Abstract
A blind fastener has a thin metal barrel 16 and a plastics plug 18. The plug is deformed when pushed into the barrel accommodated in a hole in a workpiece W, W1, and expands the barrel at the blind side by recovery from deformation. It also expands beyond the end of the barrel to further resist withdrawal. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Blind Fasteners
This invention is concerned with a blind fastener comprising a tubular metal body with a head flange at one end of an annular barrel wall of uniform thickness over at least most if its length and a plug which can be forced into the body after the body has been introduced into a hole in a workpiece to cause the body to be expanded radially at its tail end and thereby prevent removal of the body from the hole.
Many kinds of fasteners are available for joining together two or more plates of a workpiece with aligned holes in them under circumstances where there is convenient access to only one side of the workpiece, each kind of fastener having its own particular advantages and disadvantages. The merit of the fastener of the present invention lies in its ability to seal the hole through the workpiece and provide a secure joint with a shear strength which is high for the relatively low installed cost of the fastener.
The advantages of the invention are thus achieved by providing that the plug is made of thermoplastic polymeric material of high compressive strength and high modulus of elasticity, the plug having a cylindrical portion of slightly larger diameter than the internal bore of said barrel wall so that said portion is deformed when it is forced through part of the barrel wall confined by the wall of the hold in the workpiece in which the body is being set, and the barrel wall of the body being thin enough to be expanded radially by the plug when unrestrained by the wall of said hole, recovery from deformation of a leading end portion of said cylindrical portion of the plug after passing through the part of the body so restrained serving to resist withdrawal of the plug.
The tubular metal body of a fastener in accordance with the invention preferably has an annular wall which is continuous (rather then one with a longitudinal slot in it) and may conveniently be provided by a conventional eyelet formed from aluminium or aluminium alloy sheet, in which case its barrel wall, while being of uniform thickness, may taper slightly towards the tail end where there is a small inwardly turned lip.
In such a case, the diameter of the plug will be slightly greater than the largest diameter of the barrel wall. The barrel wall preferably flares outwardly to provide a bell-mouth at the head flange end.
Preferably, the plug is of sufficiently reduced diameter for a short distance at one end for it to be tightly received in the head flange end of the body to provide an assemblage which can be handied as a unit until the plug is driven home.
Driving of the plug into the tubular body of the fastener after the barrel has been inserted in a hole in a workpiece can conveniently be effected by a series of blows from a power-operated repetitive hammering tool.
Where the barrel wall of a fastener in accordance with the invention is continuous and the metal body is non-ferrous or stainless steel, the fastener provides a good non-corrosive seal in plates of similar material The body may be anodized and coloured, and the plug material may also be distinctively coloured, so that the fastener can be used for decorative or other purposes where distinctive colouring is a desirable feature.
The plug material of a fastener in accordance with the invention is a thermoplastic polymeric material, of which nylon 66 is a suitable example.
Nylon 66 can be moulded to give individual plugs of compressive strength in the range of 45 to 1 15
MN/m2 and modulus of elasticity in the range of 1000 to 3000 MN/m2, such plugs being useful for bodies of soft aluminium. Other polymeric materials may, however, be used to provide plugs of similar strength and elasticity.
A fastener in accordance with the invention, selected to illustrate, the invention by way of example and not of limitation, is shown in the accompanying drawing, of which
Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section showing the illustrative fastener with its body and plug in assembled relationship; and
Figure 2 shows the illustrative fastener after the body barrel has been inserted in a hole in the workpiece and the plug driven fully into it.
The illustrative fastener shown in Figure 1 comprises a tubular body 10 formed from soft aluminium sheet to provide a slightly tapering barrel 1 2 of uniform wall thickness and an inturned lip 14 at a tail end, and an outwardly directed head flange 1 6 and the other end. The fastener also comprises cylindrical plug 18 of uniform diameter except for a portion 20 of reduced diameter for a short distance at one end; an annular shoulder 22 separates the portion 20 from the larger diameter portion of the plug. The plug 1 8 is shown in Figure 1 assembled with the body 10 by having been pushed into it, reduced diameter portion 20 first, far enough for the body and plug to remain in such assembled relationship during handling of the fastener before setting.
In use, the illustrative fastener may be inserted, barrel first, into an aligned hole in a workpiece comprising, for example, two plates W, W', until the head flange 1 6 abuts the workpiece W at one side; the plug 1 8 is then pushed fully home into the body by repetitive blows by any suitable means, e.g. a hammer, until its exposed end lies flush with the head flange 1 6. When so pushed into the body, the plug material (of the larger diameter portion of the piug) expands the barrel of the body to fill the holes in the workpiece and then yields elastically to allow the plug to pass into that part of the barrel which is restrained from further expansion by the surrounding plates.
When the plug emerges from the remote side of the workpiece, the larger diameter portion of the plug recovers to an extent sufficient first to radially expand the projecting tail end portion of the barrel and then, on emerging from the barrel, to itself radially overlap the end of the barrel.
Thus, the barrel is set at its tail end by radial expansion beyond the wall of the hole in the plate
W', to secure the plates together, and the plug by its overlapping the tail end of the barrel is restrained from withdrawal. At the same time, the exposed end of the plug has been driven flush with the head flange 14, an uncompressed end portion of the plug being accommodated in the n,outh of the flange and restraining the plug from being pushed further through the body.
The metal body of the illustrative fastener is a conventional eyelet formed from 0.018 inch (0.46 mm) thick soft aluminium sheet, the maximum external diameter under the head flange of the eyelet being 0.263 inch (6.68 mm) and the minimum at the tail end being 0.255 inch (6.48
mm). The head flange is 0.450 inch (11.4 mm) diameter and the overall length 0.290 inch (7.35
mm), the barrel below the head flange being
0.260 inch (6.6 mm) long. The nylon 66 plug has
a diameter of 0.249 inch (6.13 mm) reduced to
0.225 inch (5.77 mm) for an axial distance of
0.100 inch (2.54 mm) at one end, the overall
length of the plug being 0.440 inch (11.2 mm).
The compressive strength of the plug is 48.4- 110.5 MN/m2 and the modulus of elasticity 1790-2760 MN/m2.
