Abstract
The control unit comprises a water-tight sealed housing (1, 7) accommodating a potentiometer (3) fixed on a printed circuit board (2). The potentiometer is adjustable externally of the housing by means of a pressure- and water-tight adjusting device in the form of a pin (15), sealingly passing between the interior and exterior of the housing. The outer end of the pin (15) has a shaped hole (29) to receive an adjusting key, and the housing cover (7) is then closed by a cap (30). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Electronic control unit
The invention relates to an electronic control unit.
Such units are known having a water-tight sealed housing in which is accommodated a printed circuit board, carrying conductors, control elements and power stages as well as a potentiometer. In a known control unit of this kind, the housing is closed by a cover which is sealed to the housing with lead. A disadvantage of this is that the potentiometer can only be adjusted by damaging the watertight closure of the housing, i.e. the lead seal, and damage to the electronic components also cannot be excluded. Furthermore, when the components have been mounted on the printed circuit board, and once they have been adjusted, it is known to encapsulate them in order, inter alia, to protect them against moisture. However, this precludes any subsequent adjustment which may become necessary.
There is provided by the present invention an electronic control unit having a water-tight sealed housing in which is accommodated a printed circuit board which carries conductors and electronic control elements and power stages as well as a potentiometer, wherein the potentiometer is adjustable by a device which is actuable externally of the housing and which extends into the housing in a sealed manner.
In contrast to the known control unit, the electronic control unit in accordance with the invention has the advantage that the potentiometer can be infinitely readjusted by means of a device which is operable at any time externally of the housing, without risking damage to the sealing of the housing to the cover and to the parts extending out of the housing, thereby obtaining satisfactory reliability of adjustment for the device when using the electronic control unit for rough operation in motor vehicles.
It is particularly advantageous to construct the device from tough-resilient plastics material having a tolerance-compensating portion.
Thus, in the case of large-scale manufacture, it is possible to compensate for unavoidable large tolerances occasioned by manufacture and/or the differing coefficients of expansion of the various materials used for the housing and the printed circuit board.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a fragmentary section through parts of an electronic control unit having a device for adjusting a potentiometer.
A printed circuit board 2 is arranged in the housing 1 of an electronic control unit in a known manner. The printed circuit board 2 is provided with conductors in a known manner.
The printed circuit board 2 carries electronic components which are electrically conductively connected to the associated conductors.
The components include a potentiometer 3 which is received in a spacer 4. The spacer 4 engages on the printed circuit board 2. The connection tags 5 of the potentiometer 3 extend through openings 6 in the printed circuit board 2 and are connected to the associated conductors by soldering.
The housing 1 is sealed in a pressure- and water-tight manner by means of a cover 7. A boss 8 having a bore 9 is formed on the cover 7. The bore 9 has a widened end portion 10.
The bore 9 is provided with a guide portion 11 of smaller diameter towards the interior of the housing. A widened sealing portion 12 is contiguous with the guide portion 11, and an annular recess 13 having a radial stop 14 is contiguous with the sealing portion 12.
A device in the form of a rotary pin 15 for adjustment of the potentiometer 3 extends through the bore 9 from the exterior of the housing 1 into the interior of the housing. The rotary pin 15 is made from, for example, polyamide. The rotary pin has a longitudinally slotted, resilient end portion 16 provided with snecks 1 7. An annular shoulder 18 is contiguous with the end portion 16, and a stop flange 1 9 is contiguous with the annular shoulder 18. The end portion 16 and snecks 17, the annular shoulder 18 and the stop flange 1 9 from the fastening portion of the rotary pin 15.
The fastening portion of the rotary pin 15 is rotatably mounted in the region 11, 12, 13 of the bore in the cover 7. The end portion 16 extends through the guide portion 11, so that the snecks 17 embrace the rim of the guide portion. A sealing ring 20 is fitted into the sealing portion 12 and is seated on the annular shoulder 18 of the rotary pin 15 and is held under pressure in the sealing portion 12 by the stop flange 19 of the rotary pin. The stop flange 19 has a radial projection 21 which, together with the stop 14 in the annular recess 13 in the cover 7, limits the rotary movements of the rotary pin 15. To secure the rotary pin 15 against withdrawal from the guide portion 11 by an axial actuating force, the resilient end portion 16 of the rotary pin 15 incorporates an annular groove 22 in which a clamping ring is fitted. The clamping ring 23 prevents the snecks 17 on the end portion 16 from springing inwardly behind the guide portion 11 and thus prevents the rotary pin 15 from slipping out of the cover 7.
A tolerance-compensating portion 24 is contiguous with the fastening portion of the rotary pin 15 and is provided with two universal joints 25 and 26. A flat-plug-like end portion of the rotary pin 15 extends as an adjusting portion 27 into a slot in the centre tapping 28 of the potentiometer 3.
A A shaped hole 29 is formed in the base of the resilient end portion 16 of the rotary pin 15 for rigid engagement of an adjusting key which is of known construction and is not further illustrated.
After the potentiometer 3 has been adjusted, the bore 9 is closed by a cap 30 which is inserted into the widened end portion 10.
