Abstract
Apparatus for safeguarding and exercising animals comprises a first elongate member which is flexible and relatively inextensible (e.g. rope or chain) secured at its ends to supports such as anchor posts and mounted on the first elongate member is a movable device or pulley which is capable of free movement therealong. A second elongate member, also flexible and inextensible is secured at one end to the movable device, preferably via a swivel connection, and at the other end can be secured to the animal which is to be safeguarded and exercised. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Animal safeguarding and exercising device
This invention relates to apparatus for safeguarding and exercising animals such as dogs.
Known devices of this type are relatively complex and non-portable, as for example a cage-like dog run. Additionally such devices are cumbersome and unsightly.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved form of apparatus for safeguarding and exercising animals.
According to the present invention there is provided apparatus for safeguarding and exercising animals comprising a first elongate member capable of being secured at each end to supports, movable means mounted on the first elongate member intermediate the ends thereof and capable of free movement therealong, and a second elongate member secured at one end to said movable means capable of being secured at its other end to an animal.
Conveniently the first and second elongate members are made of rope, for example jute, polypropylene, nylon or wire or a combination thereof and are flexible and relatively inextensible.
Alternatively the first and second members may incorporate extension means such as a springloaded or self-returning drum device such that the extent of extension is limited within the breaking strain of the members. The first and second members could alternatively include or be made of chain.
Preferably the components of the apparatus are made of weather proof materials or include weatherproof cladding.
The movable means may conveniently be in the form of a pulley the housing of which is secured either directly or via a swivel connection to the second elongate member by welding, rivetting, binding, splicing or the like. The pulley may be made of glass-reinforced plastics or carbon-fibre reinforced plastics depending upon the breaking strength and degree of weatherproofing desired.
The free end of the second elongate member may include a snap-shut eyelet (sometimes known as a 'thimble') for affixing to a dog's collar or it may be permanently fixed to a dog-collar. Alternatively, the free end of the second member may be free from fittings so that it can be tied to an animal in any desired manner.
The first elongate member which preferably is an 8 plaid rope, prestretched, with a 600 kg breaking strain and conspicuous in colour, e.g. bright yellow, may have fittings at its ends to simplifiy secural thereof to existing supports. Such fittings may take the form of snap-shut eyelets secured to the ends of the elongate member by means of welding, rivetting, binding, splicing or the like or snap-shut friction grip devices such as are sold under the trade name
CLAMCLEAT so that the end portions of the first elongate member may be wound around suitable supports one or more times and the eyelets or
CLAMCLEATS hooked around the portion of the first elongate member spanning the space between the supports. Alternatively, the ends of the first elongate member may be free of fittings so that they may be secured to the supports in any desired manner.
Conveniently, the apparatus includes an anchor post to which one end of the first elongate member is secured in the manner described, this anchor post acting as one of the aforesaid supports the other of which may be an existing structure such as a fence post, gate post, or a tree. In an alternative form two anchor posts are provided respectively secured to the ends of the first elongate member, whereby the apparatus is completely portable. The anchor posts referred to may be made of timber or metal but conveniently terminate at their lower ends in a pointed arrangement so that they can be driven into the ground relatively easily.A short distance above the pointed end each anchor post preferably includes a plurality of laterally-extending stabiliser members such as metal or wooden arms extending at an angle of say 30 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the post, the arrangement being such that when the post is fully driven into the ground these stabiliser arms firmly engage the ground to anchor the post firmly in position.
The first elongate member may be secured to the anchor post or posts at any convenient distance above ground level and for this purpose each post is provided with a plurality of fixing locations for the pertaining end of the elongate member or with a single position-adjustable fixing which is capable of being firmly secured at any desired position along the length of the post. The anchor post may be formed by two telescopic components.
In the case where the apparatus does not include anchor posts but the first elongate member is intended to be secured to existing supports it is desirable that the ends of the first member be maintained at the initially selected height throughout use of the apparatus. This may be achieved by means of
U-shaped nails or staples clamping the first elongate member to these supports when the latter are made of timber. Similarly shaped masonry bolts may be used where the support is made of masonry.
The apparatus of the present invention is useful in safeguarding and exercising animals such as domestic pets, e.g. dogs, cats and other animals such as horses, goats, sheep and the like insofar as the first elongate member is affixed to two supports at a height suited to the animal concerned and the second elongate member is secured at its free end to the animal by means of a collar or halter or other device. This allows the animal to be self exercised within limitations and safeguards the animal in that it can only stray from the location of the first elongate member by an amount dictated by the length of the second elongate member. The first elongate member may incorporate plastic baubles along its length in order to limit movement ofthe movable means if th is is thought necessary. Where the mov

able means includes a swivel connection to the second elongate member it will be appreciated that the animal can be self exercised without twisting of either of the elongate members.
The apparatus may also be used to train young animals.
Also, the second elongate member may be extensible or length adjustable to allowforthe height and growth of the animal.
The accompanying sketches illustrate the apparatus.
