Abstract

Puzzle pieces 4 are assembled in the recesses 3 of a support 1. Questions 7 and answers 8 are provided on the reverse side of each piece 4 and in the bottom of each recess 3 so that the pieces 4 can be identified with their corresponding recesses 3. Instead of questions and answers, matching colours, word or shapes may be used. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Jigsaw puzzle This invention relates to jigsaw puzzles.
Jigsaw puzzles are well-known and conventionally comprise pieces each having part of a picture or other image thereon, which pieces can be assembled together to form a complete picture or image.
The present invention has as its object to provide a jigsaw puzzle which has the same interest as a conventional jigsaw puzzle and which can also serve as an aid to learning.
The present invention provides a jigsaw puzzle comprising a plurality of pieces adapted to be assembled together in a particular order and a support for said pieces having areas defined thereon corresponding to said pieces, the pieces and their corresponding areas having indicator means thereon peculiarthereto which enable each piece to be identified with its corresponding area.
Each said piece may have part of a picture or other image on one side thereof and said indicator means on the reverse side thereof.
Said support may comprise means for locating said pieces on the support. Such locating means may take any convenient form but preferably define said areas. For example, said locating means may comprise ribs and such ribs may define recesses for the reception of said pieces, the depth of each recess being substantially equal to the thickness of its corresponding piece and each rib having part of said picture or other image thereon, whereby when all of the pieces have been inserted in their corresponding recesses the ribs and the pieces will combine to form a complete picture or other image. The indicator means may be provided in the bottom of each recess.According to one embodiment the ribs are arranged in a rectangular grid pattern and said pieces are each rectangular in shape, although it will be understood that the ribs may be arranged in any suitable pattern and may define areas of any suitable shape.
Said indicator means may comprise questions and answers, e.g., relating to arithmetic, general knowledge, famous persons or events, sport, or other subjects. Alternatively the indicator means may comprise indicia on said pieces which can be matched with corresponding indicia on said areas. Said indicia may, for example, comprise letters, words, numbers, pictures, colours and/or shapes. Thus, for very young children the indicia could comprise simply colours and/or simple geometric shapes on the reverse sides of the pieces and matching colours and/or simple geometric shapes on said areas. For children learning to read, each piece could have a word thereon describing an objectorthing and its corresponding area could have thereon a picture or representation of that object or thing, e.g., a piece could have the word CAT thereon and its corresponding area could show a picture of a cat.
Although not necessary, interest can be added by relating the picture or other image revealed by the assembled puzzle to the indicator means. For example, where the indicator means comprise questions and answers relating to a famous person or event then the picture formed by the assembled puzzle may relate to such person or event.
The invention will be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. lisa plan view of one embodiment of a jigsaw puzzle according to the present invention, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the reverse side of one of the pieces of the puzzle shown in Fig. land Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The jigsaw puzzle illustrated comprises a support 1 having ribs 2 thereon which are arranged in a rectangular grid pattern as shown and which define rectangular recesses 3 adapted to receive and locate rectangular pieces 4. The recesses 3 are of substantially the same depth as the thickness of the pieces 4.
The ribs 2 and the pieces 4 each have on the upper surface thereof a portion of a picture or other image 5 so that when all of the pieces 4 have been inserted into their corresponding recesses 3 the ribs 2 and pieces 4 will combine to form the complete picture or other image 5.
Each of the pieces 4 has printed on the reverse side thereof an indicator means peculiarthereto and its corresponding recess 3 has printed in the bottom thereof a corresponding indicator means, thus enabling each piece 4 to be identified with its corresponding recess 3. In the illustrated embodiment the indicator menas comprise a mathematical summation 7 on each piece 4 and an answer 8 to such summation in its corresponding recess 3. It will be understood, however, that the indicating means may take any other suitable form as previously described herein.
The support 1 and the pieces 4 are preferably made from cardboard, although it will be understood that either or both could be made from any other suitable material such as wood or plastics material.
1. Ajigsaw puzzle comprising a plurality of pieces adapted to be assembled together in a par ticularorderand a support for said pieces having areas defined thereon corresponding to said pieces, the pieces and their corresponding areas having indicator means thereon peculiar thereto which enable each piece to be identified with its corresponding area.
2. A jigsaw puzzle according to claim 1, wherein each piece has part of a picture or other image on one side thereof and said indicator means on the reverse side thereof.
3. A jigsaw puzzle according to claim 1 or 2, wherein said support comprises means for locating said pieces on the support.
4. A jigsaw puzzle according to claim 3, wherein said locating means define said areas.
5. A jigsaw puzzle according to claim 4, wherein said locating means comprise ribs.
6. A jigsaw puzzle according to claim 5, insofar as this is dependant upon claim 2, wherein said ribs define recesses for the reception of said pieces, the depth of each recess being substantially equal to the thickness of its corresponding piece and each rib
