Abstract

A vandal and weather-resistant top course arrangement for a wall is provided by placing upon the final course of a standard wall (2) a further course of shaped building components (6) each component having a ridge (8, 18) provided on a surface thereof remote from the main portion of the wall, the ridges (8, 18) of each component lying adjacent or in alignment with that of its neighbouring components to provide a centrally disposed continuous rib upstanding along the length of the wall, and placing over the course of shaped components a row of second shaped components (10) having a groove or recess (12) in a lower surface thereof to receive said continuous rib. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improved forms of coping blocks for use in forming the top courses of a masonry wall The invention relates to building components.
In particular, the invention is concerned with improved forms of coping blocks for use in forming the top courses of a masonry wall.
In the assembly of, for example, bricks in the construction of a brick wall, it is necessary to minimise the seepage of water through the gaps between the bricks, which gaps are normally filled or substantially filled with mortar. To prevent this seepage, a course of coping elements may be laid as the top course of the wall, often together with an impermeable membrane known as a dampproof course. These coping elements may comprise standard bricks laid transversely on the wall or special bricks having a round or sioping profile the better to allow run-off of water.
However, seepage can occur between the coping bricks and through or round the damp proof course, particularly in the case of a cavity wall, causing numerous problems attributable to dampness.
Moreover, a coping course is normally fairly easy to dislodge, either through the effects of weathering on mortar present or through vandalism. The result will be, in addition, unsightly and may, if the wall is a high one, present danger from falling bricks.
The present invention therefore provides a method of forming a top course arrangement of building components in a wall or similar assembly comprising constructing a main portion of the wall in any suitable manner, placing upon the final course of the main portion of the wall a further course of shaped building components each component having a ridge provided on a surface thereof remote from the main portion of the wall, the ridges of each component lying adjacent or in alignment with that of its neighbouring components to provide a centrally disposed continuous rib upstanding along the length of the wall, and placing over the course of shaped components a row of second shaped components having a groove or recess in a lower surface thereof to receive said continuous rib.
In an example of the invention, the first shaped components may be substantially L-shaped, two such components being placed side-by side so that upstanding end portions lay adjacent one another to provide a centrally disposed rib.
Alternatively, a single first component may be provided which will span the width of the wall and has a lengthwise extending central rib.
Advantageously flexible damp-proof material may be inserted between the first and second shaped building components. Additional dampproof material may be provided as circumstances dictate.
There will now be described in detail two examples of the invention. It will be understood that the description, which is to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, is given by way of example only and not by way of limitation.
In the drawings: - Figure 1 is an exploded, perspective view of a first example of coping courses of a brick wall; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the wall shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of a second example of coping courses.
Figure 1 shows a wall having a main portion comprising standard bricks 2 arranged to provide a cavity 4 between an outer and an inner leaf of the wall.
Arranged so as to span the cavity 4 are two shaped components 6 comprising an L-shaped brick of larger than standard overall dimensions. In the present example, the longitudinal dimension of each component 6 is the same as the length of a standard brick.
Each component 6 is formed with a ridge 8 running longitudinally thereof with respect to the wall. The components are laid so that the ridges on two adjacent components form a lengthwise extending centrally disposed rut in the uppermost surface. A flexible damp-proof sheet material 9 (Figure 2) is laid over this course of components 6.
A course of second shaped components 10 is then placed on top of the components 6. These components 10, which span the width of the width of the wall, are provided with a groove 12 formed in the underside thereof and are laid with their grooves 12 facing downwardly to enclose the rib formed by the ridges of the bricks 6. However, the cross-sectionai profile of the components 10 may be varied from rectangular, if desired, for example, to have sloping or curved surfaces as shown in broken lines at 1 0' and 10" respectively.
