Abstract

A device for securing a catheter to the surface of a human body has a part-cylindrical member (1) supported on the surface by three resilient angled limbs (4, 5, 6) with its axis vertical. The supporting limbs (4, 5, 6) are angularly spaced about the member over an angle of less than 180 DEG to allow easy access to a catheter secured to the member (1) conveniently by surgical thread threaded through holes (2). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A device for securing a catheter or the like The invention relates to a device for securing a catheter or the like on the surface of a human body.
It is known to secure a catheter on a body surface by means of a plate such that the plate rests on the body surface and is held fast by, for example, strips of plaster or the like. It is not possible steriiely to provide the catheter outlet opening with a bandage without tension and the necessary frequent changing of the bandage becomes more difficult each time. During the change, the catheter is often displaced from its optimum position and sometimes damaged.
The invention seeks to provide a device for fixing catheters or the like which leaves the catheter outlet opening freely accessible.
Accordingly the present invention provides a device for securing a catheter or the like on the surface of a human body comprising means securable to said catheter for supporting said catheter and support means connectible to the body for supporting said securing means in spaced relationship to said body.
Using a device according to the present invention compressive or tensile stresses on the catheter outlet opening on the body surface are reduced and the device can easily be removed or exchanged.
Preferably, the supporting device comprises a plurality of angled support limbs whose feet extend substantially parallel to the body surface. The securing means and the support means are made of synthetic material. At least the support means is made of resilient material.
The securing means has a part-cylindrical surface which extends preferably vertically to the body surface and is preferably provided with holes or the like for receiving fastening means for the catheter or the like.
In a preferred embodiment, three support limbs are provided, being angularly spaced but assymmet- rically distributed about the securing means. The three support limbs are angularly spaced over an angle of less than 180 .
The present invention is further described hereinafter by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the embodiment of Fig. 1.
A curved plate 1 is provided, for example, with four holes 2 and has a reinforcing rib 3 which is attached to or integral with the outer surface of the plate.
In the illustrated embodiment three supports 4, 5, 6 extend angularly from the rib 3 and have respective feet 7, 8, 9 which, when the device is used on the body of a human being, are fastened, for example, by plaster.
As can be seen from Fig. 2, the supports 4, 5, 6 extend generally radially from the plate 1 and are located at angular positions such that they occupy an angle of less than 180 leaving an obtuse angle in the horizontal plane as seen in Fig. 2 free from supports. This provides easy access to the catheter outlet opening from the free side of the plate 1. In addition, since the plate 1 is maintained a distance from the body surface by the supports 4, 5, 6 and the supports also have a certain flexibility, conveniently being made of a resilient material, the catheter outlet opening is accessible allround.
In use the plate 1 is first arranged, i.e. placed such that the concave side of the plate remains accessible in the most easy way. Then the supporting feet 7 to 9 are stuck on the body surface for example by strips of plaster and the catheter is attached to the plate 1.
For this purpose, for example surgical sewing thread (3 x 0 silk) is wrapped around the catheter. The two free thread ends are passed through the holes 2 and are knotted at least twice on the rear side of the plate 1.
Since the supporting device as a result of the nature of its material is slightly resilient, a semielastic fixing of the catheter is achieved. It is also possible to protect the catheter outlet opening by a bandage which can be exchanged without the necessity of removing the device for fixing the catheter. The catheter outlet opening at the body surface is not exposed to any compressive or tensile stress; it is freely accessible from all sides and can without any difficulty be removed.
The device according to the present invention can in principle be used in all those cases where a relatively level body surface is available. The main fields of application are, for example, the fixing of suprapubic bladder catheters, nephrostomy catheters, pleuradrainages, central vein catheters, and oro- or nasotracheal tubes, particularly used for the artificial respiration of premature infants and babies.
One can use as material for manufacturing the device, for example, a flexible synthetic material commonly used for medical dispensable apparatus which fulfils the requirements of hygiene and safety.
