Abstract
A toy for producing film cartoons comprises a set of printed illustrations A equivalent to successive frames of a moving picture, a strip B of blank transparent film onto which the illustrations can be traced, and a projector C for projecting the film by back projection. The user of the toy can therefore produce films by tracing illustrations onto the film and then passing the film through the projector. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A toy for producing a film cartoon
This invention relates to a toy for producing a film cartoon.
According to the invention, there is provided a toy comprising a set of printed illustrations, a strip of transparent film onto which the illustrations can be traced, and a projector, the strip of film being adapted to be fed through the projector so that the illustrntions traced onto the film can be projected in turn onto a screen to display a moving picture.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a book with a set of printed illustrations;
Figure 2 illustrates the step of tracing illustrations onto a roll of blank film;
Figure 3 shows the resulting film being passed through a projector;
Figure 4 is a cross-section through a suitable projector; and
Figure 5 is a horizontal cross-section through the projector of Figure 4.
The book A shown in Figure 1 is printed with a series of numbered illustrations depicting sequential stages in a particular movement. In the example illustrated, an apple is shown falling off a tree and in the various illustrations the apple is shown at successively lower positions. This relationship between the sequential illustrations is necessary to produce a genuine moving picture.
A roll of transparent film B is provided as part of the toy. The film will normally have sprocket holes along its edges, and may be provided with outline frames so that the pictures are eventually located in the correct positions on the film. The transparent film is laid over the illustrations in the book, and the illustrations are traced onto the film using either a black-and-white or a colour pen. Once a full sequence of pictures has been traced onto a length of film, the film can be inserted in a projector C as shown in Figure 3 and displayed on a screen.
The projector is shown in more detail in Figures 4 and 5. Looking first at Figure 4, it will be seen that there is a housing 1 containing a lamp 2 powered by batteries 3. A motor4 also powered by the batteries 3 serves to drive the film 5. The image on the film 5 is projected onto a back-projection screen 6. An
ON/OFF switch 7 which can switch the lamp on independently of the motor and which also effects a speed control is provided at the top of the housing 1.
The methanism for driving the film is shown in
Figure 5. Agearwheel 8 is mounted on the output shaft of the motor 4. The wheel 5 meshes with the outer rim of another gear wheel 9 which has an inner toothed rim 10 meshing with a pin wheel 11 of a stepping mechanism. The pin 12 ofthe pin wheel 11 cooperates with a stepping wheel 13 with six slots which is driven in steps to turn a sprocket wheel 14 which engages with the sprocket holes 15 at the edges of the film.
1. A toy comprising a set of printed illustrations, a strip of transparent film onto which the illustrations can be traced, and a projector, the strip of film being adapted to be fed through the projector so that the illustrations traced onto the film can be projected in turn onto a screen to display a moving picture.
2. A toy for producing a cartoon substantially as herein described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
3. A projector for use with a toy as claimed in claim 1,the projector including a battery-driven motor for driving the film, a gear train including a
Geneva Cross mechanism where the slotted wheel has six slots, a light source and a back-projection screen.
4. A projector substantially as herein described with reference to and as shown in Figures 4 and 5 of the accompanying drawings.
