Description
SPECIFICATION
Safety belts
The invention relates to safety belts.
The invention provides a safety belt and means for
mounting the belt on a motor-cycle such that the belt
can be used buy a rider of the motor-cycle to restrain
the rider from being flung off the motor-cycle, for
example over the handlebars, in the event of an
accident.
The means to mount the belt on a motor-cycle
may comprise a pair of support members attachable
one at each side of the seat of the motor-cycle, and
means to attach the belt to the support members.
The belt may be arranged in combination with a
second beltforthe use of a pillion passenger, there
being means to fasten the second belt to the first
mentioned belt or directly to the motor-cycle.
The or each belt may comprise a waist belt having
a quick release buckle. The belt may be of webbing
and it may be provided with a pair of clips, one for
attachment to each support member.
Alternatively, the means to mount the belt on a
motor-cycle may comprise a support frame arranged
for connection to the seat or to a rear part of the
motor-cycle.
The belt may comprise a pair of curved arms
pivotally mounted for movement between an open position, and a closed position in which they
embrace the waist of a rider of the motor-cycle.
The free end of one arm may have a plurality of
key-hole shaped slots therein, the free end of the
other arm having a stud thereon having an enlarged
head, the belt being fastened by engaging the stud in
one of the slots.
The arms may be made of plastics coated steel
strip, the upper and lower edges of the strip being
curled over to make the belt more comfortable to
wear.
The invention includes a motor-cycle fitted with a
safety belt according to the invention.
By way of example, specific embodiments of the
invention will now be described, with reference to
the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a motor-cycle fitted with a
first embodiment of safety belt according to the
invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the belt shown in Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of an alternative
embodiment of safety belt according to the inven
tion.
The safety belt forming the subject of the first
embodiment comprises a webbing belt 10 and a pair
of support members (only one of which can be seen
in Figure 1 at 11) for use in mounting the belt on a
motor-cycle 12.
As best shown in Figure 2, the belt 10 comprises a
length of canvas webbing having a quick release
buckle 13 and a pair of metal clips 14, somewhat similar two an army belt.
Each support member 11 comprises a rigid metal strap extending upwardly from the hub 15 of the motor-cycle and secured to the motor-cycle frame at 16. The upper end of each support member 11 has a releasable catch 17 which is connectable to one of the clips 14.
Once the belt has been secured in position as shown in Figure 1, a rider of the motor-cycle can fasten the belt around theirwastto hold them securely on the motor-cycle even in the event of an accident. The use of the belt reduces the risk that the rider of the motor-cycle may be flung off the motorcycle, for example over the handlebars, and this will reduce the likelihood that the rider of the motorcycle may suffer a broken neck or head injuries in the event of an accident.
A second belt may be provided for the use of a pillion passenger. The second belt may be provided with clips similar to the clips 14 and these may be arranged to fasten on to additional clips provided on the belt 10, or on to a further set of support member 11.
The alternative embodiment of belt shown in Figu re 3 comprises a pair of semi-oval arms 103, 104 hinged at 101, 102 to aframe 100. In use the frame 100 is attached to part of a motor-cycle, for example to the part 18 shown in Figure 1, orto support members connected to the seat.
The free end of arm 103 has a plurality of key-hole slots 107 therein and the free end of arm 104 comprises a tongue 105 having a stud 106 thereon, with an enlarged head.
Each arm is made from substantially rigid plastics coated steel strip, the upper and lower edges being curled over as shown for comfort.
To fasten the belt the stud 106 is engaged in one of the slots 107.
The invention is not restricted to the details of the foregoing embodiments. For instance the support members 11 may extend in a more vertical direction from the hub 15, so that the catches 17 are positioned nearer to the rear of the motor-cycle, or the support members 11 may be adjustable from the position shown to such a more vertical position, so that when a pillion passenger is being carried, the
belt worn by the pillion passenger may be connected to support members 11, and the belt worn by the driver of the motor-cycle may be connected to the belt worn by the pillion passenger.
There may be different numbers of studs 106 and holes 107. For example, to provide a strongerfasten- ing, there may be a plurality of studs each of which engage in an associated hole 107.
