Abstract

A cylinder lock has a cylinder 12 rotatable by a key 14 relative to the lock casing 11. A coupling strip 31 is rotated by the cylinder 12 to rotate a latching device (not illustrated). The strip 31 has an axially extending portion 32 passing through an aperture 26 in the rear end portion (23) of the cylinder 12 and a radially extending portion 33 lying between the end portion of the cylinder and the main portion. The rear end portion (23) is attached to the main portion of the cylinder 12 by an axially extending joining portion (22) which engages the radially extending portion 33 of the strip 31 to cause rotation of the cylinder 12 to be transmitted to the strip 31. The portions 22 and 23 may be formed by an L-shaped locking member 21 separate from but attached to the main portion of the cylinder 12 for rotation therewith. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Cylinder lock This invention relates to cylinder locks. Such locks comprise a casing, a cylinder rotatable within the casing under the control of a key and a lever extending axially from the rear end of the cylinder for moving a locking member on rotation of the cylinder. The lever is attached to the cylinder by means of a spring clip, and it is usual to allow limited movement of the lever at right angles to the axis of the cylinder in case the cylinder casing and the locking member assembly are not properly aligned. In one known form of cylinder lock, the rear end of the cylinder is formed with a diametral slot and the end of the lever fitting into the slot is T-shaped. A spring clip closes the mouth of the slot and is formed with an aperture through which the stem of the lever extends. The head of the lever is retained within the slot by the spring clip which has opposed arms fitting into facing grooves along the sides of the slot.
The present invention provides a cylinder lock including a casing, a cylinder rotatable within the casing under the control of a key and a lever extending from the rear end of the cylinder for rotation with the cylinder, but the lever is not attached directly to the cylinder, but indirectly by means of an L-shaped locking arm secured to and rotatable with the cylinder having a portion extending at right angles to the axis of the cylinder spaced from the end of the cylinder, the lever having a main portion extending axially of the cylinder and an end portion extending at right angle to the axis of the cylinder between said portion of the locking arm and the end of the cylinder. The main portion of the lever extends through an aperture in said portion of the locking arm. This aperture may be circular of a diameter at least as great as the width of the lever or it may be rectangular with dimensions a little greater than the cross-section of the lever. In the first case the aperture does not prevent rotation of the lever, and rotation is limited by engagement of the radially extending portion of the lever with the axially extending portion of the locking arm. In the second case, the lever and the locking arm are constrained to rotate axially of the cylinder together.
An example of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a central section through a cylinder lock according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan of the lock of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a central section through the locking arm of the lock of Fig. 1 on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the locking arm of Fig. 3.
Fig. 1 illustrates a five-lever cylinder lock having a casing 11 and a cylinder 12. The cylinder 12 is formed with a key hole 1 3 at its front end into which a key 1 4 can be inserted, and when the correct key is inserted the cylinder 12 can be rotated relative to the casing 11.
At the rear end of the cylinder 12 a segmentshaped portion is cut away, and in the cut-away portion lies an axially extending portion 22 of an Lshaped locking member 21. The portion 22 of the arm 21 fits closely into the cut-away portion of the cylinder 12, so that the arm 21 is constrained to rotate within the casing 11 with the cylinder 1 2.
As can be seen in Fig. 3, the axial portion 22 of the arm 21 is formed with a groove 24 on its curved side, and the arm 21 is secured axially relative to the cylinder 12 by a spring clip 25 fitting in a groove around the cylinder 12 and the groove 24.
The arni 21 also has a radially extending portion 23 which is spaced from the rear end of the cylinder 12 and is provided with a central circular aperture 26. A lever 31 has an axially extending portion 32 whose width is slightly less than the diameter of the aperture 26 and a radially extending portion 33 located between the portion 23 and the rear end of the cylinder 12. For added security, a washer, not shown, is placed between the portion 23 and the portion 33 with a central aperture closely fitting the cross-section of the portion 32 to prevent the lever 31 being withdrawn through the aperture 26. The lever 31 is used in conventional manner to operate a latching device on rotation of the cylinder 12 by the key 14.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, it will be seen that a small recess 41 is formed on the face of the portion 23 facing the rear of the cylinder 1 2 around the aperture 26, and a segmental shaped groove 42 is formed along the centre of the flat face of the portion 22. The groove 24 has a central rectangular recess 43, for example to receive the inturned ends of clip 25. The locking arm 21 is preferably made of zinc alloy.
The latching device (not shown) has a rectangular aperture engaged by the lever 31, the latch being moved on rotation of the lever 31 about its longitudinal axis. As the lever 31 has a certain degree of play in the aperture 26 of the arm 21, the latching device and the cylinder lock do not have to be accurately aligned.
It is possible for a single lever 31 or two such levers to extend on both sides of the latching device through its rectangular aperture, so that the device can be moved by a cylinder lock or other form of handle on either side. When two separate levers are used, the length of the levers can accommodate the locks being mounted in doors of different thicknesses, since the levers can slide longitudinally relative to each other and to the latching device.
