle 5 and the surface of the wall of the interior bore are not in contact with one another at this location. Thus, this portion does not have to be machined for a guide. The rest of the portion of the interior bore 4 is correspondingly precision machined. However, here also, in order to reduce the mutually contacting surfaces of the interior bore and the valve needle to a minimum, annular grooves 18 and 1 9 are provided in the outer surface of the valve needle 5 and in this guide region. While the annular groove 1 8 serves only to reduce the areas of contact, the annular groove 19 serves to conduct fuel, for which purpose the pressure passage 1 5 opens directly into the annular groove 19.
In order to reduce to a minimum movable mass of the injection nozzle which acts upon the needle, the mass of the washer 9 is reduced to a minimum and the spring abutment plate 10 is also only of disc-like construction. A disc-like construction of this kind is also particularly advantageous when the spring abutment plate and the ring serve as part of an inductive sensor.