Figure 3 shows a second example of an arrangement of coping courses according to the invention. The arrangement is similar to that of Figures 1 and 2 except that the pairs of shaped components 6 are replaced by a single component 1 6 having a lengthwise extending centrally disposed ridge or rib 18. A damp-proof layer (not shown) will be positioned as before, prior to the placing of the second shaped components 10.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention, for example, various decorative finishes may be applied to the components comprising the courses. These finishes may if desired disguise the shaped components giving them an external appearance comparable to conventional bricks.

SPECIFICATION Improved forms of coping blocks for use in forming the top courses of a masonry wall The invention relates to building components. In particular, the invention is concerned with improved forms of coping blocks for use in forming the top courses of a masonry wall. In the assembly of, for example, bricks in the construction of a brick wall, it is necessary to minimise the seepage of water through the gaps between the bricks, which gaps are normally filled or substantially filled with mortar. To prevent this seepage, a course of coping elements may be laid as the top course of the wall, often together with an impermeable membrane known as a dampproof course. These coping elements may comprise standard bricks laid transversely on the wall or special bricks having a round or sioping profile the better to allow run-off of water. However, seepage can occur between the coping bricks and through or round the damp proof course, particularly in the case of a cavity wall, causing numerous problems attributable to dampness. In an example of the invention, the first shaped components may be substantially L-shaped, two such components being placed side-by side so that upstanding end portions lay adjacent one another to provide a centrally disposed rib. Alternatively, a single first component may be provided which will span the width of the wall and has a lengthwise extending central rib. Arranged so as to span the cavity 4 are two shaped components 6 comprising an L-shaped brick of larger than standard overall dimensions. In the present example, the longitudinal dimension of each component 6 is the same as the length of a standard brick. Each component 6 is formed with a ridge 8 running longitudinally thereof with respect to the wall. The components are laid so that the ridges on two adjacent components form a lengthwise extending centrally disposed rut in the uppermost surface. A flexible damp-proof sheet material 9 (Figure 2) is laid over this course of components 6. A course of second shaped components 10 is then placed on top of the components 6. These components 10, which span the width of the width of the wall, are provided with a groove 12 formed in the underside thereof and are laid with their grooves 12 facing downwardly to enclose the rib formed by the ridges of the bricks 6. However, the cross-sectionai profile of the components 10 may be varied from rectangular, if desired, for example, to have sloping or curved surfaces as shown in broken lines at 1 0' and 10" respectively. Figure 3 shows a second example of an arrangement of coping courses according to the invention. The arrangement is similar to that of Figures 1 and 2 except that the pairs of shaped components 6 are replaced by a single component 1 6 having a lengthwise extending centrally disposed ridge or rib 18. A damp-proof layer (not shown) will be positioned as before, prior to the placing of the second shaped components 10. Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention, for example, various decorative finishes may be applied to the components comprising the courses. These finishes may if desired disguise the shaped components giving them an external appearance comparable to conventional bricks. CLAIMS
1. A method of forming a top course arrangement of building components in a wall or similar assembly comprising constructing a main portion of the wall in any suitable manner, placing upon the final course of the main portion of the wail a further course of shaped building components each component having a ridge provided on a surface thereof remote from the main portion of the wall, the ridges of each component lying adjacent or in alignment with that of its neighbouring component(s) to provide a centrally disposed continuous rib upstanding along the length of the wall, and placing over the course of shaped components a row of second shaped components having a groove or recess in a lower surface thereof to receive said continuous rib.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first shaped components are substantially Lshaped in cross-section and are arranged in sideby-side pairs so that upstanding end portions thereof form a ridge and lie adjacent one another to provide said centrally disposed continuous rib.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of said first shaped components extends across the width of the main portion of the wall and the ridge thereof is centrally disposed so as to extend lengthwise of said surface.
4. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein flexible damp-proof sheet material is inserted between the course of first shaped components and the course of second shaped components.
5. A method as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the length of said second shaped component is selected to correspond to the length of standard bricks comprising the main portion of the wall.
6. A method of forming a top course arrangement of building components in a wall or similar assembly, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in (a) Figures 1 and 2, or (b) Figure 3 of the drawings.
