Abstract
An apertured upright (1) for an adjustable shelving or display system in which the apertures (2) to receive and locate the shelving support brackets may be covered by a decorative cover strip (8) received in a channel (7) provided on the front face of the upright immediately adjacent the apertures by an inwardly directed lip (6). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Adjustable shelving or display system
This invention relates to an apertured upright or support member for an adjustable shelving or display system for attachment to a support surface, usually a wall, to which shelving supports may be mounted by removably fitting them in the apertures.
Such support members are well known but a disadvantage thereof is that when they are screwed or otherwise attached to the supporting surface, they present a generally unpleasing appearance because the apertures spaced regularly along their length are always on display.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to overcome this disadvantage by providing means whereby the apertures in the support member may be covered by a cladding when in position on the wall or other surface to which the shelving or display system is to be mounted.
According to the invention there is provided an apertured support member for an adjustable shelving or display system, the upright being provided with means to receive a removable cladding to cover said apertures.
Conveniently, the upright comprises a pair of side walls integrally connected by a bridging part to provide a generally H-shaped cross-section. The apertures to receive the shelving supports are provided in the bridging part and extend along the whole length thereof at regular spaced intervals in known manner. Holes through which screws may be inserted to attach the upright to a support surface are also provided on the bridging part along the length thereof. Preferably the side walls are flat and parallel to each other but this is not essential. In a preferred embodiment, the cladding receiving means comprises an inwardly directed lip extending from one edge of each side wall to provide a narrow channel immediately adjacent the shelf support receiving apertures into which a flexible decorative strip may be inserted to cover said apertures.Conveniently the decorative strip is made of a synthetic plastics material but other suitable materials could be used for instance metal, cardboard, plastic coated paper etc. The decorative strip may be of indeterminate length so that it can be cut to size to fit exactly between the shelving supports mounted in the upright. Alternatively, the strip may be supplied as a pre-selected length dependent on the most common spacings likeiy to be required between the shelf supports when inserted in the uprights.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figure lisa cross-section through a support member of the invention for a shelving or display system; and
Figure 2 is a plan view of the support member of
Figure 1 but showing a cladding strip ready for insertion therein.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown an upright or support member for an adjustable shelving or display system which includes a plurality of identically shaped apertures 2 spaced at regular intervals along its length, these apertures being shaped to receive the locating tongues of shelving supports (not shown) in known manner. Screw holes 3 are also provided at regular intervals along the length of the upright, for instance between groups of six apertures 2, so that the upright may be attached to a support surface 11. The apertures 2 may be of any suitable configuration dependent on the shelf supports to be fitted therein so they will not be described further as they do not form part of the invention.
As can be seen more clearly from Figure 1, the upright comprises a pair of parallel spaced side walls 4 integrally connected by a bridging part 5 to provide an elongate member of indeterminate length which is generally H-shaped in cross-section. As can be seen from Figure 1, the bridging part 5 connecting the side walls 4 is disposed nearer one edge of the side walls 4for reasons which will be explained hereafter. An inwardly directed projection 10 extends from the other edge of each side wall to provide a foot for the upright to rest on when it is mounted on the wall 11 by means of screws 12.
Inwardly facing lips 6 extend from the edge of each side wall 4 immediately adjacent the bridging part 5 to provide a narrow slot or channel 7 into which a flexible decorative strip 8 may be fitted to cover up the apertures 2 left visible when the shelving system is fully assembled. As can be seen from
Figure 1, the lips 6 are spaced from the bridging part by a distance substantially the same as the thickness of the strip 8 so that the strip is a tight fit therein.
An advantage of the illustrated arrangement is that by providing the channel 7 in the upright itself, no clips or other means of attaching the strip 8 are needed so the assembly is simple to use and cheap and easy to manufacture.
1. An apertured support memberforan adjustable shelving or display system provided with cladding receiving means to receive a removable cladding member to cover said apertures.
2. A support member as claimed in claim 1 comprising a pair of side walls integrally connected by a bridging part to provide a generally H-shaped cross section, the apertures to receive the shelving support brackets being provided in said bridging part.
3. A support member as claimed in claim 2 wherein the cladding receiving means comprises an inwardly. directed lip extending from one edge of each side wall to provide a narrow channel immediately adjacent the shelf bracket receiving apertures adapted to receive and retain the cladding member therein.
4. A support member as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3 wherein the cladding member comprises a flexible strip.
