Abstract

A telecommunication cable comprising a plurality of twisted together video pairs 23 in which the twisted pairs are laid helically around a central core 21 of semiconducting material, for example semiconducting plastics material. Additionally an audio pair 24 may be associated with a video pair, each audio conductor lying in a respective one of the two grooves joined by the juxtaposition of the components of the video pairs. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to telecommunication cables This invention relates to telecommunication cables and in particular to cables of the kind comprising a plurality of twisted together video pairs.
By the expression "video pair" is meant a pair of separately insulated conductors suitable for use at a frequency lying within the range 1 to 10 megahertz.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a telecommunication cable which has improved cross-view characteristics between opposite video pairs within the cable.
In accordance with the invention, a telecommunication cable comprises a plurality of twisted together video pairs wherein the twisted pairs are laid helically around a central core of semiconducting material, preferably semiconducting plastics material.
The invention is especially, but not exclusively, applicable to the telecommunication cable described and claimed in the Complete Specification of our UK Patent No. 1105930 and comprising a plurality of audio pairs and a plurality of video pairs, each audio pair being associated with a video pair to form a "pod", the audio pair of each "pod" having the same length of pair twist as that of the video pair which which it is associated and having one of its conductors lying in one of the two interstitial grooves formed by the conductors of the video pair and the other of its conductors lying in the other of the two grooves.
This invention is also applicable to the telecommunication cable in which at least one video pair does not have an audio pair associated with it but has one or each of its interstitial spaces present within the circumscribing cylinder of the pair occupied by an elongate member wholly of electrically insulating material, which elongate members serve to prevent displacement of one pair with respect to an adjacent pair.
As described and claimed in the Complete Specification of our UK Patent No. 1322752, each elongate member of insulating material occupying an interstitial space of a video pair may be integral with or secured to one of the insulated conductors of the pair with which the member is associated or may be integral with or secured to the elongate member, when present, occupying the other interstitial space of the pair.
The expression "audio pair" is intended to mean a pair of separately insulated conductors which is not suitable for use as a video pair as hereinbefore defined but which is normally suitable only for use at a frequency within the audio frequency range.
The central core of the cable is preferably either of solid cross-section or of tubular cross-section. Preferably a screening layer is provided around the twisted pairs, the screening layer preferably being of semiconducting polythene, or of copper tape, or of polythene coated aluminium tape.
Preferably the conductors of the pairs are of copper.
The invention is further illustrated by a description, by way of example, of two forms of telecommunication cables with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of one form of telecommunication cable; and Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of an alternative form of telecommunication cable.
The telecommunication cable shown in Fig.
1 comprises six sets of mixed pairs or "pods" 2, laid up helically around a central tube 1 of semiconducting polythene, each set comprising one video pair and one audio pair. Each core 3 of each video pair comprises a copper conductor 4 and a polythene insulating covering 5. Each core 6 of each audio pair comprises a copper conductor 7 and a covering 8 of polythene insulation. The four cores of each "pod" are laid up together with a right hand lay, one audio core 6 lying in one of the two interstitial grooves betwen the video cores 3 and the other audio core lying in the other interstitial groove. The length of lay of the cores of each "pod" is different from that of the cores of each of the remaining five "pods". The six "pods" 2 are laid up around the semiconducting polythene central tube 1 and the assembly is lapped with tape 9 of polyester film and is provided with a seamless covering 10 of polythene. The polythene covered assembly of mixed pairs is provided with a screen of longitudinally applied polythene coated aluminium tape 11 and is enclosed in a seamless sheath 1 2 of a black polythene.
The telecommunication cable shown in Fig.
2 comprises a central core 21 of solid semiconducting polythene around which are laid up helically four sets of "pods" 22, each set comprising one video pair 23 and one audio pair 24, and two video pairs 25 without associated audio pairs. The assembly is lapped with a tape 26 of polyester film and is provided with a seamless covering 27 of polythene. The polythene covered assembly of each cable has a screen 28 comprising a helically lapped copper tape and is enclosed in a seamless sheath 29 of polythene. The interstitial spaces of each video pair 25 of insulated conductors are occupied by solid elongate polythene members 30, one member being integral with the insulation of one insulated conductor of the pair 25, and the other member being integral with the other insulated conductor of the pair 25.
