Description
SPECIFICATION
Multi/omni directional fettling apparatus
This invention relates to a multi/omni directional fettling apparatus of a kind employed to eject refractory material as part of a repair process for hot refractory linings of furnaces, ladles, etc.
Known apparatus for this purpose comprises basically a hopper to contain the refractory material, a feed auger located at a lower, discharge end of the hopper, the auger serving to feed refractory material via one or more apertures, to a rotary plate adapted to throw the refractory material, by centrifugal action, to the lining area where repair is required. It will be appreciated that not all circumstances demand repair over 360 and accordingly it has been proposed to make provision for closing selected ones of the e.g. six apertures, spaced at regular intervals above the rotary plate, with the aperture(s) closed over an area that does not require repair and opened for an area that does require repair. To control the amount of refractory material discharged through a particular aperture, the latter have been provided with control gates to provide a selected extent of opening dependent upon the magnitude of the repair required. However, the means for effecting such adjustment has included screws, cams, pegs, pins and the like which have proved awkward and time consuming to operate. For instance, screw arrangements are adversely affected by heat and usually need penetrating oil to secure their release. Furthermore, releasing tools are required, e.g. spanners.
According to the present invention, a multi/omni directional fettling apparatus for the hot repair of refractory linings comprises a hopper adapted to contain refractory material, and having an open, lower, discharge end through which refractory material is fed via one or more apertures to a rotary plate located beneath the discharge end, each aperture having a control gate displaceable between a closed position and at least one open position, each gate being spring loaded into a selected position and releasable by hand against the spring loading when adjustment to a new position is required.
Thus, with the spinner unit in accordance with the present invention, the operator effects adjustment of a gate position simply by pushing the gate against the spring loading, displacing the gate to the required new position, and releasing the gate, which enables adjustment to be made by hand in seconds.
Furthermore, the gate is not effected by hot temperature conditions or temperature changes, while no spanners, etc., are required for adjustment, neither is there any need for penetrating oils and the like to release screw threads affected by the heat. If, as is readily possible, a plurality of open positions for each gate is provided, then the quantity of refractory material being discharged through each gate may be controlled.
Preferably, each gate is provided with a handle to be gripped by the operator when adjustment is required.
Preferably, six gates are provided while each preferably having an individual spring. It is desirable of course for the material of the springs to be heat resistant. Conveniently, each gate has a number of spaced apart slots, cut horizontally, across an outside face, each slot, depending on the setting, mating with a fixed position locating plate to define the predetermined gate position. The gate position selected must of course correspond to a position where a slot in the gate face will interlock with the locating plate.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional view through the lower end of a multi/omni directional fettling apparatus in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the lower end of the apparatus of Fig. 1.
The multi/omni directional fettling apparatus is indicated generally by the reference numeral 1 and comprises a hopper 2 adapted to contain granular refractory material for the repair of hot refractory linings, ladles etc., the material being introduced into the hopper in a known manner by splitting bags of the material on a cutter (not shown) located at an upper end of the hopper 2 remote from a fruasto-conical lower end 3 to assist in discharge of the refractory material as the level of the latter falls. The hopper is also provided with a rotary plate 4 located beneath the lower, open, discharge end of the hopper, to project refractory material laterally, under centrifugal action, to the zone of the lining to be repaired. The rotary plate 4 is carried at one end of a drive shaft 5 which passes into a jacket 6 contained within the hopper 2 and supported on a pair of transverse beams 7.
The jacket houses a drive motor (not shown) to rotate the shaft 5. Externally of the hopper is a water supply pipe 8 to supply water to a manifold 9 to introduce water via apertures 10 to refractory material in the zone 11, where a plurality of rotary mixing blades 1 2 are located. Beneath the zone 11 the hopper 1 has a tubular throat portion 1 3 containing rotary scraper blades 1 4. The refractory material water mix is fed to a zone 1 5 having a wall 1 6 with a plurality of apertures 1 7 each having a control gate 1 8 displaceable between a closed position 1 8A and an open position 1 8B, each gate 1 8 being loaded by a spring 1 9 into a selected position and each gate 1 8 having an operating handle 20. Each gate 1 8 has two spaced apart slots 21 to mate with a fixed position locating plate 22.
