Abstract
A terminal assembly comprises a lead terminal (1) and an insert (2) of a material harder than lead which includes a lower portion held fast in the terminal, an internal thread (5) and an upper portion which projects above the terminal and has a plurality of radial slots (3) defining a plurality of segments (4). To the terminal may be joined a connector (6) by means of a bolt (8). The connector has a bore and the bolt has a conical portion, the upper portion of the insert being locatable in the bore of the connector and the bolt being engageable in the thread 5 of the insert to cause the conical portion of the bolt to press the segments of the insert radially outwardly against the wall of the bore of the connector. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Joining of terminals of electric storage cells to connectors
The present invention relates to the joining of terminals of electric storage cells to connectors.
Various means are known for joining connectors to terminals of electric storage batteries, particularly lead storage batteries. End terminals of starter batteries are often joined to strap-type connectors. To effect such joining, commonly the strap-type connector has a conical opening adapted to receive the end terminal of the storage battery, the end terminal also being conically shaped. Threaded pins are often inserted into the terminals of industrial storage batteries, for joining connectors to the terminals. In addition a threaded bolt may be embedded in lead or screwed into a bore in the terminal to assist in joining the connector. When using strap-type connectors the battery terminal can easily be damaged while screwing on the connector. High compressive forces and extra welding operations are necessary when using threaded bolts.
It is also known (e.g. from German Utility
Model 7 441 993) to provide a straddling dowel in a battery end terminal in which a threaded bolt can be screwed and by means of which a connecting cable can be pressed against the end terminal. It is also possible to damage the terminal while screwing in the threaded bolt.
An object of the invention is to enable connectors to be joined to the terminals of storage batteries or cells by means requiring no maintenance and which can be provided without use of special tools or welding equipment.
In accordance with a first aspect of the invention there is provided a terminal assembly for an electric storage cell, comprising a lead terminal and an insert including a lower portion held fast in the terminal, the insert being of material harder than lead, the insert having an internal thread and including an upper portion projecting above the terminal, said upper portion having a plurality of radial slits or slots defining a plurality of segments, the thread being for receiving a bolt having a conical portion for pressing the segments radially outwardly.
In accordance with a second aspect of the present invention there is provided, in combination, a terminal assembly comprising a lead terminal and an insert including a lower portion held fast in the terminal, the insert being of material harder than lead, the insert having an internal thread and including an upper portion projecting obove the terminal, the upper portion having a plurality of radial slits or slots defining a plurality of segments, a connector having a bore and a bolt having a conical portion, the upper portion of the insert being locatable in the bore of the connector and the bolt being engageable in the thread of the insert to cause the conical portion of the bolt to press the segments of the insert radially outwardly against the wall of the bore of the connector.The terminal may be a terminal of one cell of the battery and connected by the connector to a terminal of another cell of the battery or may be an end terminal of the battery.
The invention is further described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view of a terminal assembly according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the terminal assembly of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a section through a terminal assembly according to the invention, the assembly incorporating the terminal of Figs. 1 and 2; and
Figure 4 is a plan view of the terminal assembly of Fig. 3.
The terminal assembly shown in the drawings comprises a lead terminal 1 in which has been cast a hollow insert 2 of material harder than lead, e.g. copper. The lower portion of the insert 2 is held fast in the terminal 1. The upper portion of the insert 2, above the body 1, is provided with slits or slots 3 defining a plurality of segments 4.
The hollow terminal insert 2 has an internal thread 5. To join a flat connector 6, material of high conductivity, e.g. aluminium, is placed over the projecting portion upper of the insert 2 which passes through a bore in the connector, a washer 7 of plastics material or rubber being placed between the terminal and the connector and compensating for any irregularities in the facing surfaces of the terminal and the connector. A conical bolt 8 is then screwed into the thread 5 of the insert 2.
While the bolt is being screwed in, the segments 4 are pressed outwardly by the conical bolt 8 and are thereby pressed against the wall of the bore of the connector 6 so as to produce a satisfactory mechanical and electrical connection between the insert 2 and the connector. The inner surface of the segments 4 projecting above the terminal 1 is conveniently also conically shaped.
The flat connector 6 may be provided with an insulating covering 9 of plastics material applied either as flexible plastics tubing or as a coating. The conical bolt 8 may similarly be provided in its outer region with a covering of insulation 10 in the form of a plastics injection moulding.
It will be appreciated that easily realisable and maintenance-free press-type joint between the terminal insert and the flat connector is produced by the embodiment of the invention described above.
Claims (9)
1. A terminal assembly for an electric storage cell, comprising a lead terminal and an insert including a lower portion held fast in the terminal, the insert being of material harder than lead, the insert having an internal thread including an upper portion projecting above the terminal, said upper portion having a plurality of radial slits or slots defining a plurality of segments, the thread being for receiving a bolt having a conical portion for pressing the segments radially outwardly.
2. An assembly according to Claim 1, wherein the insert is of copper.
3. An assembly according to Claim 1, substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
4. In combination, a terminal assembly comprising a lead terminal and an insert including a lower portion held fast in the terminal, the insert being of material harder than lead, the insert having an internal thread and including as upper portion projecting above the terminal, the upper portion having a plurality of radial slits or slots defining a plurality of segments, a connector having a bore and a bolt having a conical portion, the upper portion of the insert being locatable in the bore of the connector and the bolt being engagable in the thread of the insert to cause the conical portion of the bolt to press the segments of the insert radially outwardly against the wall of the bore of the connector.
5. A combination according to Claim 4, wherein the bolt has a plastics covering at least on its region to be above connector when the connector is joined to the terminal.
6. A combination according to Claim 4 or 5, wherein the connector has a plastics covering.

Claims 4 to 7, wherein the bolt is of copper.
