Abstract
A conversion process employing a solid acid catalyst, preferably a polyfluorosulfonic acid catalyst, in which a first organic compound reactant reacts with a second organic compound reactant to produce a desired first product which tends to react with the second reactant to produce an undesired second product, comprises the steps of (i) vaporizing the first reactant 16 in a reflux zone 10, (ii) passing vaporized first reactant 11 through a catalyst zone 12 to a condenser wherein vaporized first reactant is condensed, (iii) returning condensed first reactant to the catalyst zone and in the catalyst zone contacting condensed first reactant with vaporized first reactant and the second reactant, (iv) passing reaction products and unreacted condensed first reactant 18 to the reflux zone, and (5) recovering the desired first reactant 17. Optionally, uncondensed second reactant 14 leaving catalyst/condensor zone 12 may be recycled 19 to the supply line 13 for that reactant. The conversion process may be alkylation of organic compounds or oxyalkylation of hydroxyl compounds. <IMAGE>
