Abstract

A bearing and lubrication layer on a contact surface, such as a guide track, sliding pin and sliding bearing, of sliding contact means is disclosed, the layer comprising molybdenum disulphide or a mixture of molybdenum, sulphur, molybdenum disulphide and other compounds of molybdenum and sulphur in solid form.

Description

SPECIFICATION Sliding contact means with bearing and lubrication layer The present invention relates to a bearing and lubrication layer on a sliding contact surface, such as a guide track, sliding pin and sliding bearing of sliding contact means.
It is generally known in technology to apply liquid or pasty emergency lubricants, for example molybdenum disulphide, in addition to the application of lubricants on sliding surfaces for the attainment of emergency running properties. It is, however, disadvantageous that a further lubricant must be used in spite of the application of an emergency running lubricant and the period of adhesion of the emergency running lubricant is not unlimited.
There is therefore a need for provision of sliding surfaces with a medium in solid state which has both bearing and lubricating properties.
According to the present invention there is provided sliding contact means comprising a surface for sliding contact with other contact means, the surface being provided with a bearing and lubrication layer comprising solid molybdenum disulphide or a solid mixture of molybdenum, sulphur, molybdenum disulphide and at least one other compound of molybdenum or sulphur.
Preferably, the bearing and lubrication layer is formed as a superthin layer, preferably with a layer thickness of less than 25 microns.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example only.
A number of sliding surfaces are used in machine construction, especially guide tracks in machine tool construction and bearing pins or spigots and sliding bearings in other branches of machine construction.
These surfaces are produced of material which have good bearing properties, i.e. running and carrying properties. The surfaces are loaded with lubricants in order to ensure their function as sliding surfaces. Additionally, a loading with liquid or pasty emergency running lubricants is provided in order to ensure running properties over a short space of time, even in the event of a reduction in or failure of the loading with lubricants.
According to the embodiment, such a sliding surface is provided with a bearing and lubrication layer consisting of molybdenum disulphide, or a mixture of molybdenum, sulphur, molybdenum disulphide and other compounds of molybdenum and sulphur, in solid form. The applied layer, which is especially a superthin layer of less than 25 microns, has running and carrying properties as well as lubricating properties over a longer space of time, so that additional lubrication of the sliding surfaces is obviated.
1. Sliding contact means comprising a surface for sliding contact with other contact means, the surface being provided with a bearing and lubrication layer comprising solid molybdenum disulphide or a solid mixture of molybdenum, sulphur, molybdenum disulphide and at least one other compound of molybdenum or sulphur.
2. Sliding contact means as claimed in claim 1, wherein the layer is superthin.
3. Sliding contact means as claimed in claim 2, wherein the thickness of the layer is less than 25 microns.
4. Sliding contact means as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the surface is provided on one of a guide track, sliding pin and sliding bearing.
5. Sliding contact means substantially as hereinbefore described.
