Abstract

A board for displaying numerical information, e.g. sporting league tables, in a number of discrete rows is made up from a number of interfitting units 2, 3 each of which has a series of windows 6 along it and at least one rotatable wheel arranged behind each window carrying the various items of information to be displayed on its periphery. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements Relating to Information Display Boards This invention relates to information display boards, more particularly, but not exclusively, for displaying numerical tables such as sporting league tables.
According to the invention an information display board arranged to present information in a number of discrete rows is made up from a number of interfitting units each of which has variable information carrying means for a respective row. Thus in the case of a sporting league table where the information is displayed in a series of horizontal rows and vertical rows (hereafter referred to for convenience as "columns"), each of said units may provide the information for a respective column.
Consequently the size of the board can be increased or decreased to provide exactly the required number of columns.
Advantageously the units interfit through dovetail connections between adjacent side faces of the units.
One construction of display board in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows an exploded perspective view of the board, Figure 2 shows a perspective view of one unit of the board, and Figure 3 shows a cut-away perspective view of the unit.
For convenience the display board will be described as a football-league display board but it will be appreciated that it has many applications in other fields where a variable display of tabulated numerical information is required.
As seen in Figure 1 , the display board a teamname carrying unit 1, an intermediate column unit 2 and an end column unit 3. Only one intermediate column unit has been shown, but the number of these will be selected so that with the end unit they will provide the required number of columns of numerical information.
The team-name carrying unit 1 has a plurality of shallow elongated recesses 4 extending from the left-hand edge of the unit 1 for receiving team-name cards. The elongated recesses 4 extend parallel to each other and are disposed as a series down the length of the unit 1 corresponding to the number of teams in the league. The sides of each recess are undercut so that when a team card is slid into the recess from the left hand edge of the unit 1 it is prevented from falling out of the mouth of the recess. Above the recesses 4 is a wider but otherwise similar recess 5 for receiving a title card e.g. giving the name of the league competition.
Each of the column units 2 and 3 has a series of information display windows 6 disposed along it corresponding in number to the number of recesses 4 so that when the units 1, 2 and 3 are fitted together a row of windows 6 one from each of the units 2 and 3, aligns in a horizontal row with one of the recesses 4. Behind each of the windows 6 is disposed variable numerical display means as will be described. Extending from the upper edge of each of the column units 2 and 3 is a shallow recess 7 shorter than but otherwise similar to the recesses 4 for receiving a column designation card, e.g. "matches played", "won", etc.
The units 1, 2 and 3 are interfitted at their adjacent side edges through dovetail connections.
Thus as seen in Figure 1, the team name unit 1 has three male dovetails 8 which are received in three complementary female dovetails 9 on the left hand side face of the adjacent column unit 2 by sliding the left hand side face of the unit 2 down over the right hand side face of the unit 1.
The intermediate column units 2 are similarly interfitted through male dovetails 8 on their left hand sides and female dovetails 9 on their righthand sides. The end column unit is provided with female dovetails 9 on its left-hand side but with a plain side face on its right-hand side to provide a clean side face along the right hand edge of the display board. The female dovetails 9, as shown in Figure 2 have blind upper ends below so that the dovetail interfitting does not show in the display face of the board.
The numerical display means behind each of the windows comprise index wheels 10 carrying the numerals "0" to "9" around their peripheries.
In Figure 3 two index wheels 10 are shown behind each window so that the maximum number which can be displayed is "99". If desired one index wheel to display the maximum number "9" or three index wheels to display the maximum number "999" may be disposed behind each window. The index wheels 10 have raised milled edges 11 for each of setting them for example by a stylus. The index wheels 10 are disposed behind the windows such that the milled edges lie below the windows 6 to avoid them being moved accidentally.
To house the index wheels the column units 2 and 3 are of inverted channel form closed at their ends. The index wheels associated with each window are mounted for independent rotation on a common shaft 12 which at its ends is supported in side strips 13 and 14. For this purpose each of the side strips 13 and 14 is provided with a series of holes for receiving the shafts 12. The side strips 13 and 14 extend along opposite sides of the channel of the column units 2 and 3 and locate against the bottom of the channel. The width of the side strips 13 and 14 is less than the depth of the channel so that their lower edges as seen in Figure 3 provide abutment shoulders below the mouth of the channel for a channel closure strip 1 5. The closure strip 1 5 is fixed in position for example by gluing it to the strips 13 and 14 and at its ends to the closed ends of the channel.
Advantageously all parts of the display board except possibly the index wheels can be of moulded plastics material.
